There's magnets in the sub? *Moves it*

I would move the sub away from your Mac mini, as the magnets in your sub don't go well with the hardrive in the mini. Leave around 1 metre distance :)
no, the creature IIs have a magnetically shielded sub - meaning no worries about keeping it on your desk, i thought?

From random info I found on them (JBL site doesn't work too well on Safari)
"Both speakers and the subwoofer are magnetically shielded to provide the greatest protection against image distortion on a computer monitor."
I hope this is the case *Has a bit of a sweat on*
Edit - Also says the same on amazon.com, though nothing on the Apple site

nice! how do you like it? oh, and hey, how's the finish on it? like a black macbook? looks kinda to be the same matte finish, but I wasn't sure.
Don't know about the MacBook, but I really like the iPod. Very robust.

My new Mac Pro setup. 2 x 24" flat panels with a nice 30" in sandwiched in between. LOVE!

wow, just wow, it a dream setup, I want to do something simular, love to have 3 monitors. I stuck with 32bit core duo. my wife say If i loose:
7lbs I can buy sims2
20lbs bose cinemate speakers
30lbs a new rifle
and 40 lbs a Mac Pro or new 24inch iMac, the time i reach 40lbs I am hoping for 8core (wipes drool from month and floor).

yea, there's magnets, but don't bother moving it. the whole magnets will mess up your hd thing is a myth. The magnets inside the hard drive are way more powerful than that little sub, there's no way at any distance it could adversely affect it; to say nothing of the fact that since that's a computer sound system; it's shielded anyways.

It´s great when working in Final Cut, you have the original layout on the mainscreen, a full image on the screen to the right of the mainscreen.
On the far left you have the audiobins and on the right you have the videobins.
Would love to have a setup like that now, dual 30" is not enough (wow that sounded pretty weird to say.)

How much did that cost you?
$11,000?
I do web development, so I get large chunks on money at a time, but all this was pieced together over time. I had the 20" Dell monitor when it first came out, at the time was $560. Then I bought another 20" Dell monitor when I saw it for $400, I thought I was the coolest. Then I broke down and bought the Dell 30" LCD for $1560 on ebay, shipped. Then I bought the MacBookPro with 2 GB ram (my first mac), but then the MacPro came out, cheaper and twice as fast and it supported more monitors, so I sold the MacPro like a month after I got it for $1000+a 30" Apple Display. thats why I have 1 Dell 30" and 1 Apple 30". Id prefer the Dell, I like them much better than the Apple display. The apple display tilts forward and back, thats it. And the cord is really lame (if your using it to plug into a laptop), all the cables are wrapped into 1 cord, then they give you like 5 inches to plug in everything at the end. Which mean if your plugging it into a Laptop, the power brick needs to rest on your desk instead of the floor... AND it has a BRICK... the Dell doesnt. The dell tilts the same way the Apple does but in addition to that, it raises and lowers vertically, and swivels left to right. And it has a Card read built into the side of the monitor. And I can mount a sound bar under the dell monitor. And its cheaper. And the image burn is less on the dell than on the apple.
Im planning on Selling the Apple display on ebay and getting another dell, all i want to sell it for is $1600 so i can get the dell one.
The mac pro was 2499 with student discount and the 2 video cards. Ram was 200 for 1GB, and 500 gb hd's are 200.
4 displays?
and WINDOWS????
Well, I grew up on Windows, and I think im sticking with it. To be honest, OS X is quite slow. The programs I use for web development on a daily basis is HomeSite, Paint Shop Pro, and SecureFX. I can replace SecureFX with Transmit on the Mac, but PSP and HomeSite just are irreplaceable to me. I tried switching to Photoshop and Dreamweaver, but it is SOOOOO slow on the Mac, probably because it uses Rosetta to run. I know dreamweaver and photoshop just as well as homesite and psp, but the speed is what counts.
The whole reason I even bought a mac is cause I have an HD video camera, and editing in Final Cut Pro in HDV is amazing, blows the PC away!!!!!
I also have a nice Dell Laptop i used to use on a regular basis, but Im not one to have multiple computers, i need all my data to be in the same place at the same time, and Im not a fan of external hard drives, too slow for me. Im all about response time.

My kind of man you and i think alike 90% of the time when it comes to tech. I do like OSX and switched mainly cos i was bored of windows. OSX is just a little slow compared to XP and requires more resources. Also not a fan of external HDD, extra load and slower.
Also contemplating a Dell display over an ACD.....just more function over form to an ACD at least for my usage.

