Haha, nice! Take a look at my network setup (http://rogersmj.com/tech/network), you'll see I use a similar naming scheme (my iMac is Galactica, the routers are named after Cylon ships, my laptop's a Viper, and I did have something named Pegasus but it went bye-bye...kind of like the Pegasus :D ). Only the best show to ever grace the screen. :)
Haha, yeah. :D My USB Flash drive is named Viper... I had something called Raider at some point... and I must've named my iPod Shuffle similarly, can't remember what though. Under Windows my workgroup name (not that I need to set one) is 12COLONIES.

Hey everyone :D, I just recently joined. Here's my past and present setup photos. I've had a varying amount of macs during my life, but these two machines were my dominant ones I kept on my desk (the others were either tucked away or rarely used). I really missed my old setup lol, it's just too nostalgic and the machine ran so well for 3+ years >_<;

Hows the glossy screen on the MBP, does it cause eye strain in any way?.

Also couldn't you find a way to hide the cables? and couldn't you spring for an ACD, nothing is wrong with Dell but it just doesn't look pretty on the wall...with cables. Still like the setup though, in all honesty, but think the ACDs look *prettier* when mounted. There i said it, bring on the hate mail...or reply in this case

The glossy screen is great, IMO. No eye strain at all.. but then again, I'm using the external about 70% of the time..

As far as cables and the Dell.. A computer has cables. That's just how it is.. I think I've managed them pretty darn well, and having two doesn't bother me in the least. The ACD would be "prettier", I guess, but I think the Dell is sexy, looks great on the wall, has more inputs, and was a much better buy. The ACD is a rip off. I wasn't about to pay $400 more for less.

I wall mounted to save space, mostly. You'd be surprised how much the desk opened up when I got rid of the stand.. that was also because I had space, finally, to put the laptop underneath the monitor.

Oh, and I wouldn't wall mount a 20" either. 24" and up only, really.. IMO, anyways. 20" is too small.. it would kind of get swallowed

Yeah, I still love mine. I think I'm going to get a new 30GB iPod this Christmas though for the simple reason that 6GB just isn't enough any more!

I wonder how much I could get for my Mini on eBay... it's in absolute mint condition with all the original packaging...

For goodness sake, why can't people understand that because of the worse (or shoddy) backlight and internal technology, the dell display are not as good, or accurate as the Apple Cinema display.

People just don't seem to get it. They also look horrible, but that is an opinion, the quality is not.

Uhm, no. Quite positive that the Dell looks gorgeous.. perfect backlighting, great colors... For what I do, I'd never notice the difference between the ACD and the Dell.

I'm quite sure that Apple fanboys would like to kid themselves into thinking that the Dell is inferior to their precious Apple displays, which justifies paying twice as much for it. But.. no. The 23" ACD's are notorious for the pink hue.. my Dell? Perfect.

Any color discrepancies would be corrected by a calibrator, anyways, for the professionals that *depend* on color accuracy.. regardless of whether they're using a dell or an ACD - so any "out of the box" color accuracy that the ACD might offer over the Dell is useless.

At any rate, this is not the thread to be arguing over monitors. There are plenty of other threads for you to defend your overpriced ACD. Go search.

What don't YOU get about it? You do know that the 2007WFP and the ACD 20" use the exact same panel (so do the 30" models) -- the picture looks identical. I know. I've seen them in use side by side. That makes your "accurate" argument sound pretty dumb. And as long as you don't get one of the early-revision 2007WFPs with the color banding problem (which I personally have never seen, but for which Dell will provide you a replacement), the Dell is definitely a better value. If you want to buy an ACD, that's cool, it's a nice looking monitor and it's your money. But stop being an elitist snob and knocking those of us who want more value and not just more looks.

I personally think Dell's monitors look really good anyway, especially the latest models. I don't know why some people think they're so horrible looking. Not Apple design, sure, but I think they're pretty slick.

finally someone with some sense!

