How Does AirPort Express Work?

I was wondering if u wanted a wireless connection do u need to have the AirPort Extreme base staion? If not how do u get connected to the internet because its olny connected to a power outlet? sorry if this sounds stupid but it confused me

there is an ethernet jack on the bottom. then you can configure the router just like you would a normal base station.

You can use the Express without a Basestation but you have to have *something* connected to the internet.

If you want to use the Express as a wireless hub in place of a Basestation, you can, but it has to be connected to a cable/dsl modem or a network with internet. It will allow up to ten users with 802.11b/g capability to enjoy wireless access.

If you have a Basestation network already, you can put the express anywhere you want (next to your stereo, or where you want your printer) and it will extend the range of your network, as well as giving you the wireless printing and Airtunes access.

the airport express works just like a base station, it is a base station that includes audio jack, and has its power brick built in.
it also has a wan port.

There is an ethernet port on the Airport Express that you can connect to your broadband modem. That will provide you with a wireless signal that can be spread to up to 10 computers. There is also an optical/analog audio out, and a USB out that can be used to connect a printer (from Apple's supported list of course).