Pretty easy to use once you get used to it. LOL Here's a shot of the layout from Kinesis:
http://www.kinesis-ergo.com/images/layout_contour-mac-usb.gif
It's not ergonomic in just shape (like the M$ and Adesso ones) but in key placement too. On other keyboards, keys like return and backspace are on the right side so you really have to stretch with your pinky (your weakest finger) to get to them.
With the kinesis, the backspace key is right near the left thumb and the return key is near your right thumb. So you don't have to stretch to reach them and your hands never leave the home keys, so it helps with typing speed too.
It does take some practice, when I first got it, I kept hitting the ' key because I had been trained in my keyboarding class that that was where the return key was. Took me about 3 days to get fully acclimated with the layout. Once you do, your typing speed actually goes up.

Yeah it's awkward at first, when I first got it, I thought the... y key I think it was was broken. I kept hitting it with what I thought was a sufficient amount of force but I was hitting it at the wrong angle or something. As I got used to it, it got easier and I never had that problem again.

All dells allow a sound bar to be attached. but if you notice, I have a audio cable hooked up to my nano. I dont like running itunes on my computer cause i need to resources for all my other crap, so I hook up my nano to my other speakers. There is a sub on the floor that the external hard drive sits on and there is 3 speakers behind the left monitor. but I cant turn up the volume too loud or i get complaints in this Apartment im in. I used to have it hooked up to my stereo (shown with the plasma) with surround sound when I had my own house, but I sold the house when I got divroced :(

My new 17" Core 2 Duo iMac, sitting next to the MacBook (although the MB is just on my desk for the sake of the picture).
The iMac is the entry level one with 512Mb and GMA but I don't play that many games and I will try and bump the RAM up next week. It's replacing an old 1.25Ghz Mac mini which I finally got fed up of when it was taking 3 minutes to load iTunes 7 with my music library! It's sitting, without a display, keyboard and mouse, connected to my router so I can get files off it.
I was going to get another Mini but then I thought for a bit more cash, I could get an iMac so here we are! It didn't come with the Apple Remote, but the one that is stuck to the iMac is from my MacBook - at last somewhere where I won't lose it!!!
Sorry for the bad picture, cameraphone.

Well guys, I finally did it today: I went and bought an iMac. In the last two weeks, I sold off three old PC workstations and one of my three LCDs (the other two are still up for sale), and so today I drove nearly an hour to the Keystone Apple Store in Indianapolis and purchase (with student discount) a stock 20" Core 2 Duo iMac.
This isn't really cleaned up/set up the way I will have it eventually, but I was excited to get my new toy up and running:
http://rogersmj.com/images/workstations/2006.09mac/1_thumb.jpg (http://rogersmj.com/images/workstations/2006.09mac/1.jpg)
I was very tempted to splurge on 2GB of RAM right away, but with the stratospherically high memory prices I thought I'd see how 1GB would do. It's doing perfectly fine for right now, so I'll probably wait a bit for a good sale on RAM. Also, as soon as I sell that 19" Dell LCD in the picture I'm buying a 2007wfp to match the screen in my iMac.
I am astonished at the brightness and vibrance of the screen. This morning, my Dell 1901fp looked perfectly fine and bright. Next to my new iMac, it looks like a piece of crap.
I'm still getting used to everything. I'm still sort of a klutz with the mouse, since it tracks differently than in Windows. As you can see from the picture, I quickly ditched the Mighty Mouse -- to me, the only thing corded mice are good for is to strangle yourself. I have an MX1000 bluetooth that I easily paired up. I haven't yet been able to get the side buttons to do back/forward in Firefox though. I also hacked the Home/End keys to go to the beginning/end of a line of text -- oh man if those don't work, I would kill something when I program.
I have mounted my 900GB video library from my file server and placed aliases inside my Movies folder so everything shows up in Front Row -- which is very nice. I just need to figure out how to set up automatic (as in, on boot) hard mount points for my SMB shares -- I don't want the volumes floating around on my desktop.
All in all, it's been a fun evening. As a 15-year Windows user, I have a heck of a lot to learn here. MacRumors keeps me going!

honestly you sound like your jealous of other people's money, but seeing as you seem to be living off student loan I guess it's easy to judge those with money. Come back in a few years when your working and let's open your bank book and see where your paycheques are going.
yeah, I agree, no body needs 4 PC's or 2 iPods. But if thats how they choose to spend the money they earn that's their business.
Wow, I never knew that's how you spelled "paychecks" in the UK. That's pretty neat.

