Nothing the windex on the glass couldn't handle. :P

And when I get my iCurve, I will have a 19" monitor (miniDVI to DVI) and set that up on the desk next to it.

Thanks for comments. :D

Yeah that looks like a 24". One way I tell is that an Apple keyboard is exactly the same width as a 20" widescreen LCD, and that one is definitely larger than the keyboard.

I tell by the chin, shortest and widest. Overall the smallest chin on the iMac line. Tis a 24" alright.

My setup really hasn't changed all that much, but I got a new camera, and I'm trying to find excuses to use it. :p

Taken with my new toy, a Sony DSC-N2:

I'm surprised the N2 came out so quick after the N1 was released. Other than that the N2 is NICE. 3" touchscreen LCD right? Downside I think is if you don't have a stylus then there will be fingerprints on it...I wonder how well it would work with an invisible skin over it...

Yeah, 3" touchscreen. It's very nice, and very bright. So far, I'm really liking it. It comes with a stylus that connects to the wrist strap. However, while it does show fingerprints like.no.other., they wipe off pretty easily.

So far, I'm quite pleased.

Got an iMac when i was 12, (4 years agoish) and it was kept under a bunkbed lacking Internet access. It now lives in a sorta cubby, comfy on desks me and my grandad built for it. Its hooked upto an equally old Stereo System and connected to a Greyscale iPod 4g, iPod nano 1st gen, Pro speakers (dont need them but they look cool), Pro keyboard and Mightymouse, Sony Eye Toy, HP all in one (Below desk), and several cameras phones ect., Obviously it now enjoys full internet access. Don't you find that slightly awkward with all the wires coming out? Also, I've found a few keyboards I find far superior to the Macbook Pro's.

In fact, I do find it annoying to plug in the cables every time I come home from work, but I suppose that's the price of mobility.

As for keyboard preference, I've become so accustomed to the MBP keyboard layout that it has become muscle memory. For that reason, I haven't found an external wireless keyboard that works well for me. I will admit that I am very choosy when it comes to mice and keyboards, though. I'm also addicted to the Mighty Mouse scroll ball. I can't stand the two button function, however, the scroll ball is enough to keep me using it. Any keyboard recommendations?

The HDs are LaCie 320GB drives daisy chained via FW800 to the MBP. Each is used for system backup, photo/video storage, miscellaneous file storage. LaCie drives have always been reliable for me.

That was actually the first keyboard I tried. It was eventually banished to the PC. If there were an external wireless keyboard that had the same features (low-profile, back-lit, screen control) as my MBP keyboard, plus a full number pad and forward delete, I might consider it. Price is of no consequence. I don't think I'll see those features in a wireless keyboard anytime soon. Although, I have been wrong in the past many times:)

Thanks, yeah, the chairs do cost a lot, but I justified it by thinking this way: Most people spend more, if not a lot more, on their beds. So why wouldn't I want to get the best desk chair when I sit at the computer working, studying, etc almost as much as I'm sleeping? Plus, these chairs are rock solid and last FOREVER. I shouldn't need to get a new one for at least 10-20 years. Once you try one of these you can't go back to regular chairs, I don't know how I used that old thing for so long :P

I also have that printer. Though not at the moment - I had to RMA it yesterday, as it caught fire. Well, nearly. Black smoke from the paper ejection port :(

Here's hoping the new one doesn't do that...

I have that printer too! Got it from staples for $25 on sale... quite the deal.

Here's hoping mine doesn't catch fire either

Where can one test out these chairs? I'm in an old OfficeMax cheapo and I spend a ridiculous amount of time at my desk. Don't know if I can drop $700 right now, but I'd like to try some better options.

Yeah, if you go to their site (http://www.hermanmiller.com/CDA/SSA/Locator/1,1824,a10-c498,00.html) you can hopefully find a location close to you where you can test one out for yourself before spending the money.

Hey Maxwell Smart...how did you manage that framed Beatles portrait above your desk...looks hand drawn...one of a kind...but if not, any idea where I could find something like that?

