I've changed things up a bit since last posting. I used to have my X360, like everthing else, hooked up to my HDTV. But I continuosly found myself at the computer desk, then switching back to my bed to play games, back to the computer. So, I got a VGA cable for my X360, and now with the press of a button on my monitor, I can go from this:

http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b156/mattcube64/DSC00166.jpg

...to this:

http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b156/mattcube64/DSC00167.jpg

And lastly, just a wide shot of the room:

A bad last pic, I may take another one later...

Couldn't fit the whole thing into one picture, there was a 50mm lens and if I changed it to the 28-105 it would be too slow to hold steady.

^^^Thanks for all the nice comments, guys. I am very proud of my room, and I do like to share it. I'm not gonna lie, I like to post it partially to brag, but that's because I am very happy with my room. Nevertheless, I have had another request to stop posting pics, and so I will try to only post pics after major overhauls or additions. Which might be a ways from now, because I may have just run into another transmission rebuild (I honestly have the worst luck, ever), maybe a new car (Which means monthly payments and more insurance), and I start college this fall (ie, say good bye to extra cash). :)

...I suppose that's the sound of life and responsibiltiy knocking on my door. :o

Several updates here!
1. Most notably, the Dell 700m has been sold off and replaced with a black MacBook! 2.0GHz Core Duo, currently 1GB of RAM (going to 2GB soon), 80GB hard drive, dual-layer DVD burner. VERY nice machine, got a great deal on it…and now I am completely Mac (except for the server of course, that’s Linux).

2. Added gigabit ethernet. MUCH faster than the old 10/100. Also, I moved all the networking stuff (router, switch, etc), my USB hub, and all my charge/sync cables to the keyboard tray that I don’t use; you can see it under where the MacBook is placed on the desk. That cleaned up a lot of cable clutter on the desk.

3. Sold the Logitech S530 set and got an Apple Bluetooth keyboard and Logitech VX Revolution mouse.

Coming soon…a new custom built desk!

I'd also like to add, that this is one of my favorite setups in this thread. I absolutely love the multiple screens, the computers, and all the workspace. Oh, and I really liked the the desktop wallpaper on your Macbook, and so I kinda copied the idea myself. :p

Thank you! That's very kind. I always like seeing pictures of your room...I would have loved to have something like that in high school! My parents were pretty strict on "screen time" though, and it was a battle just to get them to allow me to build a computer to put in my room. TV? No way in hell. Video game system? Ha. Now, I spend my whole day in front of a screen anyway, so a lot of good that did. ;)

I do web site design/coding, among other things, so I need my screen space. I sometimes even feel the two 20" screens are too small, so one day I'll have a couple 24"-ers or maybe a 30" or two...if I can get it authorized by the boss (er, the wife, that is).

I too like the workspace afforded by that desk, which is why I chose it...however, it was only a $50 Staples desk and after 3 years it's not quite so sturdy anymore. In the next month I hope to be able to assemble a custom desk I've been designing. It will have at least as much space as this one and a few extra features to make it somewhat unique. I'll definitely post here when I finish it. I'm quite excited...I have a thing for desks. I've owned about 6 of them in the last 10 years.

I too was trying to think of some smart-ass remark to try to beat into people's heads that when there's more than a couple images in a post they should only quote the image(s) they're directly referencing!!! Especially when they're large! Holy crap people, is it REALLY that hard?

I should really just stop, otherwise I'll probably be preaching this until these forums are old and crusty.

I just had to do it :D :apple: But I agree, is it that hard deleting the pictures that one isn't referring to? But instead they insist on quoting ALL the images...-sighs- Maybe we should start a new "Post Your Mac Setup: Past & Present for those who know how to quote images correctly". Thanks for the compliments. I'm lucky to have a mom that lets me spend my money, and my time, on what I like doing. She knows that like sports are to some kids, video games and "technology" are my own hobby, and she respects that. I have good grades, am pretty fit, and I'm plenty social, so I don't think she has too much to worry about. I work hard for my money, and while she doesn't agree with every purchase I make, she stands by me in getting what I want.

