Anyone tried this alternative to IS/BSE? If so, please provide your impressions.

I've viewed a Youtube application video, and there are some sparse "reviews" out there. I read w/ interest the announcement of Wrapsol on iLounge, wherein iLounge states it shut down commenting due to astro-turfing....http://www.ilounge.com/index.php/news/comments/wrapsol-offers-protective-film-for-ipod-iphone/

I have been using the wrapsol skin on my white 3gs for about a week and I think it is a great product. I have tried the best skin ever for my black 3g and it got really dirty and yellow. The big difference between the two skins is that the wrapsol doesnt have the orange peel marshmallow texture like other skins. It feels like a matte or brush metal, kind of like to 1st gen iphone. So you do not get any smudges or fingerprints on it. Also the wrapsol doesnt fold over the edges of the phone so not only is it an easy installation, but you also do not have to worry about the corners lifting. So as of now, I am very happy with this skin and im currently using it with my griffin reveal and my iskin solo (fits perfectly). I ordered the sena ultaslim pouch so that I can use my iphone naked with just the wrapsol skin on it. Ill post pictures later.

I thought about trying it but it doesn't cover the bezel and my BSE doesn't lift. If they make one that actually protects the part of the phone that gets scratched the easiest I may give it a try. I'm also not sure I want that matte feeling all the time.

That's what I was thinking of trying too, but I haven't gotten the Wrapsol yet. Can you post pictures of what your phone looks like with the Wrapsol on the back, inside the Griffin Reveal case? Do you find there are any problems with the clear back of the Reveal case scratching easily?

Also, did you end up using the screen protector that comes with the Griffin Reveal or something else? Just curious what it's like.

Thanks!

I will post some pics when I have some time. To answer your questions, I dont find any problems with the clear back of the reveal case scratching easily, because really all clear cases will scratch by just staring at it too long. It is not a big deal for me. I am using a switcheasy screen right now. BTW if your interested in the wrapsol skin, im selling a few matte back only skins for the 3gs. PM me if you want to get one.

So far, with the exception of a slight short cut on one side, I am VERY pleased with this product. The matte feel of it is sweet.

I ended up ordering the wrapsol (direct from their site) & it was delivered today... I plan to apply it late tonight. After mulling over literally dozens of different cases, I'm hoping wrapsol will end up being "enough" for me. I end up wasting money on cases (at least I did that for my 2G iPPhone) that I end up hating/disliking after only a few days of use, so I am maintaining my resolve & not ordering anymore cases. (I cancelled an order for the Griffin Reveal, and I have had the PS Air Jacket for several weeks already)

This skin eliminates finger prints from the back of your phone. Gone. So nice.

I have to say with the exception of not covering the bezel, this is an fantastic product. The matte texture is excellent. The phone is beautiful not covered up by some cheap overpiced piece of plastic. I'm caseless with a pouch these days. I got so sick of covering up this phone.

Oh and btw Wrapsol customer service is excellent so far.

teneighteen
Aug 4, 2009, 10:48 PM
Wow that looks good! Seems like the matte finish might even help to conceal minor scratches on the iPhone itself. I wonder if it leaves any residue when it gets removed though...

Now I just need to find a way to get a Wrapsol film shipped to Canada without the crazy fees they charge. Hopefully someone on ebay will ship with reasonable prices.

And, I gotta decide whether to keep the Griffin Reveal or not...

Ferris23
Aug 4, 2009, 10:53 PM
It leaves no residue and it would certainly hide scratches, though depending on how deep they were.

When I say no finger prints though, I mean none. It's pretty impressive stuff. Unless you are eating chicken wings and pizza you pretty much won't have to wipe the back of your phone again.

Why is it so expensive to ship to Canada?

I'm not sure why, but Wrapsol.com charges $20.24 to ship to Canada :(

BTW, did you put the front screen protector on as well? I'm thinking the matte finish on the screen might be a bit weird, no?

The screen doesn't have the matte appearance. It's clear, similar to the screen protectors from InvisibleShield, BSE, etc.

Ferris23
Aug 4, 2009, 11:22 PM
I forgot all about that. I took the screen skin off. It is like BSE but it's a little too thick. It offers great protection but I just found it too thick. Like when you press the home button you could really feel the extra depth it created.

Plus my armband has a tendency to stick to the screen and this would have made it worse.

Still clear and the orange peel was very minimal, just a very thick screen skin. I would say it felt like 2 BSE fronts stuck together.

