heres what the blog sayd before they took it down
The latest version of Yahoo! Messenger for iPhone (v1.2) is now available. Here’s what’s in store for you:
New message alerts
(push notifications)
We’ve taken advantage of Apple’s 3.0 push notifications platform to enable new message notifications. Now, you will be notified when a new IM comes to your iPhone, even if the Yahoo! Messenger app is closed (or your phone is asleep).
The new message alerts for Yahoo! Messenger for iPhone work like the push notifications you get for Mail. When a new message comes in, a badge appears on top of the Yahoo! Messenger app icon on your home screen, indicating the number of new messages. This badge is based on cumulative messages received so whether three friends send you one message or one friend sends you three messages, you’d see a “3” on the app icon either way.
We’ll also pop up an alert on your home screen when a new message comes in. This is similar to when you receive an SMS text message on your phone. A notification overlays your home screen and you can decide whether to view the new IM or just close the alert. Even if your phone is asleep, we’ll wake it up and display the alert message.
You can also be notified with a sound when a new IM comes in. If your iPhone is muted, it will vibrate instead.
You can choose to use all or none of these new message alerts. To set your preferences, tap “Settings” on the home screen, then “Notifications”, and finally “Yahoo! Messenger”. From there you can turn on/off the sound, alert or badge notifications (they’re defaulted on when you install the app).
Now that new message alerts are included, you may want to make sure your Yahoo! Messenger for iPhone app icon is visible on your primary home screen. Get tips from Apple on how to customize your home screen icons. Using the same method, you can also drag and drop the Yahoo! Messenger app icon into your dock.
Stay online for up to 2 weeks
The Yahoo! Messenger for iPhone app will keep you signed in and visible to your Yahoo! Messenger friends for up to two weeks. When the app is closed on your phone, your status will show you as online but in an Idle state. Friends can IM you and when they do, you’ll receive a new message notification as described above.
There are a couple of ways your Yahoo! Messenger for iPhone availability can be interrupted. The first is if you sign into Yahoo! Messenger on a different device, such as your computer. Currently you can only be signed into Yahoo! Messenger from one location, so if you tend to move back and forth between your computer and your iPhone, just remember to sign in to your Yahoo! Messenger for iPhone app to ensure you’re online.
The other way to go offline on your iPhone is to manually sign out of the Yahoo! Messenger for iPhone app. In the app, tap on Settings, then scroll down and tap “Sign Out”. This will close the app and you will be offline, no longer able to receive messages on your iPhone.
Buzz your friends…with an iPhone twist
Buzz was one of the most requested features from our users on the iPhone app. So you’ll be happy to know you can now buzz away to your heart’s content. We also gave it a little iPhone flavor. When you want to buzz a friend, just shake your iPhone vigorously. Your friend gets buzzed on their end you’ll feel your iPhone vibrate in your hand. You’ll also see the usual BUZZ!!! message in the conversation window.
We also added a few other items… Search in the app is now integrated with the Contacts app on your iPhone. Now when you search for someone’s mobile number so you can SMS them from the Messenger app, they’ll show up, even if they’re not on your Messenger list. We also added a preference to turn off the landscape keyboard option and we fixed a bug so that empty groups in your contact list will no longer be shown.
To download the latest version of Yahoo! Messenger for iPhone (v1.2) that includes these new features, go to the iTunes App Store, or tap the App Store icon on your iPhone and search for Yahoo! Messenger. If you already have Yahoo! Messenger installed, you may also have an update alert for the app.
If you run into any issues with the new version, please use the “Report a problem” feature in the app to let us know. Tap on Settings, then scroll down and tap on “Report a problem”.
We hope you enjoy this latest version of Yahoo! Messenger for the iPhone.

Just an update, somehow they changed it, I wrote something on the status line (i.e. On mobile) after closing the app it shows "On mobile" but with the Idle icon-yellow clock (Available-yellow circle). Before it literally won't change to idle, they're tweaking it I guess.

