I would actually use these features, but knowing that I would get my MacBook back with a wiped hard drive If I ever have to send it in for repairs, makes me think it would just be a big hassle. Unless there was a way to back up all the info to a thumb drive or CD for later reinstall.
Is this possible, and for free?

All of the data for the applications are store under: user->library
Just copying the mail folder, iCal folder, etc... But, having a back-up of your entire computer is generally a good idea.

I believe this is only possible with MobileMe.
Just thought: Give Time Machine a go if you have an external HD - but I don't think Time Machine works.
Edit: Looks like I'm wrong (above post)

Simple task. All three of those apps have export functions that will export all data to one file.

D'oh! Thank you. I've only been using a Mac for 4 years. I still have much to learn. :-)

You can use Time Machine to browse through old Mail Messages and old Address Book contacts however I'm not sure about iCal. I KNOW you can with Mail and Address book, It works just as well as it does in the finder.
