So a brief update:
Dumped my MBP about 5 months ago and decided to wait for the C2D revision as mine started having issues. In the meantime i reverted to my trusty PowerBook.
My Dell display also arrived today and i can't help but adore it. Would i prefer Apple aesthetics...yes but this has more ports and function and especially height adjustability which is an absolute must for me and its a whopping £170+ cheaper. Also on the plus side it matches my iPod & PSP. Anyway here goes:

I am not sure if anyone has posted shots of the 24" iMac yet, but I took some quick ones at our demos today and thought I would share for everyone.
In our downtime, we would watch trailers through Front Row - woah... nice. People across the room would tell us to not stand in front of the iMac so they could watch, too.
Really, the screen is just that big. And beautiful.

Why do you use the double cord for your iPod? The 5G's can only be sync'd through USB and charge just fine through it too. I'm just curious if you have another reason I can't think of.

Its a Microsoft Mouse designed by Phillip Starck. I got mine from Selfridges (UK) but if you google it you should find a retailer. Some people dont like the mouse but i absolutely love it and have been using for the past 3 years. I got it when i got my first ever mac (a 12" PB). So some sentimental value there.

I use that chord because its a longer chord I used to have for a previous ipod. The one that came with the 5g iPod I use as my travel chord for my powerbook.
Incidentally the dual wire thing is USB and Firewire. And obviously Firewire is no good for the current iPods.

In most cases, yes. If the app is universal, then yes. The only programs I use that aren't universal are photoshop and illustrator, but they are fast enough to not be an issue at all.
Ripping and encoding a dvd with handbrake used to take a few hours on my dual 1.8ghz g5 tower. Takes 40 minutes on the macbook pro.

thanks. ive no time to be pretentious just to post up aa pic of my desk area.
and look, ive got cables all over the place!!!
the arm is dope. no other way to describe it. up down left right. facing the other direction so i can watch the office while i sleep. it rules. plus it goes low enough so that the top of the monitor is level with my eyes and that's a huge benefit for me. it locks my heavy as a turd 30" in place no matter what position it's in. setup is a 2 man job though. trying to swing that arm around with one arm and wrestle the monitor at once is a bit trying. good thing ive been eatting my spinach
the hifi is good, but too pricey. i got optical cable coming from the mp to the hifi and it does the job. classical and electronic sounds great. songs with low exaggerated bass distort or clip. vocals get muddy sometimes too when i listen to blues.
if i ever had to pinch pennies, i'd sleep with my head on the side near the exhaust of the casing, and cancel heating company.
vohdoun, it's not the copperhead. it's the little brother diamondback. works like a charm. im a closet fps gamer and this here is my best friend.

It's been a long time coming, but finally....the year-old G5 iMac has a space of its own (no more perching on the dining table, no more sharing a crowded workstation) and the 30" ACD reigns supreme over its own space, a separate workstation, with the brand-new Mac Pro snuggled up on the floor nearby....
Thought I'd better take photos quick before I manage to clutter up both workstations! Neither will ever look THIS clean again! :D

Somehow over the past year as I kept shooting more and more photographs, especially after I started shooting RAW, the hard drive space kept disappearing....so I needed a backup for the iMac itself and another drive for just images and another for iTunes and images.... when I knew I would be getting a Mac Pro I got a 500 GB drive in preparation; the machine has two internal drives and then I'll use the external LaCie for backup.
Yeah, I also realized that I'd better plunk out some money for APC UPS power supply/backups.....got one on the iMac and printer and LaCies, then have a more powerful one connected to the MP, 30" ACD and LaCies..... one is plugged into one outlet and the other is in another outlet down the wall.
Heh, with the amount of heat generated by these babies I won't need to have my furnace on too much this winter! LOL!!!
I am really excited and pleased with my setup: it's been a very long time in coming! Needless to say, didn't get everything at once: it's been a matter of adding one thing at a time over weeks and months....