I agree. I have the 2005FPW and it is great, I like it more that the 2007 version. I just hate it when people think because I have a mac I must be able to afford a ACD. I buy what I think is best value for money. I think a MBP is best value for money, I think the Dell is best value for money.

completely agree. I pay the premium for Apple computers because they run better, and OSX is about a million times nicer and more stable than the alternative. Macs are the best value, IMO. But I'm not going to blindly pay Apple the premium on their displays just because they match my computer the best. I'm sorry Apple and their faithfuls, but the ACD is not worth the extra premium. Perhaps if it was a matter of $100 or so, then paying the extra for the casing/looks is reasonable.. But it would have been $430 more for me to get the 23" ACD which has lower specs, less connectivity, and a shorter warranty. No thanks.

rickvanr
Nov 12, 2006, 09:35 PM
Not a fanboy, but I'm reasonably sure I read in one of the Apple vs. Dell monitor threads that for the 20 and 30 inch monitors they do indeed use the same panel, however in the case of the 30 inch, Dell will use the panels that other companies reject.

Comparing Apple and Dell monitors is like comparing Honda's and Acura's.

Thank god you stopped the whole Dell/Apple debacle. That what half of these recent posts are about!

I agree, the Dell monitors do look quite slick, better than some others. Their towers are also looking better than the standard black they used to always have.

I agree. I have the 2005FPW and it is great, I like it more that the 2007 version. I just hate it when people think because I have a mac I must be able to afford a ACD. I buy what I think is best value for money. I think a MBP is best value for money, I think the Dell is best value for money.
I think people associate Apple with rich people. I bought my NEC monitor because it was the best at the current time, and it does not match my iBook, or anything else really, whatsoever.

IKEA galant desk combination right in birch veneer / t legs.. was around $280.

Why is the desk so close to your bed and is your room small or something? I'm asking cause I have a cheap desk I got from Wal-Mart and I want something alot nicer but my room is small.

You do know that the 2007WFP and the ACD 20" use the exact same panel (so do the 30" models)

Yes, I do know this. I have used Dell's display offerings extensively in a professional environment.

That makes your "accurate" argument sound pretty dumb.

My argument is not dumb. What is dumb is that you don't recognise that it isn't just about the panel, It has a different coating, a different backlight and different internal technology.

I am a professional, I have dealt with monitors for many years as a profession, yet a few users on a forum call me dumb because a monitor that appears the same is cheaper.

But stop being an elitist snob and knocking those of us who want more value and not just more looks.

**** you. Who are you to call me an elitist snob? As I've explained, I am a pro user that has vast experience with Dell, Apple, Eizo and various other displays and I take exception to posters that are obviously talking crap saying that the Dell is much better than the ACD. It Isn't, I am not saying it is vastly worse either, but it is better and that is what justifies the price.

I personally think Dell's monitors look really good anyway, especially the latest models. I don't know why some people think they're so horrible looking. Not Apple design, sure, but I think they're pretty slick.

Personally, I don't give a crap about that. Design matters for about a minute when you are in a business environment with 20 of these displays.

I never said that the Dell display was not a good price for what you get, but you don't get a monitor hat is as good or better than the Apple. Argue all you want, 'talk sense' all you want, it doesn't make you right.

This is a little clipping from MacWorld magazine.

I think you aren't realising the problem here. The reason he is having a go at the Apple monitor is because Daneoni told the guy he should "spring" for an ACD merely because it looks prettier, and also the fact it has cables coming out of it (oh noes! something electrical has cables!).

Of course he's gonna take a pop at the ACD when some blithering idiot thinks money is no object and its worth $400 for the silver border round the screen.

To you the display is worth it because it is better quality when you are working in a pro environment. To the guy who posted his setup, does it look like he needs it?

If you read back, the problem I have is people saying that the Dell display is much better, which to anyone that knows anything (other than the ability to read specs and hearsay on forums) about monitors is incorrect.

Of course he's gonna take a pop at the ACD when some blithering idiot thinks money is no object and its worth $400 for the silver border round the screen.

1) who are you to say it isn't worth it? We pay thousands for clothes, furniture, televisions, cars et al, and people seem it is idiotic to pay extra for something that looks nice and is also a better display.