There very well may be a reason they went thick, not really sure why. The micro fiber they include is also very nice.

cubbie5150
Aug 5, 2009, 04:03 AM
Well, I applied the wrapsol (back only) earlier tonight. I previously had a BSE simple back.. The wrapsol was much more difficult (for me) to apply than the BSE--understandable since it wraps over the sides a bit...

I had to peel it off & re-spray about 5 minutes in as I noticed one side seemed to be cut too big (it draped over the bezel; the camera hole was aligned properly). I thought I was gonna have to peel it off & throw away, but I kept at it, and it just seemed to "massage" itself into place--for the most part.

I love the texture of the skin, and the matte look. The problem I see developing is that there are several spots at the edges where the film appears, well, "ratty"/""ragged". Looks like the skin won't hold up well after putting in & talking out from my pocket for a period of time. But, we'll see, I guess.

All in all, I "like" the wrapsol, but I question durability given how the edges don't look clean merely a couple hours after application.

If I could find a clear case that didn't scratch easily, didn't scratch my iphone, covered the bezel at least partially & isn't any bulkier than the Griffin Reveal, I'd definitely buy it. Too bad such a case doesn't exist...can't understand how such a case can't seem to be made. Even though I hate the looks of them, I may break my vow & get a Speck candy shell (black) since it seems to meet most of my prerequisites (too bad it's not clear); though I like their idea of inner rails (or whatever they use) to prevent scratching the phone itself.

Ferris23
Aug 5, 2009, 06:20 AM
Sounds like you either got a bad skin or botched the install. My edges are totally flush and aren't going anywhere. The entire back looks flawless actually. Something is up with what you have going on because this skin is on for good on my phone as it has been for those who have reviewed it

I'd call Wrapsol but it sort of sounds like a so so install especially since you had to peel it up a few times. But that still shouldn't matter. Mine was perfect in abot 10 minutes after setting but they do say to wait 24 hours for best results. I have had mine in my pocket and wedged in my armband and the wrapsol doesn't budge and is perfectly flush down both sides.

Rayfire
Aug 5, 2009, 07:59 PM
They really left those two bottom edges ...that makes me tempt to try it

So far I've tried Zagg and BSE back (not the simple one) both will just attract dust in the long run especially on the edges no matter how perfect you've installed it.

Do you think this skin will NOT collect dust too much?

Ferris23
Aug 5, 2009, 08:50 PM
Let me tell you something, in all honestly, you will get practically no dust at all with this skin. I'm serious. I know the dust, I love BSE but the material is tacky so naturally it collects a bit of dust after a while. I would do a clean on my phone pretty much every day at work with a moist wipe. No big deal, I never had a problem with peeling but it's still dust buildup and annoying.

This stuff is the complete opposite, I have had it in my pocket for 2 days all day at work and no dust whatsoever. It repels it almost, and 100% repels finger prints. Normally skins collect the most right after install, this was good to go after about 10-15 minutes

And like I said before, I put this stuff in my armband the day I put it on, and it takes a good tug to get my phone out of the armband. This material is flat all around and stuck damn good.

I am so impressed Wrapsol stuff. I'd like to see them redesign it without the corners but with enough extension to reach and cover the bezel. The matte feeling never gets old. It's not a marshmallow type matte either like the matte Incase slider, feels very nice. If you're anything like me you will not want to put this phone in a case after you feel this stuff.

Well, 24 hours after install, the wrapsol seems to have "cured" very nicely. In my last post, I expressed doubts as to longevity of this skin a/c rough edges, but they seem to have "laid down" over the past 24 hours. I agree with ferris--the matte feel of this skin kicks ass!! As I posted in the Griffin Reveal thread, wrapsol on my 3G S + Reveal + BSE simple back on the Reveal is gonna be what I run with (assuming Griffin ever ships the damn Reveal to me!!!).

I wait with interest to see how the wrapsol holds up over time, but I cna say that after only 24 hours, it looks promising. I wish I had a camera so I could post pics like ferris (only "camera" I have is my 3G S, and my 2G iPhone is currently on loan to someone).

Do you think the Solo FX will stain the Wrapsol? I like the Solo FX, but it made me sad it stained Rayfire's BSE.

It is indeed sad since I was looking forward to the same setup of skin+Solo FX combo but it stained. Here's what I've got from BSE when I told them about the staining issues:

Hello Rayfire,

We have been told that unstable dyes, like that of some cases and jeans, may stain the material. Not all cases will discolor the skin. The skin material is gas permeable which lets the air and solution evaporate but when in contact with these unstable types of dyes, may transfer their color to it. We don't know of any skin material that is not gas permeable; it has to be otherwise the air and solution wouldn't evaporate.