It was hand drawn, but mine is a print of the original drawing, it was made by an asian artist that I saw in the mall, and I purchased it with an inexpensive frame and later replaced it with a nicer wooden one that you see in the picture.

I have that printer too! Got it from staples for $25 on sale... quite the deal.

Yeah, it's an awesome printer, I rarely print in color, so it should last at least a few years on the stock toner cartridge. I think I picked mine up for like $50 after rebate incl. the toner cartridge which I think is a really nice deal.

Bah, think I payed £55 for it. Rip-off Britain as they say. But still, bargain, and the quality was very good. Supposedly they're reasonably easy to refill manually as well, which should save a bunch of money in the long run.

Kinda noisy though, though that may just have been my cursed one...

That's a Dell 2007WFP, I have pretty much the same hardware as Schnebar there (20" iMac C2D with 2GB + Dell 2007wfp (http://rogersmj.com/tech/workstations)). It's a fantastic monitor for the price, has four inputs and a USB hub, is height-adjustable, and if you get one with an IPS panel (as I did) then it is the same panel as the 20" iMac has so the color reproduction is identical. Some are made with PVA panels though. Either way, it's a pretty good deal if you get it on sale in the low $300s. If you don't need the extras though, like PIP, four inputs, and a USB hub, you can get other 20" monitors for less.

The monitor is the 2007wfp - and I love it. I had a 24" before it, and that was great too. Awesome bang for your buck, and so far haven't had any issues.

Oops, nope, I've just been too lazy to update my sig. I sold my 24" and adopted a 20" instead, so that's what you see in the pictures. The exact opening of the desk is a little bigger than 20.5 inches, so I'm not sure the 23" (I'm assuming that's what you have and that's why you're concerned?) would fit. My 20" is 18.5 inches wide - I don't know what the 23" sizes in at (width-wise).

I did it because I got a great deal on the keyboard, and can't afford the mouse I want yet. Also, because the main reason I went wireless is 'cause I kept catching my foot on the cord of the keyboard or mouse, and dragging the whole shebang down onto the floor. Yeah.

I have the 2407, and it's fantastic. I have absolutely no complaints, and it was considerably cheaper than an ACD, so I'm happy. I would have gone 30" if I could afford it, and if the GMA950 in my MacBook (previously my Mini) could have handled it. But 24" is looooots of screen space, lemme tell ya. I really miss it when I use the MacBook on its own, with its tiny 13.3" screen.

I love my Dell monitor. I've never had any problems, and we've ordered 3 and all have come with zero dead pixels.

I've never personally been tempted by the 30-inchers, but that's a combination of no need (I sold my 24" cause even that was more real estate than I really needed) and no funds.

Personally, though, if I was shopping for a couple of 30-inchers, the Dell would be the clear choice (unless money was no object). The dells are $1275, making it about $2550 for two. The ACDs, however, are $2k a piece, making the total up to over $4k. That's a good chunk of change that I just couldn't justify spending simply because one is "prettier" than the other.

May I ask what made you move to a 20" from 24"? How much of a difference do you notice since switching to a 20"?

I'm looking to get one of those Dell widescreen displays, but I'm not sure if the extra money justifies that extra 4 inch diagonal. After looking through this thread, I just want to get rid of my old 19" asap! :(

Eh, I did it mainly because I needed the money at the time, and I was hardly ever at my desk anymore (so the screen was just going to waste!). My fiance had two 20-inchers set up, so we just split those and sold the 24".

There's definitely a difference between the two sizes, but for me, 20" is plenty so I don't miss the extra 4 inches. It really all depends on your usage, though.

I had a 20" Dell about two years back, and this 24" I have now is... well, it huge-er. The reason *I* switched to a bigger display was that this was the display with the highest resolution (1920x1200) that the Mac Mini and the MacBook could use. Can't use two displays with either, I'm afraid, so that wasn't an option here. It's very nice, and I would recommend it to you if you're only gonna have one main monitor!