Actually I'm just up north in Canada. But being a british colony our spelling is based on the UK spelling. We also spell them: colour, humour, rumour (Occasionally I type in MR's addy wrong), neighbour etc.
I'm sure there's other examples besides the "our" thing, but I that's the most common difference I notice between Canadian/American spelling.

Or is your area only been occupied by british very recently?

No, but from what I see a lot, I don't feel the need to spend the majority of my student loan on 4 pcs.
Why does anyone need 4 pcs? The amount of money in the world...it's sick, what a selfish world we live in, pfft.
The others are right that it is none of your business what is spent and I'm not sure that everyone here is even old enough to worry about student loans so how could they be spending that money on computers?

First, the word is you're. Second, I'm going to defend student loans here simply because you imply that one who needs student loans could possibly be in a position to be jealous of another with money. I have money, I earn a great living and my parents are in a tax bracket that you couldn't even fathom, and yet, I have student loans. It is in fact a decision I made. The status of said loans is not something I'd mention here, but I can say that I have them and I have never found myself to be jealous of those with what appears to be a nicer "setup" than me. I simply have what I need/want and that basically covers it. Moreover, those with student loans spending all of this money on their machines are only cheating themselves when they will either fall short one semester and go nuts or find out that in 4 years they must pay that back with interest usually.
While I think MonkeyHugger is entirely out of line implying that we're selfish, I think you're out of line implying that he would be jealous because he has student loans. In my opinion I find myself envious of people's education and never envious of people's possessions. That's just me, what they know is what I want, not what they have.
My defense of such loans is simply because those very loans grant people a chance to learn. We live in a world where the cost of education is out of control. People bitch about gas prices, look at the cost of education...it only gets higher as the years go by. By the time my would-be children see college they'll probably need loans too. It's not what I want for them, but the alternative is to try to go through life without a degree and that is career suicide in my opinion. I'd rather have one computer, one monitor, and two degrees than 2 monitors, 2 computers and no degree.

I'm not bashing student loans at all, but MonkeyHugger was the one who brought them up, and he seemed quite bitter about them and how some people are using them.
My only point is that it is very easy to judge those with money when your living on less than you'd like. But attacking how other people choose to spend their money (be it from a job or a loan) is out of line. Some people choose to buy nice computers, others choose to give it all to charity, but unless your in the later it's really just a case of the pot calling the kettle black.

Well yes & no, Canada is only about 140 years old I think (too lazy to look up the actual number). We are our own sovereign country and such, and the british monarch has no "real" power, just symbolic powers now. IE the Governor General (the queens representative here) has to sign off on all laws and such. And our money has the queen on it and our official government vows and such are "to her majesty".
Basically Canada never rejected the british monarch in the way the USA did, although I personally think it's time we did.

Had a good look through some of the pages. I have to say, some take their desktops or office workstations rather, a little too seriously. But nonetheless impressive.
BTW, if anyone can answer. Why is it that, judging by most of the pictures here, one has a laptop as well as a iMac, for example? Is one for mobility and the other for home?

Typically, desktops are more powerful then laptops (iMac/ Mac Pro vs. MacBook). If you need lots of power and portability, even the current 2.16ghz MacBook Pro might not be enough power for some of the things that people do on there computers. Therefore, a small laptop is nice to have for on the go and an iMac/Mac Pro is great for home/work when you are actually going to be working on a major project and you need the extra screen space and power.

Yeah, right now I have a 2Ghz Macbook w/ 1.25GB of RAM. It is perfectly fine for the things I do now; web browsing, email, itunes, some small games, and light photoshop and indesign work. Once I graduate from highschool (in the spring), I'll probably get myself an iMac (or *maybe*/*hopefully* a MacPro) as a more powerful desktop solution to get me through college. I plan on majoring in journalism and getting a minor in graphic design or possibly 3D animation (depending on where I attend).