What file exactly? You're referring to the iPhone apps right? You mean photo being sent to you or something else? I haven't had any other file transfers with Beejive except for photos, or voice (video for 3GS)

I've deleted Beejive and textfree lite for this. I only want to stay permanently connected to one or two people so we all got messenger accounts and started using this one. Works very well, though I too am missing my avatar and it didn't fill in my name or anything.
If Apple ever makes an iChat app that works in the background, using this as reference would fine by me.

I was about to say this too, I've stopped using YM's app due for the fact that it somehow drains battery relatively fast compared to Beejive's. So back to Beejive for now (I'd still want to test that 2 week thing they said though)

Hmm odd, both of you have no problems while me and techiegirl has something.
Before I begin, all the features on my iPhone 3G are turned on - 3G, Wifi, Bluetooth, Location services, Push.. etc. I only have 1 app pushed, which was Beejive, but YM came in so Beejive is now off with push, YM with push on.
I used Beejive since it was released, and just by using it straight for chatting for 10 minutes or so, my battery percent doesn't go down (I'm using a separate app to check my percentage) however when I started using YM with just straight chatting on the same amount of people I regularly talk for 10 minutes, my battery percent goes down 5% if not more (I checked both Beejive and YM after full 100% charging). I did the reinstall, install thing before and I always restart my weekly. Five percent of battery is a little bit bothering for me since I can't always charge my iPhone.
I really need something that would be gentle on battery, so now I've made the switch back to Beejive.

Has anyone tested to see if it really keeps you logged in for 2 weeks? The new app is pretty awesome though :D

I was logged out once last weekend, but I don't know if was after two weeks or not. Either way, it was far more than 24 hours or 3 days from the other IM apps. It's really been pretty much perfect so far.

I was testing the whole 2 week thing on 2 different iPhones - both were disconnected in the past hour (logged in like less that 12 hours before that). I wonder if Yahoo flushes their server every few days?
I have been using Messenger on my iPhone (with push) for the past 3 weeks flawlessly. I also use the desktop version of messenger. The two work seemlessly...I log into the desktop at work and it logs me out of the iPhone. Then, while leaving work I log into the iPhone and all messages are sent to it.
Only...today (8/7/2009), suddenly the iPhone app won't stay open. I see it is trying to connect to the yahoo server and suddenly closes. Over and over again. Wonder if anyone else is having this issue.
Did not get a rush of people confirming so I assumed this must be affecting just me. Starting thinking that with the timing of things perhaps I got one of the 1.2.? versions that was buggy. Basically could not get the app to load for more than 2 seconds since yesterday. So...I uninstalled and redownloaded/installed. Seems fine once again. And, only after doing that I realized that my problems began some time yesterday since I got a few messages delivered to me today that were sent yesterday.

I've had this problem before when my data connection gets stuck. Try open Google in Safari, if that doesn't work then you know it's ur data connection. Try turning phone off and on or just turn airport mode on for like 20 sec and then off again.
Good luck :D

Just now tracking another issue. I turned a friend of mine onto the new push version of messenger. Only he has an Touch and I an iPhone. It seems over the weekend he was missing some messages I had sent to him. We were wondering why they were not delivered to his touch. We are now thinking the culprit has something to do with the version he uses while on a desktop. He is using the web version of messenger while I am using the loaded desktop version.
NOTE: before posting this sequence I wanted to let you all know that we have been using this for weeks now in the same way and all was working fine.
Here is the sequence of events:
- he is logged into messenger on the browser all day on Friday
- at the end of his work day he logs off the web/browser version (I see that on my side too that he logged out)
- a short while later he is home and logs in on his touch
- the touch goes to sleep (normal stuff)
- later that evening I decided to send him a text and his status showed as idle (normal stuff when the touch/iPHone go to sleep)
- he never got the event delivered
- on Monday, when arriving at work he logs into the web version and is delivered the message
Ideas?

I have all my notifications on but that doesnt seem to be helping.
Any ideas? Thanks