Yeah, the GX 260 is just a web-server (or so that's its supposed point - sometimes I think my fiance just likes to collect 'em - there's one under our couch that's never been turned on), so it's not a main machine at all. My fiance is actually a technician, so I leave all that to him. :p

Nothing personal, but why do people buy wireless keyboards before they buy a wireless mouse? I would think that that mouse should lose its tail first because you move it around the most...

Although Spanish is my native tongue I can speak pretty good English. I've been learning it since I was about 5.

You speak pretty good appleintelrock! However altavoces in spanish is more like a loudspeaker than a speaker which I think was the term you were trying to give. Una persona que habla español is kind of more appropiate.

Amen to that. My server has 1.6 TB, and most of it's video. Stuff takes up space. Add in my other computers and external drives, and my total storage space is well over 2 TB. You can never have too many hard drives :D

Oh, and one last time: please, I beg you people, stop quoting images to make little one-line replies unless you're referencing something specific in the images (and even then only include the one image you're talking about)!!! That wasn't his point, I don't think. The point is that most people pay for external monitors when they want to be able to use their laptops as desktop replacements while they're at home. If he already HAS a desktop, why pay $1k for a second screen?

The macbook is used a lot "on the go" out and about and it's nice to come back and hook it up to big screen, my partner tends to use the iMac a lot too - its a kind of "his and hers" setup

Dang.I havent seen a CRT monitor in a mac setup in a while! You should swap that CRT with that nice flatscreen tv you have there.

The only reason I'm keeping my CRT (Viewsonic Professional Series P810-3) till it dies is it can do an ungodly resolution of 2048x1536... My Viewsonic N2060W LCD TV can only do 1366x768 (720p). That res is just shy of the 30" ACD at 2560x1600!

Also the reason I have to sit so close is because of running at that resolution the text is uber tiny but its so nice for photo editing to have that massive resolution.

Okay, before I go off the deep end, two things:

1) Scale images before you upload them, or just link us to full size images.
2) DO NOT...EVER....EVER...EVER quote someone's message and include the photos, ESPECIALLY if they didn't scale them!

Just do these two things and it'll help EVERYONE out...

There is no need to host these images off site, you can add images to your post directly by looking below where you type text in the "Additional Options" box and clicking "Manage Attachments." Also, looks like an InMotion tablet PC or something is missing from that shot ;)

I'm using Ubuntu Dapper, which i believe is 6.06. It's as stable as hell and I highly recommend it. For me, it was a toss-up between Ubuntu (GNOME) or Kubuntu (KDE), and what made me spring for Ubuntu was this: http://code.google.com/p/avant-window-navigator/ which is only available for the GNOME window system. Plan on installing it when I have a bit of time on my hands ;)

Anyhoo, Ubuntu is definitely faster and snappier than OS X on the G4 Mac Mini. Though I must say, Panther running on the Mac Mini was definitely faster than when I upgraded to Tiger last April.

I'm happy to see others have put their apple stickers on TI-83's! I display mine with pride..:D :apple:

Haha I thought I was the only person putting Apple stickers on my TI! Apparently I'm not alone! :apple:

I've updated my setup quite a bit since the last time I posted it (many pages ago). I got this terrific mouse, the Logitech VX Revolution, I think it's the best mouse ever made, it feels terrific in my hand and has a bunch of cool features. I also got a new LCD, it's a Compaq 15" display, but I can't complain because I got it really cheap. Sorry about the quality on one of the pictures, the first one on my digital camera didn't come out good at all and it had run out of batteries so I had to take it on my cameraphone.

Makes it a lot nicer to work at the computer at night, and uses little power! Also, an awesome 7-port USB hub which has completely consolidated my insane USB cable collection.

Yay! Finally talked my mom into switching! I convinced her after showing her how problem free my Macbook was compared to the family's Dell. It's nothing specatcular (17" CD refurb, GMA 950), but it's perfectly fine for web browsing and photo viewing - all my sister and mom will do on it.

Those speakers are shield so it shouldn't be a problem. Also, I'm pretty sure that LCD's don't get affected by magnectic fields, on CRT's.

