I just bought a PC today - a fast Pentium 4 - that I assigned to run Folding@Home when I'm not using it, like my iMac does. My score's going to be increasing faster now.

That's great to hear. We need every processor, even fast ones.

Just added my PIII and my Cube (though I'm going to have to keep an eye on the Cube's temperature). Maybe I'll actually finish a WU within a couple of weeks. :D

I was getting the issue where Folding@Home was only using 50% of my CPU when I expected it to use 100%. Going into the BIOS and disabling Hyper-threading fixed the problem.

It's been said that by running two instances of fah on a HT machine, you'll gain 20-33% in your points production from that machine.

Just thought I'd let you know.

Please remember to watch heat-sensitive machines, so you don't end up with a problem.

It refuses to run two instances of Folding@Home. When I try to start another, it says it can't run and quits. Do I need to download a different client from the website (I've got the graphical client running)?

That is awesome Vlade, that should be a great help to the team. Will you have access to the G5 sometimes to take it for a spin? Will your Dad let you run it 24/7?

My dads old iMac runs 24/7 most of the time, so this one should be the same, he is always downloading stuff of Carracho or KDX, I would try to get him to stop but I can't pass up over 1000 points per week :). I will have access to the G5 this summer, I can't wait to test that thing out! It will probably convince me to buy a G5 instead of a powerbook :(.

Hmmm... I started my P4 2.4 on folding last Monday when I got it and it's done about 22 WU's so far. Dunno if that's good or bad but I suppose it's doing the best it can...

I tried installing F@H on my machine here at work. I downloaded the Windows binary and double clicked it to install it and it just quits. I can't even get the thing installed. Dunno if they've done something to my computer so I can't install it. It's a Win 2k machine. Oh well. My iBook doesn't fold. It's too busy sleeping (plus I hate running the fan on it all the time).

It was originally one user in Portugal with a couple of machines. Then, sometime last year, a few of them got together as a sub-team.

Even though, every contribution counts--not just the large ones.

I guess those weekend backups aren't worth it, unless something happens to your machine and you lose your data. Be safe. The points will come.

Finally got my P4 2.0 @work folding. Couldn't get it to work at first because of the firewall blocking the assignment servers... Know I have formatted my G3, put first classic on it, then os X and also installed virtual pc. Know I get the WU's through virtual pc, email the workfolder and the queue.dat file to my pc@work and that is crunching 24/7!! I know, it's a bit of work, but got my first Stinker and that is a 249 pointer! So probably this will give me at least about 50 points per day more.

Yep, ask a systemadministrator to open the firewall for the assignment and upload servers! :D First I wanna see if it has problems sending the results to Stanford. I that goes without any problems, I'll ask the IT department to open the assignment servers in the firewall. When I asked about it they said that they didn't have any problem for people to use their pc for folding, but they also didn't want to inspect it any further why I couldn't get through the firewall. Know, with some help from the board here, I know the firewall has blocked the addresses of the assignment servers. Probably the addresses to send in the results are also blocked. I know more after the weekend.

I finished my first WU (a gromacs) about 1.5 weeks ago. I am still working on my second one (a tinker). I would say my beige g3 is chopping through these things pretty well. it is taking me just a little over an hour to get .25% (1 frame) of it done. Im just about a 50% right now...hoping to get it all done pretty soon :).

Theoretically i could get it done in 17 days...but it will probly be more like 20-24.

At least the beige g3's....which have cruddy hardware parts (you can tell it was made when the migration from oldworld to newworld roms was going on)...has excellent cooling. My 500 mhz sonnet g3 proc in it is doing pretty well...actually i just opened it up and touched the heatsink and it is not "burning" hot which is a good thing :). pretty soon i am getting an emac however. Have any of you guys experienced any problems with emacs and the constant 100% cpu power? Last thing i need is an overheating proccessor causing the vaccume tube to explode

After just under a week (think I started on Tuesday of last week) I have gotten to 3 WU and a score of 305 on a PC P4-2.2 that doesn't see much action any more.

Now for a question or two (maybe more). I have my partners (Teddy) PC that sits idle; can I add it using the same name that I am currently using? And is there any limit to the number of computers that I can have under my name?

The other question is about folding with my PB 12" rev. B. My operating temp (by Konfaulator Temperature Text) is generally about 125 to 130 degrees. I do plan on getting Applecare, so I expect to get at least three years out of the PB, though I would hope that I can see a total of 5 years. I would love to run the PB at night. Will I be doing more harm to my PB running it 24/7?

Also with my PB, how are points done when you start and stop? For if I do run overnight it will be for 5 to 8 hours. And not always, since I run DVD burns just before hitting bed. For what I was thinking was to run the stand alone folding program when I could.

Thanks for bearing with me. Glad to finally be part of the team.

Yes you can use his pc under your own name, you can add as much computers as you like under your own name! Don't forget to add every pc you got at work!

The other question is about folding with my PB 12" rev. B. My operating temp (by Konfaulator Temperature Text) is generally about 125 to 130 degrees. Folding on a laptop isn't recommended, because of heat problems. A laptop can't get rid of its heat as easy as a desktop. To keep a laptop cool there are special platform that let air go under it.

Also with my PB, how are points done when you start and stop? For if I do run overnight it will be for 5 to 8 hours. And not always, since I run DVD burns just before hitting bed. For what I was thinking was to run the stand alone folding program when I could.
There is no problem here. Just finish a WU within the timeframe (mostly this is more then 20-30 days. Have you thought about the folding app of mc68k on your PB (in the FAQ section there is a link to it)? This will fold when only on idle cpu time. So it will be folding day and night, but only when the cpu isn't used for the full 100%. Next to that you can make it so that only (let's say) 50%, or any number, of your cpu idle power is for folding (if you get heat problems, lower the cpu intensity used for folding)

Thanks for bearing with me. Glad to finally be part of the team.
You're welcome and glad to have you!!

yes but i have only done 2. I am getting credit for a wu i never did...wtf?

Last night around 1:30 in the morning my p639 was at 98.75%, so i went to bed and woke up at 11:30 pm to find that finished and my next one has started and is at 2%. The p639 finished at around 5 in the morning...i really doubt i finished another wu in just a few hours. Especially since this one is at 3% and it is 12:40 here...it takes roughly 60 mins to do 1%....

So based upon that the p739 must have finished around 10:00 this mroning. For some wierd reason i find it really difficult to beleive my beige g3 did a wu in about 5 hours...i looked at the stats for it and i knowfor a fact it could not have finished it. In my log i saw no evidence that i completed a p739 either...i know i should not be complaining but this is just really really wierd!

Oh well maybe it did finsih it and there was a fart in the folding@home program...i know sometimes it does not record your status on a specific Wu...just a little program fart i guess....oh well

I finally got my second machine up to OS X and folding, well kinda. We are in the process of migrating our Desktop publishing dept. to OS X and today I finally got "InCrease" successfully installed and working on it's first WU. Then reality hit and I had to boot into OS 9 to finish our production for the day. I wanted to reboot back to OS X and let it go for the weekend but I had to leave early and didn't get a chance to do so. When I got home today I found out that my last WU put me up into the top 500 on the MacRumors team :D :D I'm now crunching a 206 point GROMAC that should really put me up there ;) ;)

What ever it takes, just KEEP ON FOLDING!!!
