View Full Version : Best Case that fits with dock?

I have the black 16gig 3GS and I am using incase slider case. The case is brillliant but it does not allow for it to sit on the universal or iphone dock. The bottom slider needs to be pulled out for it to sit in the dock
Anyone know of
1. Any case that sits on the dock (universal/iphone) without having to remove the bottom
2. Any dock that allows the iphone with case to sit in it
3. A holder that works with the dock that allows for the phone to held upright on a desk
Thanks!
jessica.

There are few cases that will fit in the actual dock. A skin will work but not much else.
However, there are cases where you can remove the bottom to dock.

Switch Easy cases come with a dock adapter that will fit a lot of phones with the case on. I used to own a Neo Touch on my old ipod Touch and it came with the dock adapter which now works perfectly with my iphone + incase slider in my iHome. Maybe try contacting them and see if you can just buy the dock adapter.

My friend just got a docking station that fits the iPhone while in a case. He knows the guy that is making these things. Looks pretty good and it works.

That looks promising. Do you know how long the cable is? Is it the extremely short Apple cable length or did they decide to make it a little longer like every other cell phone company does?

These do look really nice. I'd consider getting one of these if I knew that it would work with my Seidio Innocase.

Just ordered one after getting a prompt reply from the seller.
There are three sizes, for oversized cases, slim cases, and no case. Something for everyone.

How do you know if your case will actually fit though? If you tell them the specific case you have, do they tell you if it will fit?

Can you utilise the 'Speaker' with docks usually? Doesn't look like you could benefit from the use of the 'Speaker' while the iPhone is placed in that particular dock though? (made2dock)

It's not really a "case" per say, but I have an invisible shield on mine, which works beautifully with the dock.

The griffin aircurve is a dock that allows you to use the inbuilt speaker, and even amplifies it.

What my brother "doneall" means by he has a friend who knows a guy, he means me. I am the one who makes these custom docking stations.
I am an engineer and the production manager for a manufacturing company. I developed it after I upgraded my 2G iPhone to the 3GS and wanted to dock it while in a case. But I couldn't find anything anywhere, so I made my own. And I figured there must be other people in the same situation.
The base is machined from solid aluminum and has a standard sync cable pressed inside. The cable is 36" long.
Your phone is guaranteed to fit. If it doesn't, I will give you a full refund. If your not sure which pocket size you need, you can tell me what case you have and I will make sure you get the correct fit. The standard slim has been tested on the ifrogz (as seen in the pics), Seidio Innocase, and Incase Slider Case. They all fit great.
And no, it doesn't really work well if you want to use the speakers. It doesn't dampen the volume much, but it will muffle the sound quality. If playing music while docked is important to you, you are probably better off with the Sendstation Dock Extender in conjunction with an Apple docking station.
I'm currently working on a black anodized model and one made from solid oak.

From some of our correspondence:
" I make the docks on a $400,000 machine that can hold tolerances of 0.0001". It's a little bit of overkill for docking stations. "

I tried make a docking station out of oak yesterday. Didn't go so well. My machine is a little too strong. When it tried to grab the dock in the chuck, it shattered it into a hundred pieces. I guess we will be sticking to aluminum.
On a positive note, we will be sending a large batch of docking stations to our anodizing vendor today. So we should have the black ones on the website in about one more week.
And if you want a better idea of how they are made, there a some short video clips of the docks being machined on our website in the "about us" section.

Couldn't you mill a slick horizontal groove in the front that went through to the docking well? If done nicely, I don't think it would detract from the look of the dock. Could even be shaped with rounded ends somewhat like the volume slider or progress bar on an iPhone.
Just a thought...I'd buy one!

Or... a thin milled cylinder or slight cone shape (essentially, a hole in the front side) from the outer part all the way in to the speaker?

which size would fit the switcheasy rebel? i'll bet hubby would like one of these for his desk, too!
ok.... i have another question.... could you use a larger size but with a slimmer case? i.e. if you have an otterbox but also an ifrogz... will the phone sit/stay in the larger dock when it's in the smaller case?