I actually don't use it when it's hooked up to the 24". I'll just start it up in clamshell mode, but then open the top up so that the computer doesn't get to hot.

Yeah, I've never had any issues with them. My cell phone and them used to not get along, and they would buzz before I got a phone call when I was on Cingular. It was kind of nice, I could pick up before the phone would even ring. Now on Sprint it doesn't do it as often.

Several updates here!
1. Most notably, the Dell 700m has been sold off and replaced with a black MacBook! 2.0GHz Core Duo, currently 1GB of RAM (going to 2GB soon), 80GB hard drive, dual-layer DVD burner. VERY nice machine, got a great deal on it…and now I am completely Mac (except for the server of course, that’s Linux).

2. Added gigabit ethernet. MUCH faster than the old 10/100. Also, I moved all the networking stuff (router, switch, etc), my USB hub, and all my charge/sync cables to the keyboard tray that I don’t use; you can see it under where the MacBook is placed on the desk. That cleaned up a lot of cable clutter on the desk.

3. Sold the Logitech S530 set and got an Apple Bluetooth keyboard and Logitech VX Revolution mouse.

What kind of mouse pad is that??

It's an Allsop metal mouse pad I bought at Best Buy a little over a year ago when I was looking for a way to spend Christmas gift cards I had received. I didn't really know what to expect, but it's been wonderful. Smooth, stable (the whole bottom surface is a grippy rubber material -- it does not move unless you want it to), tracks well, and I think it was only about $15.

V270 ;) I like it a lot as my mobile mouse, it feels good and it's bluetooth...but it doesn't have enough buttons. I would love to have a back button and another button for Expose. I haven't found a Bluetooth mouse I like with enough buttons that's also fairly portable.

Our setups are remarkably similar actually....

1) Howcome you sold the Logitech m/k set? I also ended up getting the bt kb! (and the bt mm)

2) Why'd you sell the 700m? Is the macbook much faster?

3) Do you find that music sounds just as good on those speakers as on the old 5.1 set? I actually got the Z-5450 (wireless) but I had to give them back because they interefered with my mouse. I am now speakerless  and not sure which ones to get.

Overall, I love the setup!

1. I liked the Logitech set, but decided I liked the Apple keyboard even more. I hate the MM though. Love the free-flying scroll wheel on the Revolution.

2. Why did I sell the 700m? Because it's not a Mac, and once I got used to working on a Mac I had to have one on the go. It was also a little over two years old, which is pretty long for me to keep a piece of technology. And yes, the MacBook is a crapton faster than the 700m was.

3. Yes, the sound is pretty comparable. Maybe lacking a touch in the high range, but overall very good.

FYI: Your site incorrectly detects that I'm using IE when I'm using Safari. Oh, and it's REALLY messed up when using Safari.

I know :( I am appropriately humiliated. I hacked together that design well before I ever had a Mac or, honestly, cared at all about Safari. And I was still learning my way around Wordpress theming, so I didn't devote as much effort as I should have to cross-browser compatibility. My main mission was just to insult IE users ;) I have a fantastic design idea, and as soon as I get the time I'm going to be implementing it 100% for all browsers.

Lmao, now I have a good excuse to ditch my 700m for a Mac! I'm just waiting for an ultraportable Macbook though!

Yup, the bt keyboard is incredible! I truly love the feel of it. I actually had the MX Rev but I gave it back. It felt great in the hand, but I found the scroll wheel annoying in the sense that it would always switch back and forth, and I always found myself tweaking the settings. I love the frictionless mode, but I was too annoyed changing the settings all the tiem. However, the real reason I gave it back was because it was interfering with my LOGITECH wireless speakers (mouse was jumpy). I gave it back and bought a bt mm thinking it wouldnt interfere (it still does..only then I relaized BT is on the same channel as RF!). However, now that Im using it, the MM feels good, and it matches!

I think i'll end up going with those speakers. I realzie I don't really watch movies that much so 5.1 isnt really necessary. I really want the best music performance.

Once again, great setup! I will post once Apple sends me a new iMac (had to get my 24" replaced!!)