2) It isn't just the silver border (and that is underselling the encased aluminum housing, when you consider the squeaky black plastic crap that the Dell is made out of) it is a higher class of display.

3) I don't think you should presume that somebody is an idiot because they choose to purchase something which they prefer, just because it costs more. All the subtle differences make quite a difference.

To you the display is worth it because it is better quality when you are working in a pro environment. To the guy who posted his setup, does it look like he needs it?

I don't need a porsche, but I would buy one. I don't need to buy organic food, but I do. I don't need a Mac, but I own one. I don't need to....... You get the idea.

If he wants to pay extra for better design, better quality materials and better backlighting/internal technologies, then who are we to say different.

People might think that because I am backing Apple monitors that I think the Dells are rubbish (or at least that is what I am trying to promote) I do not. They are good monitors at a good price. This argument is reminiscent of PC users saying that windows is better and they cost less.

ahhhhh! Stop the war of Dell vs. ACD...!!

To each their own. It will depend on the user's needs and income as to whether the ACD is worth it. For me, the ACD is a rip off, and not at all worth its price tag compared to what else it out there. I'm a college kid on a college kid's budget, and not doing anything that would even come CLOSE to challenging the differences between the Dell display and Apple's.

But others might (will!) disagree, others might have needs that the ACD can only satisfy, others might follow Apple blindly, and others might just have so much money that they couldn't care less. Does it matter? No. You earn your money, I earn mine, and we all can choose what to do with it.

As long as everyone is happy with their own setup, that should be enough.

Alex, you are still missing the point entirely.

The guy got berated for wall mounting a Dell, based alone on it looking not as good as the Apple monitors (which is where the silver border comment came from), and also had a go because you could actually see cables. Of course he is gonna lash out because someone assumes money grows on trees.

Can the Dell vs. Apple monitor posts get split into their own thread? Its kind of annoying having to go through dozens of posts which don't have anything to do with the topic to find the lovely pictures and comments.

Its a valid discussion and I for one would be interested in the outcome, but please take it elsewhere for the sake of this thread. We wouldn't want it locked after all..

Why? So we should have a Dell-monitor only setup and a Apple-monitor only setup? That doesn't make sense. "Oh, you have to put this on THIS forum because APPLE monitors are SO much better!" "It sounds like you're discriminating against Dell-monitor users", etc, etc, etc.

Nah, if they want to have the Apple vs Dell monitor debate, they can go have it on their own forum. And there's plenty of advantages to owning a Dell monitor, (the main being the ability to play XBOX/360, PS2, Gamecube, etc)

There can be a general discussion thread about it somewhere else, but to raise the issue here is a bit pointless IMHO.

Hi benthewraith. I think you misread my post. I'm not implying that setups should be categorized by their monitor's brand.

What I am trying to say is that the posts pertaining to the argument over Dell and Apple monitors should be taken elsewhere because the argument isn't related to the topic. Like I said, its valid, but in the wrong place.

All setups = here

1. 2Ghz Macbook, 2 GB Ram
2. 20" ACD on wishbone mount
3. Apple wireless keyboard and mighty mouse
4. (Not Shown as is in drawer) 400 GB External
5. Klipsch ProMedia 2.1

There is a lot of cable management that has gone on to make this as neat as possible, as you can see the speaker controls are mounted under the desk, external drive is in a drawer with plenty of ventilation out the back, and of course getting rid of wires for the keyboard and mouse.

The arm is an Omnimount CL-S. It is a wonderful mount that you can get on eBay for about 1/3 of retail. If you look at the complete setup picture shown earlier the macbook sitting to the left of the ACD is powering it. The cord is long enough to pop out about 3 feet below (had to put the exit next to a power outlet so it does not look to out of place when the desk is removed) and get to the macbook.

It's called a kneeling chair. Your butt goes on the upper cushion, and you rest your shins against the lower cushion. It helps you maintain better posture because you're not relying on a backrest.

It's called a kneeling chair. Your butt goes on the upper cushion, and you rest your shins against the lower cushion. It helps you maintain better posture because you're not relying on a backrest.

