Something buggy about version 8.2.1 iTunes. At first it started to automatically disconnect from my iPod classic. Today, it doesn't pick up my 3.0 iPhone. The iPhone still charges through the USB but I am unable to make iPhone adjustments, like adding or deleting music and video files, updating calendar and address book.
I believe others are having problems with this buggy release. Is Apple aware of the problem?

I'm not currently experiencing any problems with my iPhone. Perhaps try turning off your iPhone and plugging it into the computer to start it up. If not, downgrade to itunes 8.2, the 8.2.1 update is in my opinion unnecessary for us iPhone users atm as it adds no critical software/stability fixes or features. It's merely to get back at Palm.

:D Connecting directly to the iMac did solve the problem.
I had connected to the iMac through a USB hub. When I connected the iPhone and iPod Classic directly to the iMac itself, itunes recognized the devices. Oddly, it did not detect them on the more modern USB cable that came with the iPhone 3.0, but with an older, larger cable that came with the iPod Classic. Go figure.
The recent software update for the iPhone, supposedly to fix an issue with texting, has returned both iPhone and iPod to their former state and I am able again to connect through a hub (after a couple of iMac restarts -- what else is new!)