Got both at Staples, and they're made by Z-Line. I saw them in the local store first, and then ordered each of them online at different times. The larger one is the Z-Line Matrix Compact Desk, Item #473068, Model #31745 ($199.99) and the smaller one is the Z-Line Expo Glass Desk, Model #SP4052-1D (I have misplaced the sales slip but I believe it is around $75.00). I was tempted to order a second Z-Line Matrix (larger desk) instead of the smaller one, but reason prevailed and I knew I was limited on space. The iMac is very happy on the smaller desk! Each desk is constructed to allow an extra shelf/monitor stand rising above the main part, but in both cases I did not want that; IMHO the desks are more functional without it. The larger of the two has a glass keyboard shelf, while the smaller one has a metal keyboard shelf.
The larger desk is 48" wide and the smaller one is 33.5" wide. I really love them -- they provide plenty of work space and they're elegant and functional.
I got the larger one back in mid-June and then after I ordered my Mac Pro and knew I'd need additional work space, I went ahead with getting the smaller one. I think they're both going to work out just fine!

I'm assuming you mean the lamp on the large workstation? Got that at Home Depot. I was tickled as the shape complements the legs of the two workstations. It is a halogen lamp and puts out an amazing amount of light for such a little lamp. It was around $30.00 and I had to buy the special halogen bulb separately. I've already tossed out the box so don't remember the brand name now. The other lamp, the brass one at the far end, is a table lamp that I've had for many years. Hope that helps!

Thanks, Vohdoun! When I bought this condo apartment I had the hardwood floor put in the living room/dining room areas before I moved in. Only problem is that the woman who lives below me can hear when I'm walking around or wheeling my chair on the uncarpeted part so I do have to be considerate of her and not go banging around a lot at night.
Dark, I LOVE the Mac Pro!!!! I still love my G5 rev B iMac, too, but oooh, that Mac Pro runs circles around it! I bought the MP for the exact reasons you mention: I was running out of HD space, even with using external HDs, and I also wanted a bit more power and "oompth" in terms of Ghz, graphics card and RAM. The iMac's 2 GB RAM are fine for most things but I definitely notice the difference in the new machine with its 8 GB. Shooting in RAW was just eating up HD space like crazy. Now I've got two internal 500 GB HDs plus an external 500 GB HD, so that should work out pretty well. When I need them and have the money to do so, I'll add two more internal HDs to the Mac Pro,but this will suit me well for the next few months at least. For the time being I'm still using the iMac for basic internet stuff, email, etc., freeing up the Mac Pro for primarily digital imaging projects. The iMac is only a year old and working perfectly fine so I'm not banishing it to a corner somewhere! I love it too much for that.
On the Mac Pro, Aperture really flies, and since I use Aperture most of the time for my images, this makes me VERY happy!
Dark
Oct 6, 2006, 07:25 PM
Holy Crap I diddnt realize the MacPro was so loaded! Man I would really love one but unfortunately, im only 16. I have a Job but nothing extravagant. Its tough considering I payed for mostly all of my camera gear. I was contemplating getting a MacBook for Christmas that I would use for primarily photography, but if they dont get the chip upgrade then forget it.
Clix Pix
Oct 6, 2006, 07:54 PM
The nice thing about the Mac Pro is that people can configure it to pretty much whatever it is they want/need/can afford. I was fortunate enough to be able to load mine up, but one can still get a really nice machine when buying the stock one right at the store and then adding stuff later as funds become available and the need more apparent.
As for a MacBook, yes, it would be a good idea to wait until the new Intel chip is in it, but also you might want to check out whether or not it might be more advantageous to go with a MacBook Pro because of the dedicated graphics card....
The advantage of the Mac Pro over either notebook or the iMac is the upgradeability....so one starts out with the stock configuration -- still pretty frisky! -- and then as time goes on and funds permit, adds what is needed in terms of RAM or another internal HD or whatever. A lot of people are buying the stock Mac Pro and then getting RAM from third-party vendors at less cost or getting HDs elsewhere and installing them.... The Mac Pro is very flexible and upgradeable, but even at absolute base level is pretty darned good.

So a slight update. I moved the PowerBook to the bottom of the desk as it was cluttering up the desk and made the whole setup look somewhat ugly. Now things are somewhat cleaner and there's air to breathe.
I'd still prefer a dedicated desktop macine though, instead of disconnecting and reconnecting every time i want to be mobile. Might get a mini to play that role when those go C2D.

