Apple vs. Microsoft

Three Microsoft engineers and three Apple employees are traveling by train to a computer conference. At the station, the three Microsoft engineers each buy tickets and watch as the three Apple employees buy only a single ticket.

"How are three people going to travel on only one ticket?" asks a Microsoft engineer.

"Watch and you'll see," answers the Apple employee.

They all board the train. The Microsoft engineers take their respective seats, but all three Apple employees cram into a restroom and close the door behind them. Shortly after the train has departed, the conductor comes around collecting tickets. He knocks on the restroom door and says, "Ticket, please."

The door opens just a crack and a single arm emerges with a ticket in hand. The conductor takes the ticket and moves on. The Microsoft engineers saw this and agreed it was quite a clever idea. So after the conference, the Microsoft engineers decide to do the same on the return trip and save some money.

When they get to the station, they buy a single ticket for the return trip. To their astonishment, the Apple employees don't buy any ticket, at all.

"How are you going to travel without a ticket?" asks one perplexed Microsoft engineer. "Watch and you'll see," answers an Apple employee. When they board the train the three Microsoft engineers cram into a restroom and the three Apple employees cram into another one nearby. The train departs.

Shortly afterward, one of the Apple employees leaves his restroom and walks over to the restroom where the Microsoft engineers are hiding. He knocks on the door and says, "Ticket, please..."

I've always like that car image, but thought the PC shoould be a complicated and broken down vintage car instead. :)

There's also a pile of 62 "Mac vs PC" images, comic strips, and YouTube videos at LaptopLogic.com (http://laptoplogic.com/resources/mac-vs-pc-images).

There are of course some trying to prove that the PC is better, but we all know those are lying so I won't bother posting them. :)

A Mac is only Wall-E in the sense that it is still going and useful decades later. Whereas after only four years the Windows PC would be the rotting and rusting junk that Wall-E is cleaning up. :)

[snip]

My iMac setup;
http://satansam.co.uk/ftp/IMG_2177.jpg
Midi keyboard, much needed 7 port USB hub, 360 controller, card reader, 2x external HDD's, keyboard and mouse (that is too powerful to run off the useless keyboards USB ports), DVI and USB for external monitor, audio out to EQ and amp and speakers, iPod dock, LAN, spare USB for docking PSP and others, graphics tablet, EyeTV for DTT.

Oh a look at the back?
http://satansam.co.uk/ftp/IMG_2179.jpg

And not to forget the time I needed a new HDD. The whole system was useless for a few days whilst it was in repair. Something I could have done myself in a few minutes on a "cheap" PC. Oh and I need a new graphics card because this one is from 2005, but I cant just buy a cheap £50 card oooh no. I need a whole new system.

Yes I've fallen out of love with Apple :D. They make great laptops but I'm keeping well away from their desktop models.

Jul 31, 2009, 09:35 AM
Its easy to get in a wirey mess, but i think if u did a bit of 'wire management' and moved some of ur xbox wires etc. to underneath your desk it wouldn't be as bad. As for the graphics card and repairs you have a fair point.

Maybe u should just have done with it and buy a PC. lol

Dagless
Jul 31, 2009, 09:59 AM
I've been trying to do wire management for years, it's impossible because my setup changes often. Sometimes I need quick access to cables, some of them are hidden though. The speaker wires (which are never touched) run under the desk but everything that you see there needs quick access.

Forgot to mention the other iPod (shuffle) dock and the iPod dock's s-video out to the monitor. Infact I think the only free video-in port on my monitor is composite :D.
And yes my next machine here will be a desktop PC, which will be a fraction of the cost of an iMac and outperform it, and probably give a mid-range Mac Pro a good run for its money.

All I can see on the Dell website for $1300 is a single ATI 4350. Will that still beat the baseline iMac? Yes, but that doesn't change the fact that I can still play whatever the hell that is on it. The original picture doesn't specify anything about FPS, AA, resolution etc.

Corrected.

(and I am typing this on an iMac that looks exactly like the one in the pic.)
There is no iMac available that costs $4000. And if the only game you can play on your new iMac is some weird 2D mushroom, mario like game, then you have major problems with your GPU (although I'd bet my life that the weird 2D mushroom mario like game is way more fun than some lame first person shooter).

Well that would be true if it was applied to a poor FPS game, but not a fun one like in the example picture. Compared to a lame Mario clone (only Nintendo can do good Mario titles), I know what I'd be playing.

... The ever addictive Left4Dead :D.

A Dell XPS 630 with a Quad 9400 and Dual ATI Radeon 4850/512, and a 20" monitor (entry iMac has 20" monitor) is $1320. (And one could do much better with a DIY, but since the pic is Dell...)

Will that still beat the baseline iMac?
Haha! Not just "beat" it, but thrash it brutally and take it's lunch money every day.

Trying to argue that an iMac is an equal gaming platform to a PC, or is spec for spec cheaper than a PC, is beyond hopeless, but cheers to you for attempting it. :D

First of all, circling the 'shared' memory on the Dell is stupid, the 9400m in the MB uses shared memory. Secondly, this pic is a bit old, but you can compare it to the 13" XPS, for the same price you get a faster CPU, double the memory, 3x HD space and 7200rpm vs 5400, and also a faster graphics chip w/ dedicated memory. That's a pretty lame attempt at a comparison.
