Here it is! Our iMac G5, my iBook, and then our entire "computer room", including the dismantled clamshell hanging on the wall. (A work in progress, I'm sure you'll notice ;) )

pardon my stupidity but how can you make a larger photo (500 kb) smaller to get it under 100kb?

that's no stupid question... the stupid thing would be to post the 500kb image anyway...
your best bet is to open the image in preview. go to file --> export. format: JPEG, then under options, select a "target size" or a quality setting...
happy compressing,

Yeh, here is my corner. PB 12" at the right of the screen, Matrox external 250 GB on the left. Logithech mouse and a not-showing iPod 3 gen. Big-ass Big Blue (IBM) 20" CRT. Heavy bastard!
Waiting for the G5 2x3Ghz. I'll place it ON my desk, left of the CRT :D

Yes it is. I just got it tonight and it's charging for the first time (the orange light is still on). I plugged it into the back of the monitor to hide it from the person for whom it's a surprise.
I thought plugging it into the back would be inconvenient, but really it's not. The shuffle fits perfectly fine there and doesn't touch the keyboard's USB plug. It seems like Apple designed it that way on purpose.
Plugging into the keyboard can be disadvantageous if whoever's using the computer likes to move the keyboard around. Plugging the shuffle into the back makes sense because the monitor isn't going anywhere.
I was thinking of a similar setup to replace my PCs and CRT. Thanks. :)
You're welcome. :)

Here's my current setup. The black keyboard and Wacom tablet are used to drive the 15" PowerBook. The white keyboard and red mouse are for the PC, although I hardly ever use it. Both computers are hooked up to the same monitor and I just switch between the two if needed.
I love the desk ($129 from Staples in the U.S.), and plan on eventually ditching the PC, rearranging things a bit and putting an M-Audio 61 key keyboard on the main desk area where the PC keyboard now sits.
On the right is "Lester", my Les Paul Classic guitar which I love (although it doesn't get enough attention these days).

I got them from www.movieposter.com and I got them framed on wood with a matte finish so they look really nice. They're pretty big too: 27" x 40"

hey guys, i got a quick question semi-related to this topic
Would I be wrong for throwing away a PC and a CRT Monitor?
Im going to reseat everything in it on monday, or maybe tomorrow. Its not working right now and is taking up valuable potential Mac Mini space. Or should i just try and fix/sell it?

They're Monsoon MM-700 (http://www.neoseeker.com/Articles/Hardware/Reviews/Monsoon_MM-700/index.html) speakers. That link is just to a review.. the company web site (http://www.monsoonpower.com/) doesn't seem to be working, so I'm not sure if they went out of business, or they're just having server issues.

People have been telling me to go wireless :). I've blown all my cash on gear but I have nowhere to put it all :(. My room used to be minimalistic you know . I need to go a big cleanup session - I need bigger desks too. I'm only 19 though and it's taken me a long time to work for the money I used to accumulate all this stuff. I'm currently building a surround sound set up; next is the matching centre speaker :).

Here it goes: Titanium PowerBook G4 1GHz/512MB/60GB/Airport/Combo, 23" Cinema Display, JBL Creatures, 4G iPod 20GB, Bluetooth Keyboard/Mouse w/Dongle on Powerbook, iSight, LaCie DVD+/-RW Dual-Layer Drive and USB Card Reader (hidden by Display is a Maxtor 250GB drive). Your picture shows the one reason why I am jealous of the Titanium PowerBook..... all the cables come from the back and can be hid behind the computer. I hate having my 12" PB on the desk and having all the cables come out the side and pulling it to rotate at times. The titanium makes for a very clean and classy desktop.

If you run your 12" PB lid-closed, you can have all the cables go out the back by just facing the optical drive slot towards the front of the desk.

You make a true statement about the cost of a G4 iBook but i almost got a iMac G5 but I didn't want a LCD screen and It would've been a waste of money for me to get a G5. However, I do love my eMac and do appreciate having a larger screen than the 12" iBook. I think the eMac looks better in person that in pictures, but it doesn't look that bad in pics.