I just got the black docks back from the anodizer yesterday. They look AWESOME! I've already shipped a few to some people who pre-ordered.
To answer some questions. Yes the home button is still accessible. I milled out a section in front so that the home button is fully visible.
I've thought about trying to add some holes to improve sound quality. I'm not an acoustic engineer, so I think it would be a lot of guessing and checking as to what would give the clearest sound. I also thought it might make take away from the looks of the dock. But I think I'll try it sometime soon. If I stumble upon something good, I'll let you know.
You can always use a smaller case or no case with a larger pocket size. The phone just won't be supported in back. It will only be held up by the 30-pin connector. Which is fine as long you are gentle with it. I hate to admit it, but if the case size is changing all the time, the Innodock might be the better way to go.

It's actually pretty good it drops a little as far as lows but not much. It's a little muffled but almost hard to tell. Text, email and alerts are really good. It looks like it might change depending on your case. I have the innocase 2 and its flush on the back of the dock around the sides and the front it has a space. It seem to be enough for the sound to pass through. Overall it sounds pretty good.

I have an Innocase as well and I'm strongly considering this dock. How is the connection when you place it in the dock? Is it very easy to just pop it in the dock and have it connect properly or do you have to wiggle it to make sure that it connects properly? I'm also wondering if I should wait for the sound fix.

1) The switcheasy rebel serpeant takes the "thick" pocket. Also keep in mind that a correct fit is always gauranteed. If anyone ever has any problems of any kind with a docking station from made2dock, we will always stand behind our product and do whatever it takes to make sure you are satisfied. And I'm not just saying that. We actually mean it.
2) As far as placing it into the dock, you will not need to "wiggle" it any anything like in order to fit it into the docking station. That's one of the advantages of having the pocket made to fit your iPhone. The pocket guides the phone into the correct position.
3) I have a question for those of you wanting a clearer sound. Technically the iPhone only has one speaker location. The other is the microphone. So if I make a hole for the sound to escape better, do I make one hole or two? If I make just the one, it might look funny being asymmetrical. So do I make two holes just so that it looks better? I'm leaning towards two holes even though the second hole is useless.

Depending on the size of the hole, the second hole could actually be useful for speakerphone/voice control while it's docked. Maybe you should do some experimenting with trying to use speakerphone without a hole and then add a hole and see if there's any noticeable difference.

No wiggling it slides in very nice not like the innodock that you have to pick up to get a good connection. It sits flush on the back with good support it really is nice. If you want quality audio you might consider a sound dock. The sound I receive with this case is not bad compared to the iphone speakers. This dock is more for charging and syncing.

Well, that depends. I will make a some prototypes in the next few days. So I could have some silver ones ready to ship by the end of next week. However if you really need black, that might take a lot longer. I'm not sure if I will make it a standard dock and have a bunch anodized black or not. Well, that depends. I will make a some prototypes in the next few days. So I could have some silver ones ready to ship by the end of next week. However if you really need black, that might take a lot longer. I'm not sure if I will make it a standard dock and have a bunch anodized black or not. I guess I'll wait and see if it looks good with holes.
I would prefer black. I'll wait a bit to see what you come up with before I order. Thanks!

Is there any demand for a dock that would have the RCA outputs for video and audio along with the USB? I could do this pretty easily by using a cable like this...

I'm thinking it could be especially useful if used on a dock-IN-desk in an entertainment center.

The sound hole is coming soon. I ran out of time this weekend. I hope to have some pictures up this week. I already know a few things I want to try, I just need to program the machine.
Also I've got some of the RCA output cables on order. I hope to have that available as a standard option in the next few weeks.
And thanks to everyone who has had positive things to say about the docks. Word of mouth is extremely valuable for us. We don't have the advertising budget that most of our competition has.

When you say "standard option", you mean that you can get it with the RCA cables if you want to but you don't have to, right? I just want to make sure that I'm going to be able to order the dock with just the USB cable. Looking forward to ordering once you have the sound hole figured out! Thanks.