Thank you and best regards,

Sherry T.
www.BestSkinsEver.com

So according to her answer, if the skin material is gas permeable then gets mixed up with an unstable dye - color transfer is highly possible. I don't know yet if this is the same with Wrapsol, can anyone comment on the skin+case(i.e. Wrapsol+SoloFX) setup combo?

I'm no expert, but it seems like all of the popular brands of skins are gas permeable-- how else would they dry after you apply them with soapy water? A skin that isn't gas permeable seems like it would be more of a sticker. Like Gelaskins.

So, I'm going to guess that the Wrapsol IS gas permeable and will probably get stained. I really really want someone to prove me wrong though.

Like others, I'm impressed by the overall package and presentation. However, I dropped the bottle while my hands were wet and it shattered so I couldn't complete the install. After work later I'm gonna go pick up some eye glass cleaner and try it again. I hope this works out, because I think it would look great with my brushed bezel, and anti glare screen.

The solution is nothing more than a tiny drop of dish soap and water. Just fill a bowl and dip the skin in.

Yeah just about any fluid will work really, soap and water work best because it allows the film to slide better to align. But anything that evaporates will work.

Those bubbles over the scratches should go away, once it's dried try pressing down a bit with your nail a bit to spread the film out and get rid of them.

I just ordered one after dealing with their customer support. Nothing's changed on their site in regard to shipping to Canada, but if you send a message to them, they'll probably work something out (like they did for me).

The only thing I'm not quite happy with is that it's coming via USPS...which means it'll take a while to get here.

But from the posts I've seen here, I figure it'd be worth the wait.

Once I get it, I'm planning on going nekked or maybe using it with a Sena Ultraslim (depending on whether it will fit or not).

:D

Edit: BTW - their customer service and response to emails was very impressive and helpful.

got mine in the post today to the UK (from the wrapsol site).

Good packaging, fairly easy to apply (easier than invisible shield), matt finish looks cool. Mines gone on ok, got a bit of dust under the skin on the back but just one spot. Rather this blemish than putting a case on the phone.

Wont protect if dropped but stops it getting scratched.

Is it really that hard to install a skin ?

for a similar price you can get a full rear protection

this product only covers the back, makes it no different than the sticker girl stuff

This isn't for those looking for full protection. Its for those of us who hate the bulk and appearance of cases, yet don't want our phones to look worn out from regular use, and not slip out of our hands and make us regret we didn't have a nice case.

A little tip if you get a white speck of dust on the back, just take a black Sharpie marker and dot the spot, you won't notice it's there anymore. Blends right in.

Who cares if this doesn't cover the bezel. Most skins don't cover the FULL bezel anyway not to mention bezel coverage usually collects dust and peels off over time anyway. I just rub my bezel with a scotch brite pad if it gets scratched, brushed aluminum looks better than the cheesy blingy chrome.

Got my kit today for 3GS and applied it. Went on pretty easy -- actually easier than I thought it would be. I think I used a little too much spray though. I was having to try and hold down all the edges for several minutes after I applied the film. Not a huge deal and it worked out fine. Just don't have this idea the edges will immediately stick down if you get them wet enough. You'll have to work at it some.

Packaging is A LOT nicer than it needs to be, but pretty. They know the people they are marketing to, that's for sure! Don't know how it'll be long term, but impressed so far.

I'm going to have to try this stuff, it sounds nice. I wonder if you could apply it to a BSE?

I have the BSE installed on my 3GS (the one that covers the bezel) and am pretty impressed how much it has held up going in and out of my pocket since day 1 (a couple of months now?). I installed a BSE on my 5G ipod several years ago and it has held up just fine, too. It's never discolored either, so I don't know what that's about.

The phone naked is pretty slippery, but with a BSE on it gives it a grippy feel, which I like. I don't like cases, I think they're too bulky, plus the phone is too cool and sleek to conceal.

I like the idea of a matte finish, but the Wrapsol doesn't completely cover the phone. With my BSE and a Crystal shield on the front, there is no added bulk and it's nearly completely covered. I wish the Wrapsol would protect the bezel.

Maybe I'll order one and see how it feels on top of a BSE. If it sucks, I won't be out much money anyway.

