View Full Version : How big is your... iTunes collection?

wowser

Perhaps this has asked before, but how large is everyone's music collection? (and how did it get there?) Mine is a somewhat meagre 4.4gb (832 songs) , but all of it has been from downloads (mainly legal, free sites, like Epitonic). Also, which artist has the biggest share of your collection (in my case, Kraftwerk)?

Probably about a third purchased. I have no idea which artist is in the top spot.

FYI I starting running into some weird (and sporadic) duplicate entry problems at around 50GB. Turned off iTunes file organizing and it's been fine since then.

LOL compilations do scary things to you...I think there might be a New Kids on the Block song lurking in my iTunes somewhere. :)

3499 songs *must get one more to restore harmony of roundness* and basically all legal. Well, a couple Limewire downloads where I had the album and lost it shhhhhhh.... :( I'm slowly buying those back through iTunes though, cuz there's only three or four of them and I feel guilty. :)

Maybe 40 out of that are from iTMS and the rest from my CDs. I let myself buy one iTMS song every week. That's my system. :D

Came accross a weird thing in iTMS yesterday. When they added the Bad Boy 10th Anniv. collection, they finally got Hypnotize by Biggie, which I've always wanted. I could get the preview, but when I tried to download the song (immediately after searching for it!) I got this error, something like "The song you are looking for has either been relocated or removed" and it wouldn't let me buy. And then today, I searched again, found it again, was asked to update my billing info when I tried to buy it (nothing changed! :o ) and then, it went back to the ITMS homepage. When I searched for it again, the uncensored version was gone and only the clean version remained. Weirdness!

Also (to end the random ranting) I wish they would add a button for hip-hop that toggles between uncensored and censored versions of the same song. A lot of times you can never tell which one comes up in a list until you get it in browse view, and if you find the wrong version, there's no link back to the other one. :(

10391 songs, all from CD's I own and not yet complete (I have a lot of CD's). 31 days, 17 hrs, 35 minutes.

277.73 GB in lossless format
47.31 GB in aac format (the same library - the aac's are for my next iPod - hopefully it'll fit.)

I started converting the AAC's on Tuesday night and my PB's still grinding them out! should be finished later today (they're 160 kbps files).

I've never bought a tune from iTunes either.

This happened to me on Tuesday when I was trying to download the free song of the week, I got the same error mesage you did, and it wouldn't let me download it....

My current library is 4,073 songs, 11.5 days, 19.54 GB.
I have 15 more GB worth of AAC on an external that doesn't travel with me.
Bob Dylan is my biggest artist on here: 475 songs, 1.5 days, 2.67. I used to have about a week's worth of Dylan--but I did some housecleaning. Still trying to decide what to do with the 150+ boots.

Given the amount of bootlegging coming from the Grateful Dead, Dylan, and Neil Young--I can't say it's entirely legal.

See sig ;)

Around 60% are legal, I only ever buy stuff I can't find in HMV/Virgin/Woolies/etc.. which since I have quite bizarre taste, accounts for rather a large amount. Besides, that's the 40% I never listen to anyways, those stores only ever sell poppity-punkity crap.
I do keep a complete backup of my CD collection, since most of these are uber-limited Ant-Zen or Adnoiseam releases, and I do not want them to get screwed up!

I just hope they go to the trouble of getting smaller labels on board. I wouldn't mind getting some Dressy Bessy or Ladytron legally. Also TMBG, ever since eMusic.com (anyone remember that?) went buh-bye, I've not had my legal mp3 fix.

33 The Offspring: Pretty Fly For A White Guy (feat. KoRn Lowrider Remix)
33 Zwan: Honestly
30 Me First And The Gimme Gimmes: Seasons In The Sun
30 Me First And The Gimme Gimmes: Nothing Compares 2 You

I'm more ashamed of my one - 1 - Mel C song (from an Austin Powers OST - and yes it is unchecked), that is far worse than having a cople of Punk/Ska tunes... ;)

If you look at the rest of my Top 15, then LTJ isn't exactly out-of-character either... There's nothing like a cool punk band with a full brass lineup... :D

900 songs, 3.85gb. of mostly my CD collection, and now I've been downloading iTunes purchases. At one point I would buy used CD's at the music store, upload them to my computer and return them for more.

The only thing I don't like is that I don't have an iPod yet and have to burn everything on my external drive or on my G5--neither of which I can carry around with me.

But I just got an email today in which Doug as produced a new Applescript for seperate iTunes libraries with their own preferences. Perhaps I'll get that so I can put my favorite tunes on my laptop.

To your latter question, you have to log in, in order to download the free songs (with an Apple or AOL acct). So I think unless you find a way to fake it :) you cannot get the free music if you live outside the iTMS service area. :(

I just re-did the Internet ITunes Registry thing to find out my big artists. Most of them are opera/symphonic, which doesn't really address what I listen too most at the moment...Benjamin Britten, Gilbert and Sullivan and Giacomo Puccini, came in at the top. My top pop music, which is what I listen to more, were The Cure and The Smiths. None of my hip-hop records, but not such a surprise since most of the people whom I listen to don't have that many albums yet, except the Roots, and I don't own that many of their albums yet :(.