I am ready with photographic evidence to prove just how insane I am (a realization I came to while taking these pictures). In my defense I am a software engineer (at least that's the excuse I tell my wife).
Desktops: Windows (XP & Vista), Mac (OSX & XP), Linux (Fedora Core 5)
http://img144.imageshack.us/img144/4561/desktop1bz4.jpg
http://img81.imageshack.us/img81/338/desktop2ti5.jpg
Laptops: Both active duty, although I do have a laptop from work (Dell) so I don't use them as much as before.
http://img81.imageshack.us/img81/8504/laptopsey4.jpg
Gadgets: I spend about 15 hours a week commuting so I have lots of audio toys. From top left -- normal PSP, hacked white PSP with hard disk, Motorola Razr, 3rd gen iPod (classical/jazz music), 4th gen iPod (will hold my lossless collection), 5th gen black (videos/movies), 80 gig 5.5 gen white (will hold my full rock collection), Nano (holds the latest entries because my 60g 4th gen was so stuffed I have zero room left, means deleting something to add something else), Sirius Stilletto.
http://img156.imageshack.us/img156/7057/gadgetsrw0.jpg
Media Server: UPnP server, file sharing server, download mule.

G4 Mac Mini: My wife's surfing machine in the kitchen
http://img156.imageshack.us/img156/6564/macminizx9.jpg
Media Center in the living room: Didn't need it until I started downloading a lot of shows from the internet (Top Gear, Doctor Who, Battlestar Galacitca) and the Digital Media Adapters I used couldn't keep up with all the formats.
http://img144.imageshack.us/img144/493/mceje9.jpg
Home Theater PC (and 360/PS2): Now I have to cross my fingers for a PC-based HD-DVD/Blu-Ray solution.

Edit: Holy crap, I looked at the pictures again and am floored once more over.

Yes, I am a video editor. But, I have migrated into some really cool stuff. I also develop business applications for the MS world. Over the past couple years, I have been developing applications which use audiovisual media, incorporated with traditional data. I am also working to move Apple into the business mainstream with applications which leap-frog those currently available.
I use the 10 processors of the PM's/MP's for Qmaster/Compressor. But, I will also use all of them together for organizing my post-production flow.
I am often developing VB code on the Dell concurrently. It is attached to a database Server Cluster at work, which I am accessing through Citrix.
Actually, as I write this, I know I am going to get going sideways talking about it. Basically, I am using all of these machines for various reasons and functions. I use a couple machines (Mini & a Dell) to simulate network nodes to test my work. Most of these machines have some special configuration I can easily switch to.
The fact is, I am not done yet. I recently purchased, and am now configuring an HP Proliant BL-460c Server to move my SQL Server databases/Active Directory/Exchange Server local. I will also add an Apple XServe/Xraid when the Clovertowns arrive. The idea is to make your only creative limitation your imagination. It should not be constrained by your toolbox.

~Drools at the thought of 10 processors~ I really need a Core Duo Mac.

I have no idea what that is but it sounds very, very techincal, and I know technical stuff.

Good point. Apple do charge rather too much for extra RAM - so I thought I'd max it out in a year or so, or whenever I feel I need it.
Right now it seems extremely quick at everything - it boots in around 15 seconds from cold and makes the PowerBook feel generally slow at everything. Amazing machine.

