I don't know why I can't find this, but if I jailbreak my 3GS with purplera1n what happens to saved app data? Will it still be there? If not, can I get i back into the phone and keep the jailbreak?

After you jailbreak, all your saved games, texts, etc are still there.

I don't know how backups work after you jailbreak, so I am watching this thread (http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=751996) for info on that.

OK, thanks. I thought so, but couldn't really find a definitive answer.

Yes, with Purplera1n everything stays the same.
It just adds the freeze icon to install cydia. No need for restore.

Can you do the jailbreak using redsnow without a restore?

The tutorial above suggests you need ot do a restore.

The reason that guide is telling you to restore is because with the 3GS you need to get two files that are created during a dfu restore and save those files to use for future jailbreaks. If you have a 2G or a 3G you can just use redsnow and you don't have to restore first. You can jailbreak the 3GS without restoring first but its recommended that you restore to get the two files you'll need in the future.

So could i do a restore, save those files to be used later then using the backup go back to my normal state with all my app data, sms messages etc

At this point i would then bright where i started so i could then do the jailbreak without the restore process?

is that right?

Just make sure you backup the phone before you start the restore and you have to do a dfu restore. I restored a few days ago and I didn't lose any of my app settings. You lose the settings of your jailbroken apps but not your app store apps.

Thank you very much for your help. my plan is.

- Upgrade to 3.0.1
- Get a backup and make sure i have a copy of it in case it is overwritten at any point.
- Restore the phone to 3.0.1 so i can capture the files needed for future jailbreaks
- Restore all my apps and settings using the backup taken previously.
- Jailbreak without doing a restore using redsnow.

Does that sound right?

You don't have to save the backup file since iTunes saves more than one but if you want to do that it couldn't hurt. When you use redsnow and it asks for the firmware use the 3.0 firmware not the 3.0.1 firmware.

Thank you.

Out of interest, if I take a backup of the phone whilst it has been jailbroken. Then remove the jailbreak by restoring, would i be able to use the backup to restore my non jailbreak apps, settings etc? or will it not work because it was a backup of a jailbroken phone?

Im trying to think ahead for example when 3.1 comes out.

My process then would be.

- take backup of phone
- restore to 3.0.1 (removing jailbreak)
- restore my settings taken from the backup which was taken whilst jailbroken i.e. up to date
- upgrade to 3.1

It doesn't matter if the backup is from a jailbroken or non jailbroken iphone.