First off, the RCA cables would basically be an upgrade option. Not a requirement.
I have tested the sound holes. With the holes in the dock, I can't decide if the sound quality is better or worse when NOT docked as opposed to docked. It is defintely different. When undocked, the iPhone speaker sounds a little "tinny". When it is docked, the sound is more evened out. Not sure how to describe it. Without question though, the sound quality is much better with the holes than before. I will try to post a Youtube video so you can hear the difference for yourself. Here are some images.

Really excited now that you have the sound hole as well. Now i need to think about the audio options. There is the cable that you show, which is composite, and there is also a component cable (both are $49 from Apple). Safe to assume that if I wanted component (RGB) you'd be able to order one of those as well and build it? I'd be willing to wait if it was considered a "special order".
Thanks for doing this!
Edit: I'd actually be willing to mail you my cable (RGB) for integration since I already own one. Would that be a possibility?

Answers first...
1. Yes there are two holes. One for the speaker, and one for the microphone.
2. I do believe this is the final version. I might continue to play around with it, but I don't think I can get the sound quality much better.
3. You can pre-order now if you like, but the supply for the black will be limited at first. I only had time to make 5 before I shipped a batch to the anodizer. I won't be putting it on the website until I have a chance to make more. Those of you that have been following this thread will of course get priority.
4. Scirica, it is possible to assemble your cable into the dock. Especially if the thickness of the 30-pin connector measures 6.5mm through 6.65mm. I can fit a thicker connector, but would be a special. I cannot make a thinner one work currently.

It is another special order. Someone wanted a thinner dock, like SchneiderMan. He also wanted the front completely open, instead of a milled access slot. So this is what I came up with. I'll call it the dock-IN-case (slant). The angle allows full access to the front while still supporting the phone in the back. I don't have any available in black currently.

Just another thumbs up for Dan and his company Made2Dock....
I was looking for a docking solution for a colorware painted 3Gs I had done and then installed a Bodyguardz full body film onto of. This makes it impossible to use any normal dock without ruining at least the protection film if not the paint as well. I came across Dan's dock late on Wednesday night, spoke on Thursday about changing the design, went over a few design details on Friday, he machined two for me over the weekend and sent out out, I should have them by Wednesday at the latest..... All absolutely wonderful when I only had couple weeks to work with before I needed to give the dock and the phone as a gift. So there you go, what is now called the "slant with sound ports" I guess.... not even from just concept to production - actually from the initial design problem to door step in under a weeks time. Combine that with the quality that others with some of his other docks have expressed and it's one product I know will be exactly what I was looking for. Now I pay for him to do up this program, so you can thank me for that, but I'll be honest, to have it made exactly to my specs is worth every dime and I'm absolutely sure we'll work on at least one other dock idea I have fairly soon.
Thanks again Dan!

I have had my dock for 3 weeks now and I have zero complaints. The dock is well made and very high quality - not sure of the exact weight, but the thing is sturdy and heavy. Looks sharp next to any mac and complements the iPhone great!
I snapped a few photos without a case and with a couple different cases for reference. The version I chose was the slim, which is working out great.

Sorry it is taking a while to get better pictures of the new docking stations up on the website. I will try to get some decent pictures up soon. I'm currently working on getting some professional pictures of the products.
Yes, you can clear anodize aluminum. However it wouldn't accomplish much for this product. It might actually dull the look a little. Clear anodizing is usually performed on aluminum that is going in a corrosive environment or if the quality of the aluminum is not good. The aluminum that is used in these docking stations is aircraft quality, 6061-T6 aluminum. It is commonly used in aircraft wings and fuselages. So basically you can drop the dock off of a 10 story building and it will still work. It will have one serious dent, but it will still be in one piece.

If you are referring to the chrome-like finish, the answer is... maybe. If I were to throw the docks in a vibratory tumbler with a fine grit polishing media, the end result might be something similar. Its something I want to try at some point.

I think I get it now. You are referring to the 2G back of the iPhone. Yes that is what clear anodizing typically looks like. I personally don't like the look, so its something I don't plan on introducing.
The dock-IN-desk will fit any hole from 2.95" to 3.35" in diameter. It also ships with a strip of self-adhesive foam rubber that you can wrap around the base to remove any "slop" in the fit. I personally use it at home and love it.