I would never give up my eMac for anything else (maybe iMac G5 or PM G5). I mean it's nice having a laptop sometimes. I've actually been thinking of getting rid of my HP laptop and buying a used or refurb iBook G3 or G4. When I do go on trips I like using my laptop but I would like it to be Mac OS X based.

Hey man, i have a similar problem being 19 and having limited deskspace. here's what i did to resolve part of the issue. I own and "L" shaped desk and put my 27" TV in the corner of the "L". I have right now my powerbook to the left of the TV and my PC to the right, w/ the CRT up on a built in shelf. I don't have the printer or the projector, but my xbox is up on one of the shelves to the left of the TV. I just bought an iCurve to alleviate some of the problem, because i don't have all that much space to do my homework. Also, and this is pretty much a key role in my space solution, I added 3 milk crates to the left of the desk and a filing cabinet to the right where im going put the mac mini and a printer. In the Milk Crates i have my blank CDs and headphones and things like that. When the iCurve gets here next week i'll be posting pics to let you know what im talking about so be on the lookout and good luck.

Only one mac as it stands now... I'm just a university student and I've only had it for 3 months so I am definitely not bored of it yet! I'm so happy I made the switch to Apple. Unfortuneately I still have a PC kicking around but I'm sure it will eventually be replaced by a desktop mac (hopefully some sort of power macMini if Apple does actually make one)... Only one mac as it stands now... I'm just a university student and I've only had it for 3 months so I am definitely not bored of it yet! I'm so happy I made the switch to Apple. Yeah sorry, just something for the picture... to see if anyone picked up on it (or even cared) I didn't think people would be too offended by it ;) Hopefully I won't be the shunned member of the forums now ... But you're right, the Bliss background is pretty cool, irregardless of the $-hitty company it's attached to.

Not sure who's glass desk you're admiring... but mine is a Studio RTA Jupiter Computer Cart (http://www.studiorta.com/catalog/details.cfm?catalog_id=182) that I found at Office Max about 2 years ago. You can find it here (http://www.cjhomeandoffice.com/s60040.html) here for $101.00.

I do a little bit of everything freelance. I started doing video post-production using Commotion for a TV show on the Disney channel ("The Book of Pooh") a few years ago. I recently did some work on a stop-motion animation for another TV show using After Effects, I make DVD's using Final Cut Pro and DVD Studio Pro. I have also been doing desktop publishing with Quark for a number of years now and just started learning web design.
Oh yeah, I'm 25 years old and still live at home with Mom. That is why I can afford to spend every dime I make on my production setup. Once I get a professional video camera (soon to be released) I can officially start my production company and move away from home...

Yes, it is the 30"!
My recliner is rated for 30 hours of use at a time compared with like 5 hours for a typical office chair. When I want to watch a movie from bed all I have to do is push the 30" a little to the left since I have it mounted on the wall with a cantilever OmniMount and VESA adapter. Oh yeah, the keyboard sits on top edge of the Wacom tablet and the tablet sits on my lap. Very comfortable! I am very happy with my setup to say the least.

I just edited my post above to explain about that. The Wacom tablet is big enough to fit the keyboard on the top edge with enough room for the wireless mouse to move around (the mouse glides around nice and smoothly on the surface of the tablet) :). I then put the tablet on my lap. I only run into trouble when I use the pen on the tablet since the top of the desktop needs to be top of the tablet but the keyboard is in the way. I haven't been doing much Photoshop touch-up work or supercloning in Commotion so this hasn't really been an issue.