Never heard of a kneeling chair before. Although I've seen the same chair many times in a message parlor accessory store. Also I've seen it here in Toronto's Canadian Naturopathic College for message studies. (sorry if I'm spelling message wrong)

Of course. I don't care much for the Mac Pro. a Mini would be fine, but it's more the ACD and the general looks of the setup. I have nothing to use a Mac Pro for.

This is a beautiful setup, i wouldn't mind sitting down on the floor, but without a big cushion then buttocks might hurt after a while. This setup wouldnt be ideal for a fulltime job.

BTW, how you hooking up both the laptop and MacPro to the ACD?

I used a recliner as my computer chair a few years ago. It was a cheap one, similar to this:

http://www.ueshop.com/productimages/C2937P.jpg

An overweight family member sat on it and broke it.

I use a nice leather executive chair now but I want to go back to a recliner soon.
I'm 6'3 and I weigh 350.
If I even looked at that chair wrong it would break.

Thanks & it's a light clipped on the stand of the iMac, I can't really move it any lower because as it is right now it's smushed against the wall and I like the distance of the iMac from me so I don't want to move it closer to move the light.

Sure, it's a Jobri brand kneeling chair. The one I have has pads that feature TEMPUR material (that memory-foam stuff) which makes it VERY comfortable. They also make one with a more traditional rolling-chair metal base (with hydraulic height adjust). The wood one w/ TEMPUR seems to run about $230 (how much I paid) just about everywhere online. The metal one is a bit cheaper. The non-TEMPUR versions of both are less expensive than the ones with, but I wouldn't consider one without. :)

100% correct. It's my wireless router and VoIP phone that it came with. Streams wireless to the MacBook and a 24"iMac in the lounge as well as my girlfriend's iBook.

The cube and the iMac G5 run off ethernet into the back of that hub. The aerials for EyeTV are hidden rather well as are many of the cables.

It's all hooked up to a huge AMP underneath my desk which in turn connects to two huge black speakers - the top of one being just to the left of the iMac, next to the LaCie drive.

There have been some other people who have done this. I think there are pictures in this thread. Also, check this: http://www.flickr.com/photos/simplesimon/sets/1747665/

It was actually pretty easy and much cheaper than buying a dock.

This looks like a home setup used for one person, so I have to ask, is there any point to owning 3 macs. Maybe 1 with the laptop but i'm wondering what you would do with 3 macs.

I'm guessing he upraded to a better machine because he needed it, and kept the Cube for simpler tasks. A media server maybe?

Very astute my friend. The cube is officially not useful for my work or my hobby of amateur photography, but I keep it as it's an amazing machine and also because I stuffed a 100GB 7200 RPM drive in there to act as a media hub. All my itunes is stored on there (and backed up daily), as are all my videos, movies and TV recordings (which are on a separate external).

The G5 was bought to replace the iBook G4 I used to use with the cube as I didn't need to be portable for work, but I did need more computing grunt by 2004 as the cube was showing it's age.

This year I bought the MacBook to enhance portablilty and to make use of Aperture and any other advantages of Intel Architecture. It also is my first mac with a remote bundled in (good for presentations).

I would like to add that my girlfriend has 2 macs (after only 1 month's worth of conversion!) and that personally, one cannot own too many macs. There's always uses. If someone gave me a mac mini I would find a use. If someone gave me .... ;)

Hi All,

Here's my desktop with its new addition, a 2nd hand MacMini. this way my laptop will no longer have to be a "desktop replacement"...

the mini was set up yesterday, today I decided to drill this hole for the cabling, this made a world of a difference.

Whats the phone thing with lights on it thing? And whats with all these cool cubes lately. You all are killing me. I keep thinking of getting one.

It's the BT Home Hub (http://digital-lifestyles.info/display_page.asp?section=distribution&id=3404) and I love it! Pretty good wifi and VoIP. And it's white.

Regarding the cube - buy one! They're amazing machines. Look so cool - but they feel a little slow now. You can speed them up a fair bit though.
