Sat Nav useless on Iphone

So, took a trip to blackpool yesterday using Navigon. Plugged it in to the cigarette lighter at 98%. Got to blackpool at 68%. What's that all about? Is the power usage more than the charger can take? If so, thats totally useless for long journeys!!!

If so, thats totally usage for long journeys!!!We went on a 2400 mile driving holiday using Navigon on the iPhone and never noticed this, it was always kept topped up. Maybe your charger doesn't provide enough power?

It's just the original USB cable plugged in to a USB adapter! My iPhone is jailbroken mind, but I dont have anything installed apart from Cydia at the moment so I can't see that being the problem. Bluetooth is off, brightness is at 3/4. May be turning wifi and 3g off will make a difference but that seems to be a bit overkill each time I want to use the navigation software!

Does the charging symbol appear when it's plugged in to the charger?

Maybe your USB adapter doesn't supply enough current. I drove from Glasgow to Portsmouth and spent a week driving about France without this happening. I have a Griffin Power Jolt for iPhone.

Pretty sure it's not your cable, but your charger. What charger are you using?

What kind of iPhone?

Saturday night, I ran my 3G phone with Navigon for eight hours and the battery stayed at 100%. The phone was plugged into a Griffin Power Jolt that I bought with my very first 2G iPhone.

Wait, did the Sat Nav end up taking you to Brighton or something? Why say it's useless, why not say 'Sat Nav is a battery drain'?

Calling something useless is very emotive and in these circumstances, is the wrong title for this thread!

Anyway, it sounds like your charger isn't drawing enough current to charge the phone.

Your thread title is both wrong and misleading.

Navigon is brilliant for the iPhone. YOU are have power supply problems in your car. While navigation take ~0.5-0.75% per minute use in my car when not plugged in, I have no problems when plugged into the car.

I have one of these Belkin Tunebase FMs that plugs into a socket in my car. I originally bought it for my iPod Classic before I got a stereo with an iPod connector built in. It works and charges my iPhone perfectly. I just get a popup saying the accessory is not made to work with the iPhone.

I figured since my Power Jolt charges both my iPod Classic and any model iPhone, the above Belkin Tunebase would also work with my iPhone since it works with my iPod. This is what I am using now as a mount when I use my GPS on the iPhone.

Well for me the Sat Nav function on my iPhone is useless because it drains the battery when on charge in my car! Jzzzz some people are so anal!

Admit it - you made a gross-overgeneralization in titling your thread. If I were a newbie reading titles, I might thinkk the overall the iPhone is "useless" for sat nav. The opposite is true. YOU have power (and thread title-ing) problems.

Sorry, but your thread title is misleading. This is a personal issue with a power adapter not providing adequate power and not a fault of the phone itself.

Hi All :) just a newbies 2p worth on the subject.

I made my first iPhone - Sat Nav trip, not to Blackpool but to near by Lytham.
This has placed me firmly in the camp of happy navigators, the combination behaved impeccably both out and back to Northamptonshire.
On the outward trip I was ahead of schedule and decided to pull off the motorway and head across country to see how well it would function where I could not offer any 'local' knowledge input. The response to the change was extremely quick and the new route unfolded almost instantly the trip was still completed ahead of schedule.
Frankly I could not expect any more if it were from a top ranking dedicated Sat Nav, with the added bonus that I do not have to carry an extra 'gizmo brick'.

Regarding the apparent lack of charging, my vehicle layout is obviously something similar to that of ajnicho in that the Cigarette Lighter socket is positioned low down. The Charger Cable runs from the Centre Console over the steering shroud to the iPhone mounted on a Griffin Window Seat support which is fixed to a small window between the windscreen and drivers door.
The issue I had with this was that the central portion of the Charger Cable is formed into a coiled spring, which is great for controlling the cable from flapping about but it does exert considerable pull on the Charger plugged into the Cigarette Lighter socket.
I found it necessary to reseat the Plug on several occasions during the round trip. Regardless of this the iPhone Battery remained fully topped up over the whole journey. Carefully 'persuading' the coil to extend slightly should cure the problem, although I am investigating re-routing the cable behind the fascias and/or repositioning the iPhone near the centre of the dashboard.

Whatever the iPhone as a Sat Nav is here to stay :cool:

The BIG thing is if your charger outputs 500ma or 1A. Mine outputs 1A and have no problems keeping it at 100% even after playing a game for 2 hours (while plugged in of course):D