I like how the Registry also shows top artists by play. Utada Hikaru came out like 50% ahead of the closest second for me and I only have two of her albums. Guess now I know where I should be spending my money. :)

4923 Songs, 14.7 Days, and 19.36 GB.

All legal.

Ahh but what is legal? ;)

I purchased the majority of my music from iTunes replacing A LOT of illegal stuff but I then turned around and redownloaded most of it at allofmp3.com in a high bit\sample rate in a non DRMed flavor of AAC. Funny thing is redownloading it again was pennies for each track so it wasn’t a big deal and explain to me the difference between ripping it off of a CD vs. redownloading it in a different format after purchasing it legally online.

I thought sharing with friends was part of Fair Usage. Maybe I'm wrong. Though it is better than going to the library and copying all their cds.

1305 in AAC 192kb. All from CDs I own. None from iTunes store. Although I regret not getting Nelly Furtado's AOL Sessions when the Pepsi/iTunes promo was going on. Then again, I couldn't find any Pepsi/iTunes bottles at the corner shops I frequent.

No. You should buy your own copy. And Fair Use doesn't really apply here. The Fair Use rules are there to protect journalists and librarians, not to allow you to copy music that your friend paid for.

15.96 GB (just enough to fit on the 20GB I won from iTMS!)

145 Songs are from iTMS (about 60 of which were free). I like the concert series and the exclusive tracks.

Biggest artist is Beatles - 13 albums, 182 songs (don't have Magical Mystery Tour or later collections). Sting is in 2nd.

Also, I do have some illegal songs on there. My bandmates burn CD's of music and share them around when we are trying to learn a new song or cover. I usually keep them on until I learn the song or decide to download the track from iTMS.

I have 9.46 GB of music right now.

Excluding artists that aren't really artists (such as "(Unknown Artist)" and "SNES"), the artist I have the most songs from is PaleDeth, with 37 songs, including 2 co-ops with other artists.

Never heard of PaleDeth? PaleDeth's page can be found here (http://www.modarchive.com/artists/paledeth/).

Only 388 songs, 1 day, 1.89 GB Some are from my CD collection and my boyfriend's CD collection. The rest are from iTMS. Even got a few free with all that Pepsi I drank. Always felt suspicious tilting the bottles and putting back any that weren't winners. I miss those days though :)

Well you learn something new everyday.
Though getting music from your friend is a little better than p2p I would think.

wow, rhpenguin. I think that's more Led Zepplin than I've got music, total. :)

Well, let's see, now that I'm home at my Mac. After tonight's iTunes purchases :o I've got:

1423 songs, 4.1 days, 7.59 GB
390 artists, 349 albums

Of that, I've purchased from the iTMS:

songs, 20.1 hours, 1.15 GB

The rest is 90% from my own CDs, ripped as 192 kbps MP3s. I've added some of the album artwork to those, but have a long ways to go to get it all....I'd find it very helpful to be able to visually distinguish all the CD-R's I'm always swapping out in the car.

Let's see, artists.....

Hands down, the honors go to:

Depeche Mode: 64 songs, 4.9 hours, 403.5 MB
Nine Inch Nails: 55 songs, 4.2 hours, 356.9 MB

Runners-up:

The Cure, 42 songs (it would be more if I could put my tapes in iTunes)
They Might Be Giants, 37 songs (but I hardly ever listen to them, somehow....)
Evanescence, 34 songs (the bulk of these illegal, because you CAN'T buy them  )
Filter, 33 songs (but I only really like one of these albums)
Covenant, 32 songs
Tori Amos, 32 songs
Tool, 27 songs
System of a Down, 26 songs
Mary Prankster, 25 songs (local Maryland artist)
VNV Nation, 23 songs

And that's my iTunes....because you asked. :D

I just got my new iPod's and therefore worked hard in the last weeks to get all my music into my lib. Now I have
272 albums
3467 songs
2 songs from the music store. I have only a modem connection and it takes hours to download the music from the store. Next year I will get DSL.

95% legal. I bought most of the CDs.

With the iPod its really great. I love it two listen to random songs. I recognized that I don't know a lot of the songs from my CDs. And I am quite often surprized !

I'm currently at 10.4GB, 2612 songs, 6 days 18 hours.
my biggest artist is offspring, with 89 songs, and Greenday comes in a close second, with 85 songs. Kinda funny, since I don't really listen to either of those bands all that often... Oh well. And an embarrasing amount of the music is illegal, probably about 50%... Oh well, at least it's all from friends, rather than having downloaded it off the internet... *looks shamefaced*

1742 songs, 6.8 days, 12.92GB

556 artists, so its tough to figure out who I have the most of..but it looks like Chemical Brothers, Thievery Corporation or Jane Monheit. Maybe Lynyrd Skynyrd or Fatboy Slim.

Its about 10% of my CD collection. Mostly at mp3 192. New stuff goes in Apple Lossless. Less than 5% is from the store. The store is so weak. Probably 2-5% is from Fasttrack/Gnutella.