Yeah honestly. No single person NEEDS that setup regardless of what they do.
OK, I may be a case of going overboard, but anyone who works with computers for a living, especially as a developer, will disagree. Let me shed some light.
A basic rule of unit and system testing is to not assume that because something runs on your development system that it works everywhere. Usually the developer's system has debug libraries that aren't present on a user's system.
Right now, I'm using my work laptop to have a 3-way conference call on Skype with my co-workers (working from home today) and access the corporate network via VPN. My desktop PC is capturing Ethereal traces of Samba copies with a NAS I am developing. My Mac is ripping CDs for my newly started lossless encoding efforts. My old Thinkpad is downloading torrents. Could I do all that with one machine? Maybe but it wouldn't be pretty. I often do things simultaneously that would bring a single normal computer, even my new Mac Pro, to its knees.
I like playing with different operating systems too. I suppose I could have one machine with XP, Vista, OSX, and Linux on it, but then I couldn't use them at the same time. I'm constantly doing things that tie up a single computer, so I need more than one. Whoops, I want to play Unreal Tournament, I guess I have to stop that transcoding of my 15,000 MP3s that takes a week to finish.
When I first started working with Linux, I got by with Virtual PC and Red Hat 9, so I still had good old XP behind the scenes when I needed it. But as good as Virtual PC is (was), it isn't exactly like a real PC. So I must have a full-blown Linux desktop available.
My laptops -- I got the X60 because my old Laptop was the HP Pavillion that is now my Media Center -- very powerful and with a gorgeous 17" screen. But after lugging that monstrosity to Germany, South Korea, and Japan twice in about a year of business travel, I had enough and went completely the opposite direction and got a 2.7 lb ultraportable. The MacBook Pro is a pure indulgence. I suppose I could have gotten by with running a hacked version of OSX86 on my Thinkpad.
The others? My wife has her own computer so she doesn't have to worry about messing anything up on mine. The old Thinkpad download mule? I don't want to leave my main system on 24/7 and be subject to lightning strikes while I'm not home. OK, the Media Center and HTPC are questionable, but a lot of my media is digital and PC-centric. I actually worked on Digital Media Adapters (DMAs) such as this, that play media streaming from a PC, but I've abandoned them because they just can't handle all the different file formats and types that a PC can, and a lot of my TV watching is now internet-centric. I was streaming audio in my house in 2001 and working on what Apple only now is trying with the iTV back in 2002.

The MAME PC is a pure indulgence. I always wanted a classic arcade cabinet, this is cheaper and more flexible.
Also, don't forget that machines that were once my desktop system get old and get replaced. Usually I give them to my wife for her business.
So, in conclusion, yes, I do need more than one PC. Maybe not as many as I do, but more than one. For you normal mortals who can get by with a single iMac, in a way I envy you. There was a time when my only computer was an Atari 600XL with a cassette recorder. Those were the days :)

Whats the matte underneath your keyboard and PB and Mice
The desk is quite soft wood, and kinda splinters too, so didn't want to be resting my hands on it - the matt is from Ikea - they also do a corner desk version if that suits you more. Thoroughly recommend them if you think you need one.

Yes as that's the part with the magnet in, which could potentially cause damage. Carry on as you are - it should be fine in which case.

BTW if anyone ever wants to test if speakers are shielded or not, find a CRT monitor or TV (anybody remember those?), and run the speaker along the top. You will see the colors warp and the image distort if the speakers are not shielded.

Yeah if you leave the magnet too long or get too close. It all depends on the strength of the magnet.

haha i know what u mean.....but tv's nowadays are pretty darn cheap. I got my 42inch sony for $1499 back in March and that was just a one day sale. The regular price was $1799. Now you can get the same tv for just around $1,000. You can even get 32inch lcd's for like $699 it's crazy....

Mac mini 1.66GHz core duo (rev B) stock
Eye TV Hybrid
500 GB USB2 external HD (behind the TV)
Harmon / Kardon sound sticks
101 wires!
Airport express for connecting machines to internet
Sony Ericsson K610i phone
All of the media centre is controlled via Remote Buddy which is a fantastic application for this purpose. If I wish to carry any maintenance out on the machine I use Chicken of the VNC to remotely connect.
All-in-all BRILLIANT

Subwoofers have very large, very strong magnets, and worse, they typically do not have ANY magnetic shielding. What exactly is the glass supposed to do, by the way? Didn't you ever put two magnets on either side of the glass and move one with the other as a kid?