It's great to see what some people have at home with their amazing range of kit! I'm only a convert since 1999, so I reckon that I've got some catching up to do. Still, here goes -
Current kit consists of PowerMac G5/1.6 (OS X 10.3.8), 3Gb RAM wth 80Gb & 250Gb SATA drives, LaCie d2 Extreme 160Gb Firewire 800, LaCie d2 dual layer DVD-RW with LightScribe, Wacom A4 Intous pad, Nikon LS8000 film scanner and LaCie 21" Electron Blue monitor.
PowerMac G4/450 (OS X 10.3.8), 1.5Gb RAM wth DVD-RAM drive, 27Gb & 75Gb ATA drives, 2x LaCie d2 Extreme 120Gb Firewire 400 drives, LaCie 80Gb Firewire 400 drive, LaCie d2 52x CD-RW, Wacom A4 Intous pad, GigaBit ethernet card and LaCie 21" Electron Blue monitor.
PowerMac G3/400 (B&W) (OS X 10.3.8), 1Gb RAM wth 2x 40Gb & 1x 75Gb ATA drives, Sonnet dual ATA controller card, LaCie 80Gb Firewire 400 drive, LaCie 24x CD-RW, Wacom A4 Intuos pad, GigaBit ethernet card and LaCie 19" Electron Blue monitor.
PowerMac G3/300 (Beige - ugh!) (OS 9.2.2), 512Mb RAM wth 2x 40Gb ATA drives and LaCie 19" Electron Blue monitor.
PowerBook G4/867 12" (Aluminium) (OS X 10.3.8), 1.12Gb RAM wth 40Gb ATA drive, BlueTooth & Wacom Graphire3 pad.
iMac G3/600 (SE) (OS X 10.3.8), 1Gb RAM wth 40Gb ATA drive.
iPod Mini - lovely.
All linked with Cat6 ethernet running through GigaBit & 10/100 switches with linked ADSL modem/router.
Not much point in posting a picture as they all look like eveyone else's! They keep me off the streets although I'm looking to add a pair of dual G5's soon to keep me occupied!
Keep up the reports as I'm getting seriously worried about what some people sem to have as merely their "home" computers!

Can't remember where I got the desktop from it was originally 1600x1200 but i cut it and made it longer to fit 1920x1200. I'll put it up but only for a little bit (don't won't to use all my bandwidth allowance, so if you want it get it quick)

Oh man, that thing rules so hardcore. I have a wireless keyboard and mouse from logitech and a wireless network runnning on my desk... and when i play xbox there is no interferance what so ever. I was skeptical about that at first, but then i decided to suck it up and give it a whirl. Well I am so impressed that i will probably never discontinue my business with Logitech. The only drawback that i have experienced is that when i play Live i have to sit close to the TV... well, i do that anyway, but i'll be playin Halo and can't like jump back when i get excited or anything like that because the headset has to plug into the receiver... I'm thinkin about gettin the wireless head set to compliment it when i get ready to get up off my butt and go to the mall and buy one. Other than that... I LOVE IT!

I LOVE IT!
oh wow, man i really want one now haha...i have every system out right now, and only really want a wireless controller for my xbox. so its great to know the one to get.
i really need to take some pictures of my setup and get them in here...all in good time haha, thanks again h0eh :D !

Quadra 610
Quadra 660AV
Performa 630CD
Performa 6300
Power Mac 6500/225
Power Mac G3 Minitower 233
Power Computing PowerCenter Pro 240
Power Computing PowerTower Pro 250
G4 Cube 450
Titanium Powerbook 400 (I'm posting on this right now)
I'm only 20, so I don't remember anything before the SE/30 (which sits not 5 feet away from me now). Most are still functioning; my all time favorite of the whole lot is the PowerCenter Pro 240… it tore through OS 8 like nobody's business! I'm thinking about breaking the 1 ghz barrier soon though... I've got the necessary gaming power in my PC, so maybe a Mac Mini? They're just so beautiful....

You can sync an unlimited number of iPods i believe, but I think only one can be in iTunes at the time - like, eject one after your done and plug the other in.
Its good to have 2 ipods for some people - I'm not one of them, but for school I'm starting to need a USB flash drive so I may get a shuffle!

Well, I know that I just can't resist the 4th gen iPods anymore, and I'm going to be picking one up. I'll use it for music, and my old 20 gig will be used just as a backup/portable hard drive.
Some people probably just get more than one because they, like me, lust after anything and everything Apple puts out.

