The price is STILL inexcusable... :p

So how does the refurbished display idea work? Do they replace the backlight or do you get stuck with the possibility of having a three-year-old backlight in there?

Potentially.

I don't see what the problem would be, however. Maybe a greater failure rate, but at the same time one would think that they were under warentee.

Considering $499 is how much I bought mine new 2 or so years ago when CompUSA was closing - that's just a ridiculous price. Apple doesn't look like it actually wants to sell it - may be since if they did, they would potentially end up giving the buyer the 24" one as replacement if the thing fails.

These sell like hot cakes. At least based on my observations. Apple knows this. :p

Yeah, possible. Looks like lot of people ran away from the new one (and sadly there aren't many good IPS panels easily available at that price. )

I don't think that's too bad, maybe. I bought my 2005FPW 20" Dell for $350 or so when it was the current model, so, add in the Apple Price and that's ... not bad. Still pricey. But S-IPS panels seem to be harder to find anymore, TN is taking over. :/ I know they're still out there, but even 'higher quality' monitors from brands seem to be TN still. Maybe that's always been the case, i don't know. I'm just rambling.

Hm, the link is dead for me. How much is it? It's not the new LED one is it?

Its not really changed that much. There are just a lot more TN panel displays around now. You can still get IPS based displays in a range of sizes with varying features, quality and price. Apple, Dell, Doublesight/Hazro, HP, NEC, LG and Planar are all selling IPS displays. Do there really need to be more companies? Its a niche market after all. There are also very high quality S-PVA panels out there like Samsung XLs and many of Eizo's offerings and many of the $400-$600 S-PVA displays are perfectly fine for most users who want better than TN.

$500 for a 20" ACD? The only reason I'd lay the cash down now is because I want things to match. I have a 20" bought off here for cheap and a 30" bought from Apple years ago when it didn't seem all that bad to pay that much for a good panel. Today I cannot fathom paying that or recommending the ACD's (non-led).

That's insane. I have two 22" Dell monitors and I'm looking to get rid of them for two 23" cinema display only because I want them to match my Mac Pro. Plus, they are slightly bigger ;). But seriously, I've been monitoring eBay and I can buy two 23" cinema displays for about $500 each. :)

What ebay listings are you looking at?
One 23" ACD goes for about $500 average... the ones that are selling for like $100-$200 per one, are defective, scratched, or cracked.

Oh I misread it.

I wouldn't worry about it; I think it was just a verbal error we all make on Chad H's part. The only reason I know is that I've been on eBay looking at monitors for some time; otherwise I'd read it just like you did.

The value of up to three years of Applecare makes the 20" ACD worth it.

They are great monitors. The 23" is probably the best value for the money though, if you can still get it.

Yes, sorry. I went back and changed it. $500 for two 23" cinema displays would be a great deal wouldn't it! ;)
