iPod Corrupted Shuffle?

I recently purchased a 3ft Male USB to Female USB cable from monoprice for $.80 to use as an extension to the existing cable. It worked the first time but the second time I plugged it in it said, "CURRUPTED IPOD DETECTED, RESTORE OR DISCONNECT AND TRY AGAIN" I disconnected and tried again and it worked, but I am wondering if its because of the cable because I never got that message before.
