Ack! My iPod "menu" button doesn't work!

I've had my (2gen) iPod set on "play by artist" for a few days (charging), then suddenly when I try to go back to "menu" it doesn't respond. It will play, skip forward and back, and turn off and on, and turn backlight off and on, but it will not go back to menu. This has never happened before, I've had it for nearly a year.
Any clues???

well, if you can turn your backlight on/off, it means the menu button itself is functioning... have you tried resetting your iPod? (hold menu & play until you see the apple logo.)