Did you have any problems taking your Wrapsol film off? I've had mine on for a bit, and although I really like it, I'm thinking of going naked for a bit? When taking off the matte back, is there any residue left over?

Thanks.

I got it here in two days from MA to FL. Maybe another day to TX?

I had just a little bit of hazy look (normal according to the directions) the first 12-18 hours and a couple of areas that looked like lint from cleaning the phone prior to application had remained (like very fine fibers), but 98% of that has totally disappeared now. It looks like the material has completely melted and bonded to the phone. I know it hasn't, but that's what it looks like! :D

I was happy the way it looked right after I applied it. Now I'm really happy!

just ordered one of these bad boys tonight, can't wait. I've been using a leather pouch but was holding off on getting a film for the back until I found a promo code for wrapsol. use "chatter" during checkout to get 25% off! what a great deal, it came to just under 19 bucks and free shipping.

To the people that have used this, does it help hide hairline scratches that are in the back? I would think that the cloudy matte finish would at least make them less visible. It was one reason I chose this over its competitors.

Ordered the Wrapsol package for my 3G yesterday morning. It arrived today.

And this is definitely the best accessory I've purchased for my iPhone. The back looks fantastic, and the matte appearance hides all of the surface scratches that I had, and some were fairly deep.

I'll definitely be sticking with these folks in the future.

i don't know what you've tried but rubbing alcohol usually can clean things very well, and it evaporates super quick so you run less of a risk of damaging anything. Though I can't say i've tried this on my phone, or wrapsol skin, I just got mine today!

I've had mine on the back of my phone for over a month now and it doesn't really get that dirty. Sometimes a little bit of dirt/dust gathers around the edge at the top, but it's nothing that a quick swipe of the finger nail doesn't take off. Maybe it's because mine is on a black phone though?

You can when you are first applying it, just keep re-wetting it. Once you have it down and it dries then it's done. But for the first install you can pull it up and have at it a few times.

Thats why i chose to go buy directly through the official site. The guy over the phone was very courteous, and proposed to send me two replacement full covers without any charges for shipping thru fedex... also gave me tips on how to apply the skin to the fone.

Tip : Power Support Anti-Glare for Front and Wrapsol for back is the best combination ever, lots of people at the airports and public places do inquire abt how my fone looks much more decent in matte finish.

Yea, On my last application of the film, i had a single string of lint sticking on the edge of my fone, which in turn one edge of the skin started to give out.

Check this out.. regarding Lifetime Replacement Warranty, though not much info, but quite an important commitment from their side.

I'm aware that it's a skin vs a case, the comparison is that they both offer a clean, matte look. Personally, I get bored easily and don't want to buy a skin that I can only use once. Once I decide to take it off and put on a case, that's it, the skin is wasted. So this option is better for me.

you can put a case over the wrapsol. i switch it around a bit. from white case to black case to no case with just the wrapsol.

what do you mean by "buy a skin that i can only use once"? the skin will stay on the phone until you take it off, if there is anything wrong with the skin, wrapsol would be happy enough to send you another. theres no need to take off the skin to put on a case. the skin is thin enough.

Do they work under slider cases or something like ifrogz? I had a bodyguardz skin before, and nothing would fit over it except for silicone cases like iskin solo. I have a case similar to the mophie juice pack and even that wouldn't fit over my bodyguardz, so I finally ripped it off. If wrapsol would work with a case then I'd definitely reconsider getting it.

I had been using Wrapsol on my iPhone for like a week when something funny happened. My phone accidentally fell a height of about 3 feet onto tiled floor. It wasn't that much of a hard drop, it's something a good product should've withstand.Well, I checked the front and the back and there was some nasty looking scratches. My point is that there are only a few products out there, one is Gadgetshieldz, that can actually withstand something like that. As for the rest, you'll have to be really careful how you handle your phone.

my wrapsol ultrad'd iphone 4 survived a 3 feet drop off my desk onto the concrete floor at work after the charging cable caught on the arm of my chair when I was rolling back. Flung is probably a better term for what happened. Landed on the top edge of the metal band, the side pieces bore the full force of the drop and my iphone walked out unscathed. I almost died of a heartattack thinking that my iphone would have been damaged.

I've had a luke warm experience with them. I've had to get a warranty replacement, charged me 14 dollars for it. The new one I sent a complaint by email about the cutting error on the shield but told them it'd be fine, I didn't feel like paying another 14 dollars for a warranty replacement. They sent me out a replacement for free 5 days after I sent the email. I will admit they are slow on the response time. Not 1-2 business days as they promised