As for your desk obsession, I feel the same way. My room just doesn't accomodate a large desk. I still have college to attend, but when I finally have an apartment or a small house, the first thing I want to buy is a big, sturdy, solid, desk with A LOT of workspace. I constantly feel cramped in on my little $38 Walmart desk. I'd buy something nicer, I just don't have the room. :o

Right now, I just use two screens for making web browsing quicker and more enjoyable. But I'm pursuing a major in journalism, and advertising design. I'm sure I'll want more screen space when I'm working on multiple projects and assignments in both Photoshop and InDesign.

Awesome! 24s rock! That's sad that you have to put the monitor on a riser! That's one thing I hate about the ACDs; they didn't plan design corroboration.

MattCube,
I think it would be cool if you switched up your room a bit...that way you could have the space to add a desk. It looks to me that the way you have everything positioned doesn't take full advantage of the space you have to work with.

Additionally,
I'd recommend selling your monitor and old TV for something like a 32in HDTV....that way you'd free up a ton of space and possibly be able to get a cozy chair or something in there instead of gaming on your bed.

Just my 2 cents

I would have to agree with that i mean that little table thing you work on is ridiculous you have alot bigger table with your space you just dont use it right.

Yes indeed! I must say it's my best purchase yet... However I'm really annoyed about the wireless ploblems that plague the core2duo machines...

My second monitor doesn't have height adjustment so I was a prop it up on a box and my book on quantum mechanics (it's about as much use as I will get out of it)!

For my Macbook Wallpaper, I copied mroger's idea, and took a pic of my own keyboard with my Sony DSC-N2. I'd be happy to host it, but my flickr upload is maxed for this month. I'll try to do it on the first of the coming month. Unless, you can tell me an upload site that'll keep the pic nice and large for a Wallpaper?

I got the second external Wallpaper from InterFaceLift. It can be found here:

http://interfacelift.com/wallpaper/details.php?id=1016

As for re-arranging my room for a more accomodating desk and a smaller TV, I agree that I could, and probably should, do it. But since I'm moving this fall for college, and I've had a set-up similar to this for about five years, I figure I'll just leave it. I do plan on getting a cheap 32" LCD TV though, this summer, for my friend and I's dorm. I figure we can watch TV on it, play games, and use it as an external monitor (We both have fairly nice computers, he just has Windows).

Some day I plan on getting a nice Cinema Display to match it, but for now I'll settle for this $10 bus-stop beauty. :p

Edit: And before anyone asks, I have to use that keyboard, since the power switch in the Cube is broken and no tinkering at all can make it stop rebooting the Cube. I ended up just unhooking it and booting from the keyboard power button.

My problem with the puck mouse was that there was no way of telling if you have the mouse the correct way in your hand without looking. What I mean is that it is not longer in one direction, telling you that it should fit in your hand this way just by grabbing it. I would constantly reach for it then move the mouse only to find I am moving up and to an angle when I only wanted to move directly up. I was always having to shift the mouse around in my hand.

I have to say I am one of the people wasn't sad to see that mouse quickly discontinued.

Hi

How do you use a Cisco VoIP phone at home? is it connected to your own voice gateway or does your telco offer VoIP directly?

I don't know what exactly is up with his setup, but I had a Cisco VoIP phone for a little while at home that was configured to connect to our office's VoIP system. So it could just be something like that, or Vonage.

Hi

How do you use a Cisco VoIP phone at home? is it connected to your own voice gateway or does your telco offer VoIP directly?

I have an Intertex IX68 router, this can connect any SIP phone directly to a regular line so it can be used as a normal phone.

And as the cisco phones have multiple lines i can use VoIP sevices as well, i have 3 Ciscos at my place, all connected to the router. its very reliable too.

What's this front row hack? That's what I miss the most from iMacs...

This is how I did it. (http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=2006110314322775&query=front%2Brow%2Bmac%2Bpro) Although I'm using a Logitech mouse, I couldn't get the Logitech-specific instructions to work (‘case 2’), so I have the mighty mouse plugged into my monitor to ‘enable’ Front Row.

Here's my new basement setup, PowerMac G4 (in desk) with 17" Studio Display, and on the shelf, my old iMac G3 DV. The G4 Digital Audio (466MHz) cost me only $100. Granted, I've ungraded the hard drive[s], added 512 MB RAM, and reinstalled the OS, the cost for the upgrades was almost nil.

http://img263.imageshack.us/img263/5082/dsc00003ry9.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

And, I've finally made use of my iMac G4's old Pro Speakers, seeing as the G4 tower has the same jack!