Wow, interesting thread.
Pictures will follow -- right now I rearranged my den to house my new Mac Pro so it's a disaster area. I'll take pics when it's finished. Let me describe my current setup:
Main work area:
Mac Pro 3.0 GHz Quad
Dell Dimension XPS5 (Windows Media Center 2005)
Gateway P4 2.5 GHz (Fedora Core 5)
MacBook Pro
Thinkpad X60
Around the house:
Thinkpad X41 (XP -- Media Server and download mule)
Mac Mini (G4) -- my wife's surfing computer
HP Pavillion 3.2 GHz P4 laptop -- Media Center on my 50" DLP TV in living room
HP 3.0 GHz P4 -- Home Theater PC on my 61" DLP TV in media room
Compaq 1GHz P3 -- MAME PC with arcade joystick and rotated 21" CRT
Now, my abridged complete computer history (some ommitted and some collected after their prime are omitted) -- only ones I seriously used are listed. In order, * = still have it:
Atari 600XL *
Atari 800 *
Atari 130XE *
Atari 520ST *
IBM PC XT clone (4.77/8 MHz 8086, DOS 3.2, still have the DOS box)
IBM PS/2 Model 70 (16/20 MHz 80386) *
Gateway 486/66
??? Pentium 133 MHz
Home-made dual Pentium II 266 MHz
Dell Pentium III 800 MHz
Home made Pentium 4 1.2 GHz
I left some out and didn't mention laptops, or the current lineup. And I'm sure I'm forgetting a few :) I generally get the upgrade itch when power doubles -- roughly 18-36 months.

I think that desk is one of those Ikea table tops that you can pick and match with table legs. If so, i'd assume the block of wood came from something else as it doesn't come with the table : ) possibly came with something else from Ikea too??
very nicely done :)
looks like a chopping board.

To everyone that responded, thanks for the compliments on the setup.
The desk is from IKEA, as is the "block". The "block" is from a coffee table that is the same finish as the desk. The desk cost $110 CDN, and the coffee table top $20 CDN. It doesn't put the MBP at eye level, but still a nice little attractive looking boost.
The IKEA mouse pad, I bought 20 of them. For $1 something a piece I can afford to chuck it when they get too dirty from my wrists.

Yeah, I also noticed. I couldn't justify spending around £60 on a mouse, however nice. I have a £20 Wired IntelliMouse from Microshaft and its the best mouse ive ever owned, had it about 3 years now... Think its time for a wireless one tho.

They are good.
My boss had them on his desk - and left them behind when he moved to another company.
I claimed them as my own, took em home, and am very haappy with them.
Except, i don't like the volume control. It adds far too many wires to the setup.

The MX1000 I'm using came with the MX5000 keyboard/mouse desktop set I got for Christmas last year, which at the time cost around $120. I probably wouldn't have spent that much, but man is the MX1000 great, and you can get it a lot cheaper now. The MX1000 that comes with that set is bluetooth, unlike the one you buy separately which is RF, meaning you have to plug something else into your Mac's USB. It tracks perfectly, and all those extra buttons come in handy. My favorite extra button is the round one in between the thumb forward and backward buttons -- I use that for Expose.
I cannot use a wired mouse. Absolutely cannot. After about two minutes, I want to use the cord to strangle myself.

Great minds think alike!
i'm using the round button for expose as well.
Only issue i have is that the two buttons above/below the scroll wheel don't work. I'm using SteerMouse as the driver. All other buttons work beautifully :)

Thats a fair point. I would like a BTMM, but I cant spend £50 on a mouse, and it lacks the buttons I need. This has 2 extra, plus the scroll wheel clicks down as well, which is handy, but these all get used for Expose/Dashboard. I am going to get myself a wireless mouse 2mora tho. Been saving for a while, and I just totted it up and ive saved nearly £400 in the last week, lol, (Including £250 for my old eMac, but still) so it's upgrade time I thinks.

So a brief update:
Dumped my MBP about 5 months ago and decided to wait for the C2D revision as mine started having issues. In the meantime i reverted to my trusty PowerBook.
My Dell display also arrived today and i can't help but adore it. Would i prefer Apple aesthetics...yes but this has more ports and function and especially height adjustability which is an absolute must for me and its a whopping £170+ cheaper. Also on the plus side it matches my iPod & PSP. Anyway here goes:

You know, you don't have to leave the PowerBook slightly ajar inorder to use the external monitor. You can close the computer completely and it will work just as well and won't harm anything. Once it closes, just tap a button on the keyboard or the mouse and it will come back on.

lol. I know but i saw a picture on flickr recently, the Tibook's keyboard keys were melting and imprinting on the screen. I know chances of this happening are very slim but what can i say, the picture gave me the creeps.
So i leave the PB slightly ajar so there is some airflow as i regualarly push it to the limit.

Those are Altec Lansing FX6021's. They sound great and look fantastic but are kind of pricey. I got the HK sound sticks which look pretty good also and are significantly less expensive.
