RSSPush - first RSS reader with PUSH??

I have used a lot of RSS readers including manifesto, byline and feeds. What I have been waiting for is for an rss reader to have PUSH. RSSPush is the first one I can see, that has just been released. Anyone got this yet?

I haven't tried it yet. As i say I have bought quite a lot of RSS reader apps that work well and finally settled with using feeds. So a bit reluctant to purchase another that has push just for that fact alone. Would like to hear other peoples experience with the app as an rss reader before I do. Anyone??

I don't think it can do that yet.

But what it does do, is allow you to enter key words.

And it only feeds you and pushes you articles with those key words in it.

This might just work VERY well for those that don't want every article from their feeds pushed to their phones.

It works pretty well and the developers site says this is a 1.0 release to just get it out in people hands and that the next version will allow adding your own feeds and such.

I bought the App and it's excellent. It does two things:

1. Push feeds that contain a certain keyword. This is great if you just want to be kept up-to-date on certain topics only. For instance I set-up keywords such as "iPhone 3.1" and "Snow Leopard" and it informs me regularly what the position is on these two topics. It's better than subscribing to an entire RSS feed from a website because I'm not interested in other articles being released by that particular website.

2. You can subscribe to ALL feeds from a particular website by using the "." (period). This pushes all articles released by that site.

The only limitation is that you can subscribe to a selection of feeds only and not add your own, but the selection they have is quite comprehensive with some of the largest news sites.

Plus, quote from website:

"Updated to add: In the interim if you need a feed added to the service, please hit the contact us link at the top of the screen and send us the feed url. We will review the content and add it to our servers."

You first enter a keyword and then you're presented with a large list of subscriptions, you select the subscriptions you want the app to pull feeds based on your keywords. The subscriptions can be from any website. For instance, I selected "iPhone" as my keyword and chose several sites including "TUAW" and "BBC News". When news items contain the keyword "iPhone", it's pushed to your phone. All other news from that particular website is bypassed unless you use the "." keyword then it'll push any and all articles from that website.

Indeed - it is a great app for people who want to draw from many RSS feeds but have a hard time starting out. it is hard sometimes to start out and nice that the devs got into this. got a review of it here (http://www.touchmyapps.com/2009/07/29/rsspush-in-review-feed-your-feed-read-need/).

One thing that is lacking is being able to edit or see the details of each subscription once it is in place. For example, if you set up two "." subscriptions to two different websites, there's no way to tell which is which, in the list.

2. "." from TUAW will result in showing all articles from TUAW regardless of keywords.

The only two limitations that I can think of are:

Just took a look and all 3 reviews for this app are 1 star. The common thread is that no one seems to be getting any pushed messages. The program doesn't seem to be working. Anyone who has bought this program got it working?

Well, I haven't received any PUSH updates in about 4 hours.

I've got it set to push all RSS from TUAW. Haven't received anything from that. I also had it setup for keyword 'Jeff Gordon' (testing the NASCAR and Yahoo! servers) and the program was sending every RSS post (like from their Home Page RSS) and nothing from NASCAR. Deleted that keyword feed. Also have it set to send one from a website that does a daily post. We'll see if it works when it usually happens in the morning.

Pretty disappointing so far. The app has lots of potential.

That's one of the limitations I noticed. There is a delay between the time the content provider publishes the articles and the time you receive the article. So far I understand that RSSPUSH servers act like a conduit, they pull data and after a set time, they push that data out. It's not true PUSH but it works.

I have mine set up to pull feeds from MacRumors, MLB News and a few others and I get updated with in a minute or so of the articles being posted. I have had zero issues

It is nice to see you guys like the app. Version 1.1 is almost complete and includes, amongst other new features, the ability for users to define their own feed adresses. The 1.1 build should be sent to :apple:Apple before the end of the week for approval.

There really needs to be a way to completely see what you are subscribing to, or how the feeds that you've defined already are set up. If you've got a lot of '.' (or send all) feeds setup, then there's no way to determine which feed is what. That is confusing to me, as it seems I'm doing it somewhat blind. Maybe that's part of 1.1 that's coming out?

Also, this app seems to use the voicemail routine to setup the alert on the lockscreen push. Because everytime that a PUSH notice is received, my custom WinterBoard sound setting plays the sound for voicemail, and then Reminder keeps the chosen repeat for voicemail going, until I confirm the push receipt.

Wow. Being put in the spotlight....Can I wait to see v1.1 (supposedly submitted to Apple soon) to answer that? :)

Honestly, I'm a RSS 'newbie' if you will. Learning. I've always gotten my information that I'm interested in via a LOT of bookmarked sites. I visit them daily/hourly, both via my desktop and my iPhone. I was trying to get 'in the know' faster for some of the things I'm interested in with learning RSS a bit better and using the app to help....

