i have a 9 year old HP psc 500 all in one printer.
does the imac have the connection for this type of printer? i think it's called DVI? or would i need to buy an adapter.

I looked up the printer on HP's website. It uses IEEE 1284C, not DVI. DVI is for digital video output.
you could try buying a cable online that takes the IEEE 1284 connection from the printer and makes it into a USB end for the iMac. I haven't tried this one but here is one you could look into.http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812156005
The one thing that I dont know though is if it will still allow you to scan documents, or if it will only allow you to print.

Just as a side note, a 9 year old printer may not last too much longer. You may want to consider buying a new printer (under $100) rather than pumping money in the form of cables into this one. Just a suggestion, but you probably could still get this old printer to function with the right cable.