Just got my new 17" Powerbook today!
I've only got pics of opening it (and they've not been touched up yet) but I'm too busy using it now, lol.
I'm glad I went with the 17" instead of a 15" though, it's just the right size for me.
It seems as snappy as my iMac G5 so far, with the exception of hard drive intensive stuff. (booting takes 3x as long I'd say) The screen doesn't seem as good quality as the 20" on the iMac... like it's got a lower refresh or something. 25ms maybe? Either way it's fine for what I'll be using it for though.
There are a couple of (tiny) marks on the lid, but it's otherwise a perfect machine, so I can live with it. I didn't get an iLife '05 disc, so I'll be calling about that. (but I've got to contact them to get my extra 512mb stick of RAM sent out.

A couple of things here make me believe the caption on this photo is a joke.
- Fortran was never supposed to be "easy to use" - why would I want to program math problems in my home anyway?
- Why 2004?!
Still - amusing, though!

I think its a joke or fake as well [caption], but indent number 2, why 2004, is answered because they said this is '1954' so 50 years later would be '2004' which makes sense...

heh heh. well, come over to my place and have a look for yourself.
1 stuck-on pixel on my 1.25GHz AlBook. but that was one of the first AlBooks produced, i'm glad i don't have those white spots (although it does look like i've got a few small ones, nothing too serious). i think the stuck-on pixel has been there from the start, but it's no big deal - 1 pixel out of how many thousand? and it's near the edge of the screen.
and my bro has a stuck-on pixel on his PC lappy, and also one stuck-on on our 19" LCD. but they're all near the edge. and honestly 95% of the time you don't notice them at all.
when i buy a new PB of course i'm going to be worried and checking for no dead/stuck pixels, but if you do have one it's not the end of the world. :p you just live with it and forget about it. 8)

Well, I never had too many problems with Fortran, remember it was new then, so why not think that peolple in their home might wish to program 'something', I sure did . Also, no one had concieved of a GUI os, or any of the programs that we now take for granted.
The computers of that era also had the most awesome old electronic smell about them, the components and insulation were made of different stuff than our odourless computers of today.
Also the computer of the time typically occupied whole buildings, so a room sized futuristic version was really putting it 'out there', where they admit they couldn't concieve of the technology that would allow it. .... just like people on macrumors trying to pick future Macs... how would we go guessing what computers would be like in fifty years time, in 2055?
I dips my hat to them ... true pioneers, true legends!

Got my room set up with the Powerbook now.
http://www.frazmal.com/andrewfee/setups/feb05/powerbook.jpg
The 17" Powerbook; the slogan for the iMac is "where did the computer go." At only 1" thick, I've been saying this more about my Powerbook than my old iMac, especially when it's closed. ;)
On the left is my A5 Wacom graphics tablet, the mouse is my Logitech MX1000, that's my iPod Shuffle charging in the USB2.0 Hub, and to the right of that are my Grado SR-80s.
http://www.frazmal.com/andrewfee/setups/feb05/television.jpg
My 28" CRT. I've spent a hell of a long time calibrating this for the best geometry I could get, and the best picture quality. It's an IDTV, so I get freeview in it, and it had a ton of other features. (picture-in-picture etc)
http://www.frazmal.com/andrewfee/setups/feb05/consoles.jpg
Gamecube, PSP, Nintendo DS, AV Switch, GBA/NDS games and my PDA.
http://www.frazmal.com/andrewfee/setups/feb05/games.jpg
My other games. At one point I didn't have enough room to store all my games on that, but I've been "streamlining" my collection.
My setup had changed a lot in the last few months.
I did have a fairly good 1000 watt 5.1 setup (with a massive sub) but when I bought my Grados (headphones) they just couldn't compare, so I ended up selling them. I've still not heard any speakers that compare to these headphones, and I still don't have an amp for them yet. (although a few devices have amplified headphone jacks)
I had an Xbox, PS2 and Gamecube at one point, but sold the ps2/xbox shortly before getting the PSP/NDS, partly to raise funds for them, but also because there isn't much due out for either that I'm actually interested in now. They're so cheap now, if there is a killer app, I could easily go out and get one anyway.
There used to be a 20" iMac where the Powerbook is now. While the Powerbook is a smaller screen, I actually prefer working on it, and feel more productive. Even though I do a lot of Photoshop work, I think there was a lot of "wasted" space on that big a screen.
I purchased Noise Ninja the other day, and I can't believe how much cleaner my shots are when using it. :D

Argh, I'm an idiot - didn't see you were in the UK. I am getting the Panasonic 30" Widescreen, and thought maybe I could save a few $$$ by going with a 28 incher.
Oh well, your setup rocks!