So, to answer the question. I don't at all regret the purchase, and I'm still using it. It's working for me now, for all that I've subscribed to. It could use some 'polish', from this RSS newbie's perspective. I mentioned above my configuration confusion :D

I've posted this in another thread....$3-4 apps I don't mind trying and evaluating all day long. I do 2-4 a week. I'd rather do this than give the $ to Starbucks (I make better coffee anyway)...... If I like the app, it's stays on the iPhone and I review it. If I don't like an app, I just delete it. Some of those get rated, some don't. Honest ratings, no bent or spiteful bashing (so I don't necessarily agree with the ratings of this App on the App Store). And, if an app that I like gets used at least weekly, then it gets a a spot on Springboard. I have about 65 apps in iTunes, and about 50 taking up screen space on my iPhone. I've deleted maybe 15 apps completely.

I'm hopeful with v1.1, and being able to enter my own feeds. Definitely will help. A little polish on the user interface, being able to enter my own feeds, and it'll get pretty satisfactory ratings.

Hopefully the rambling makes a bit of sense.

Good point on v1.1. I have purchased a number of applications, so I am with you on that point. Right now I have over 260 apps (includes bought and free). This includes a number of RSS Readers. I am always looking for something better, but am getting tired of all the clutter that I now have. Been trying to rein in the growth rate of my app purchases. Part of the issue is that, without support for folders, the iphone doesn't handle a large number of apps well. While you can search for an app name, sometimes I forget their names and have to go through page by page. Too slow. My phone is not jailbroken.

WARNING: I had a massive eruption of ideas, so my post is not structured at all.

I’m not even considering this application as a news tool. To me it’s like Growl for Mac, you can do a lot more with notifications if you know what you’re doing. This application has some incredible potential or at least could give way to some lateral thinking. So far, just of the bat, I have several ideas that I could rapidly implement just by using RSS as a data output. If the developers add support for adding individual feed subscription there is so much that can be done with just that alone. For instance I work in the Legal/marketing domain and I can think of several corporate technologies that already work with RSS such as internal websites, project management systems, enterprise systems etc that push out feeds from their system. This can be used to get up-to-the minute info or status updates. You can quite easily incorporate it with a lot of technologies that have workflow editors and output to RSS.

Just as I am typing this, I’ve already thought of another idea that I could rapidly implement. I have a simple shell script that runs as a CRON job on my Ubuntu server that downloads the 5 day weather forecast, pipes it through some commands to clean it up and outputs the display in XML (it was designed to work with Beryl the fork of Compiz with real-time weather, but I could change it) once the XML is captured, it’s pushed as RSS for weather updates or condition updates. For instance, if I had an outdoor event 3 days later, and I wanted to be updated about weather change from ‘Sunny’ to ‘Rain’ I could simply enter the keywords ‘Rain’ in RSSPUSH and the date three days ahead. The CRON jobs run at regular intervals, the server downloads the 5 day forecast from the BBC, some data manipulation is carried out on the server-side to push the weather as a feed if it met my condition. This way I could get on with my week knowing that I would be updated by the hour (when CRON jobs run) if there was a weather change, so I don’t need to check the weather all the time and can plan ahead. This is a really simple use, but if you can capture data, you can easily manipulate it to output as RSS feeds.

I’ve also just realised that a lot of PHP project management systems can easily be tweaked to output data as RSS, so Tasks, Milestones, deliverables etc etc, can be pushed by the server as a feed for up to date information.

There is so many other things you can do with this app providing we are able to add subscriptions and while considering the lack of security RSS has, it can still be used to keep you up to date with other things such as Facebook notifications, Email notifications, server problems, if you know some coding then anything that you can do a lot with this.

If the developers do this right, and turn it into a ‘Growl’ like application I can quite easily see web apps being built to take advantage of this. Think of Netvibes, publishing and pushing all your content, weather, news, email etc. There are so many other ways you can hack things to work with this app.

There is so much you can do with this app... This app could save the universe.

Was just checking in on v1.1 of this app and found the info below on their website. Based on the info there, v1.1 was sent for review late on 8/10/09.

RSS is a standard icon provided royalty free. Any RSS based application or website uses the same icons (some have a little extra flavor or jazz though). Some denote the icon by an orange background and some denote it by a blue background. They basically mean the same thing though.

As to spell checking, if there are errors, feel free to email me directly at info at znetdevelopment dot com. I am actually unaware of any, so I would be very interested so that I can resolve accordingly.