To answer a few questions:
1. Unfortunately we cannot control when your credit card is charged. We currently only offer Paypal and Google Checkout which basically require the funds to be withdrawn immediately. I would prefer that the charge be held until it ships also, but it is not an option for us.
2. There has been a delay in shipments lately for the black docking stations. The demand for them far exceeded our early projections and we stocked out. More were made as soon as possible and are now at the anodizer. I will be picking them tomorrow and hope to ship the late orders as soon as possible. Any order for a silver model will ship in 1 to 2 days. Please keep in mind that at this point the docks are made to order. These are not items that are mass produced in China and are now just sitting on a shelf in a warehouse.
3. The dock-IN-desk can accommodate different hole sizes because it ships with a self-adhesive strip of foam rubber that can be wrapped around the base to take up any slop in the hole.
4. The "oversized" pocket was designed for the Otterbox, however the dock-IN-desk isn't currently available in "oversized" because the very large pocket would cut into the base. A special can be made so that the "oversized" pocket can fit. The hole size would then need to be no smaller than 3.25".
5. Also keep in mind that we are a service oriented company. If you are not happy with the product in any, we will be happy to exchange it. Or you can return it for a full refund. We will always do everything within our power to make sure you are completely satisfied.

I don't think there is a heavier dock out there. It's easy to leave it on the table when you pick up your iPhone...

I have the innodock jr every time I use it I need to pick it up to connect it and I need hold it down to disconnect. With the made-2-dock it's solid as a rock it connects with ease no effort at all. The weight of the dock by itself is about 1 pound. I don't think you will find a heavier, more solid dock out there. But honestly how much effort it takes to pull the phone out of the dock depends on the cable color. The white cable is a tighter fit. Removing the phone with one hand takes a little practice but can easily be done. The black cable on the other hand is easier to remove with one hand. The weight of the dock itself is enough to keep it from moving.
As for the black Slant... I'm working on it. There have been numerous inquiries about it. We hope to have it ready in another week or two.

I received my black sound dock the other day and I can truly say they are a thing of beauty!
The hefty weight keeps the dock stable so placing and lifting the iPhone on/off the dock is a breeze one handed. On the sound, I really think it's even better when on the dock. There is no distortion at all and I think it may even sound a little louder which is great for my alarm clock App. :D I am very pleased with that. One issue I have is that the standard cord is a little short but an extension cable should fix that if needed at all. Another small issue is that if you are a girl with nails, it's a little bit harder to get your finger in the scooped out area to access the home button, but it's very do-able.
I am waiting for the black slant sound dock to be available which Dan said should be soon, to see which model I like best but all in all this is a fantastic dock and well worth it!
Dan was a pleasure to work with and communication was excellent.
I only wish that all companies were this easy to work with.
Someone had mentioned that they thought the dock was too tall. I don't think so at all. In fact, it makes it that much easier to get you hand around the iPhone.
The rubber protecto on the bottom of the dock along with it's hefty weight helps keep the dock in place and it doesn't slip or move around making it again, very easy to dock/undock your phone.
I have the Speck CandyShell case and it fits in the slim dock perfectly. It sits down in the dock enough that even with a slight bump the iPhone will stay docked and not damage the connector.
This is one of the best iPhone purchases I have ever made.:)

I finally have a better image of the Slant on the website. The Silver Slant is available for immediate delivery. I have also finished the design of the Black Slant, however it takes custom cables that won't be delivered for another 2 or 3 weeks.
The Sound option is also available for immediate delivery. The pictures of that will be uploaded tomorrow. The holes are identical to what is shown in the Slant pictures.

These are absolutely gorgeous - I'm going to order a few black slant models as soon as they are available. Do you know if they ship to the UK?

Actually many of the docks that come nowadays seem to anticipate the user getting some kind of a case so they often fit anyway. I think iPhone 3G case (http://www.inspiretech.com/c-100-iphone-3g-cases.aspx) sizes are pretty much the same with only small variations in thickness.

I ordered my black slant dock on Monday and I received it today. Great product as well as the customer satisfaction.