Hi
Can someone tell me how big (width/height) the screen is for 20 inch and/or 23 inch.
The 20 inch doesn't seem to be much bigger than my 15 inch imac screen - just wider. :/
Thanks

It's a Macally RFKey wireless keyboard (http://www.macally.com/spec/usb/input_device/keyboards.html). It has arrow keys, they're just located below the number keypad. It's a really great keyboard.

On the left are my Siemens phones and my Logitech MX 700. On the right my Shuffle, Airport Extreme and my LaCie HD hiding behind the other plant. The PB is connected to my Sony Amp, and there are two big speakers on the sides of the desk.
Now the only things missing are my iPod mini and my 23" Cinema Display... :D

Thanks, I usually keep it this way. Everything I work on is in the cupboard on the right hand side. After I am done with it it goes back there. I hate nothing more than an untidy desk. :D

Wow, thanks so much. I love it too. The display, believe it or not, I bought on Ebay for less than $60, because it didn't have the power adapter with it. So, I modified an old clamshell iBook adapter to make it work with the display. I'm glad you like it. Thank you for the compliment.

Descriptions:
(From left to right, up to down...well sort of, it gets messy!!)
Setup_1.jpg
A)PowerBook setup which is usually on my bed, it sleeps on the desk and I make sure I keep it cool
B) 5 Macintosh LC series
C) Monitors, Printers, iMac Motherboard, TrackBall
D) 2 Old PowerBook 100s, 1 500 series
E) Mac 512k, Mac SE (Painted)
F) My PC (far left), 'Mystic' Color Classic running 'Doom', Apple keyboard and screen to the right*
G) My Nintendo DS, 12" PowerBook G4, and my Green-blade Lightsaber (And yes those are Star Wars sheets, :))*
Setup_2.jpg
A) G3 MiniTower - was used as a jukebox for a while
B) Part of an Apple adjustable keyboard I found at a thrift store
D) A quick make-shift hub I needed to use with my old G3 Setup*
E) A Bunch of HDs and CD-ROMs, SCSI/IDE, and one Slide Scanner
F) Power Mac 7200 with CDs and Books
G) Power Mac 8500 tower using my 7500's Motherboad and RAM
H) Atari 2600 Jr and iBook bottom half for parts
I) Apple 1705 Monitor with G3 & 12inch PowerBook G4 Rev A - Brand New!
J) Performa 635CD with old low-res Apple 14-inch display
K) Macintosh 540 All-In-One series I think - can't remember exact model
L) Performa 6400(?) case, another Mac LC (1 of 5) + Apple 13' CRT Display
M) Macintosh 5200/75 LC (All-In-One)
N) Quadrea 880AV & Sharp 27" TV ...Why? Because it looks awesome!* :D
Setup_3.jpg
My setup in my room in my parent's house in PA - There is my old 19inch Mono TV, 15inch VGA Gateway Monitor from the local thrift store (they get a lot of business from me :p), Semi-working old RCA VCR, Hard Drives and such, Multimedia Speakers, Apple Extended Keyboard, and Apple Bus Mouse II (* Looks pretty much the same now, the PowerBook is always moving around)
Well that's it for now I think, I have tons of pictures but I don't feel like taking up all of my iDisk space. I need a desk in my room but, I have to clean my room badly first. And yes the PowerBook is usually on my bed but, it stays cool thanks to the fan next to me - and besides that I never let it get too hot. (unlike when my old clamshell iBook was overheating - I stupidly left it on a poofy chair and it kept making the alert sound ever 15 min, I ran upstairs and turned it off. I spent the rest of the day with it's keyboard open and a fan right on it.)
It's great seeing all these setups, mine is the messiest of them all I bet.