I think he knows that the glass won't help anything. My guess is that he didn't initially understand the concern of the magnet, however I wouldn't worry about it much anyways. There is some amount of distance between them and if it hasn't damaged anything already, odds are it won't in the future. The magnet isn't getting stronger or anything…

OK, well I am an electronics engineer and as part of my job I design, yup you guessed it, speakers! So I do perfectly understand what the effects of magnets are on electronics. My comments about the glass was as a reply to the statement about the mini being on top of the glass, not on top of the speaker. As mentioned the gaussian effect from the speaker is an inverse square so at a distance of about 12" the effect frum the sub would be minial. Then you have to take into account all of the shielding around the mini and everything will be fine. Also the magnetic field is weaker in the horizontal axis at distance due to forces which wrap the field away from the magnet and back towards the oposite pole.

It's 2 years old this month and about the same speed as the old DP-1GHz PowerMac. But has a faster superdrive. Plus it much less imposing than the PowerMac and more portable.
I was going to upgrade the lappy before now. But I've decided I'll wait for round 2 of the Intel Laptops and Leopard to come along. ;)

It makes sense for me to also hold off until Adobe CS3 comes out with Intel native support.

Is that Mini on top of a subwoofer???
Two bad things going on there: magnet and vibrations.
the effect of magnets on a computer (hard drives specifically) have been GREATLY overstated. he'll probably win the lottery while being simultaneously struck by lightning before the mini's hard drive will fail from a magnet in a nearby speaker.

Will be updating the setup soon with a 20" Apple display for my PB and wireless keyboard. I'll put the PB under the desktop on the keyboard pull out shelf.;)
There's something still sexy about PBs.....even sexier than MBPs IMHO, i love my PB and just cant sell it despite many offers. In fact i use it more than my MBP and its the first mac i'm considering getting AppleCare for just to prolong it as much as possible. Long live the G4's

Are those headphones the Sennheiser EH150? If they are, a few questions. Do you like the sound? Have you compared lossless format to AAC? And do they block out any noise?

Those are the Sennheiser HD 212 pro, I have them. The Sound is pretty much alright, the bass is good, and you definitely feel a difference between AAC at let's say 256KBps and Lossless. It might be my ears, but I still think they bring out the difference. The left cable on mine broke, but If you get a good deal (under 40 bucks), and don't have too big ears, I can recommend them.
EDIT:
radiantm3, I LOVE your setup. It pays great restecp to the G4's design. A little too much clutter, but it's not like wireless was a real option back then, so I still love it.

If you think his setup was wicked, you should check out his site. radiantm3's site is incredible! I'm still on the fence about to cave for a 933Mhz/1Ghz G4 PowerMac but I know I should just wait to save enough for the Mac Pro.;)
@allexsimmons; The T68i (SonyEricsson)/m (Ericsson) was a farce. Sure many liked it but I couldnt stand it. It was the first ever colour screen phone. I prefered the T39m - STILL slimmer than RAZR's standards, better battery life (non colour screen though).

radiantm3's website is really well done. He does great work! I'm saving for a macpro as well. I'm gonna use my Core 2 Duo PC until after Leopard is released and then I may make the plunge. I will have all my credit cards well paid off by then too... which is always a good thing!

While most of us would say ditch the CRTs (none the less, Compaqs) and get shiny new LCDs, at least you have a Mac. Think of it that way.

Thanks for the comments. My old setup was very simple. I think it was the combination of the camera angle, warm lighting (the desklamp I used to have produced a really great warm light), and the beautiful G4 hardware. The new brushed aluminum looks great, but not as beautiful the previous hardware, IMO.

You can get them at some bigger electronic stores. The swing-arms are actually availabe in more places than the actual mounting arms.

You can get them at Staples Business Depot... but that might just be a Canadian store thing - http://www.staples.ca/
Any kind of business store supply store... they're sometimes called "Monitor Arms". I got mine used off a local buy & sell website in my city... $15 :)

$15? Wow! The only one's I can find online are $100+, most above $250.
I'm looking for one that mounts to a desktop and elevates a laptop so can I cam swivel it freely as well as use the desk space beneath is comfortably... and that is cheap. :)
Perhaps I should make a WTB thread in the Marketplace Forum.

You'll need to move those reference speakers closer together if you are doing audio production/mixing. If not your mixes are going to have stereo imaging problems.