When I switch to the Mac mini (using the VGA/USB switcher box), it drives the Sony 23" LCD at 1920 x 1200 resolution. When I snapped this picture, my Sony PC was driving both LCDs. I use a Matrix code screensaver on all of my PCs, so when they're all screensaving, it's very movie-like. :)
Do you get any slowdown with the Mini running a screen in such a high res? i.e. do the cube effects work when you change users, expose function without being choppy etc...
I'm strongly considering putting off the iMac purchase and getting a Dell 24" to go with my Mini.
Cheers,
Adam

If you can still get it, the Dell 24" deal (http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=115895) seems like a really good way to get one of those screens for supercheap. At that price, I'm tempted to buy one just to have it.

Or as neat and clean as I could get with 4 monitors on the G5 :D !
It's nice to have room to put papers and the iBook on the desk! The old setup left no room for anything!
I find that this arrangement works very well--plenty of free desk space, and it's easy to see all the monitors without turning too much.

whats with the Sony fetish? :pI'm primarily a PC user... I used to have a lot of Dell stuff, but have gradually replaced it all with Sony gear. The Mac mini and iPod Photo are recent additions to my setup... I'm not a Switcher, I'm an Adder. (Not the snake.)
Beyond what you see here, my Sony gear includes: 32" HD TV in bedroom, 3 DVD players (400 disc changer + DVP-S9000ES player in home theatre, DVD/VHS combo player in bedroom), clock radio, cordless phone, 7" LF-X5 LocationFree TV, 2 digital cameras (incl. DSC-F828 8MP camera), 9" TV in kitchen, 2 camcorders (DV, 8mm), and a MiniDisc recorder/player.
I congratulate Apple on finally creating a machine (the Mac mini) that seamlessly integrates into my existing setup at a quite reasonable price.

I think it is because most people are more comfortable inserting a CD with their right hand. It's also the design that they chose for the display hinge that prevented them from putting ports on the back.

I think technically, your screen IS a flat screen monitor. They usually say that for CRT's that have a flat surface. They will say LCD for when it is an.....LCD.

I think what he meant was that they advertised a "flat tube"--you know, a CRT with a flat tube--but rather, the monitor had a round tube and, basically, a (flat) piece of glass in front of it.

when i stayed on campus my desk was on the same wall as the door, so you had to walk a solid 5 feet in the room to see what kind of equipment i was working with... as far as saving money for tuition and beer --> Uncle Sam and my fellow tax payers are helping me through school and the part time job covered the beer...

well, im goin to college here pretty soon aswell, and initially I was going to get a 17" powerbook and use it as a desktop replacement since for my first two years of college are going to be at a small school. I wouldnt want to take it to class, leaving no need for portability other then when I go home for breaks. Then I started thinking about maybee getting a 15" pb incase I do end up wanting to take it to class(still very unlikely though) and for the fact that I thought the 17" began to look a little wierd to me. I was thinking id get the 15", and plug it into a 2005fpw. Then I started to think about how I really like typing on the powerbooks and how an external screen would take up clutter space. so then finally I started thinking about just getting a 15". Would I eventually regret doing that? So what should I do?
12" is not an option, its too little for on the road use for me, and I lik the widescreens and backlit keyboards.

i've got a 15" PowerBook - it's all good. i've been taking this to and from college for a few years (i first had a 15" TiBook, now a 15" AlBook) and it's an excellent size - fits in very well with a A4 size notebook or folder. i've been using it for PhotoShop/graphics work and the screen size has been good for that.
i would maybe only recommend the 17" if you're doing some heavy video editing/FX work. i've started doing that and i could really use the space of a 2nd screen.
the 15" is very portable and a nice size to work with. i'd say it's "just right". :) (just max it out with 128MB VRAM and as much RAM as you can. i've got 1.5GB - but why not max it out with 2GB. :p)

Here's my new setup at the dorm now that my gf has my p'book.
My external drive is hidden in the drawer behind the keyboard and didn't make it into the picture. It's difficult to get a decent picture, because my desk is literally 3 feet from a wall. The speaker on the right is a satellite to my 5.1 system that is hooked up to my airport express, dvd player, and xbox.
Enjoy

That's a 1TB Lacie Bigger Disk Extreme in back of the 23" and 17" LCDs, and a Wiebetech 400GB FW RAID box on top of the DP Power Mac G5.