I'm looking to repaint the walls, and in the next few months, getting a new printer to replace that old one from 7 years ago. I do love the display... 1600 x 1200 resolution is amazing.

What do you use the G3 for?

Before the G4 Tower came along, the G3 was my parents main unit for web surfing and games. It's actually a decent machine - 512MB RAM, 60GB hard drive, 450MHZ processor...But now, the G4 is faster, and the screen real estate of the ASD is a large advantage.

But right now he's (the G3) kinda just chillin' there.... Might actually sell it if I can detach myself from it, its served me well for the past 7 years.

My dad's into that whole audiophile thing, so they're a hand-me down. IIRC something was mentioned about the cabling costing more per meter than the pair of speakers themselves, so it probably represents a fair amount of overkill. In theory thicker wires gives a better signal, because as alFR said conductivity is proportional to area. The shielding from interference is also better.

But tbh, a lot that audiophile stuff is largely crap I think. Someone tried to talk up not changing the direction of speaker wiring (keep the amp end at the amp and the speaker end at the speaker if you move / reorganise your setup) because the 'electrons get used to flowing in one direction' and 'the conductivity improves in that direction'.

Still, I'm waiting on my the next upgrade to try and get my mits on a 2nd hand pair of BWs. Good speakers, but it'd probably mean buying a new amp to drive them.

wow thats awesome just read the wiki about this never knew that

soo electricity flows better for suck devices other than heating and incadescent lighting as thicker cables because it causes less what I see as heat and loss of transmision. I hope I got the idea of it.

I guess this person doesn't have a clue about how amplifiers or speakers work. HINT: Alternating Current causes the speaker cone to move, meaning, the electrons will go in both directions.

From what I can remeber (as soon as you leave uni with an electronics degree you forget all the phyiscs crap) electrons do not move. Current is provided by the chain reaction of changing electron charge. You do get a certain amount of electron drift but that is so so slow. About half a mile per year I think in copper.

It's diet - still got the caffeine fix, but no sugar. The 'fat' coke/pepsi gives you all the sugar-rush problems. I get the shakes, then have to move on to the whisky. Whisky's good for late-night programming - provides the necessary zen aura of reflectiveness and concentration :)

Actually from my experience, MacBooks suck at dual screen because they don't have enough video ram. The MBPs are much better. I had a 23" ACD hooked up to my MB and I when I got rid of it, the computer was so much smoother and faster just on the MB's display.

This was mine during fall 2005.
- The G5 was a rev. A single proc. 1.8 Ghz that USPS smashed up pretty good in shipping (can't tell in this picture because it's partially hidden and propped against the desk).
- The ibook was a 12" 1.33 Ghz model.
- The display is a 20" ACD
- The top keyboard is :apple: BT and the bottom :apple: wired
- The mouse is a MS BT intellimouse, and
- The speakers are HK soundsticks, version 1.

I sold both the G5 and ibook. The 20" ACD, soundsticks, and BT keyboard are still in use (with my macbook), and my new mouse is a BT MM. Maybe I'll post a pic of that later. :)

Yep, I resized, and adjusted the brightness of the wallpaper using Photoshop, and displayed them using the slideshow feature. At it's native brightness, and even at the lowest brightness setting of the iPods, the wallpaper photographed as almost white. Thus the wallpaper had to be 'dimmed down' in order to photograph correctly.

I only browse the web and listen to music, but just love my macs, so end up buying a new one every time they are updated.

Did some math...were they all new Apple laptop? If they were, lets say average price was 2000, thats over 100,000 on laptop to surf the web and music!

*That is of course they are all new*

They were all new except for 3 refurbs I have bought. My first every powerbok cost me a a wopping £2400, it was my first mac I had no idea what I had bought. But I liked the look of the apple logo on the back. My sony vaio, had died and there was no way, I was buying another one. My family thought I had gone crazy now several years on, my entire family have macs.

Yes, I have spent a small fortune on macs, some off the older ones, I have sold on. Hence why I have gone through so many. Since being married, my purcahsing has slowed down thus why I bought a refurb 17" MBP, but I still make sure I buy a new machine every 6 months.

As for the cost, I dont really think of it as my first every pc a 286 back in 1990/91 cost my family over £2000 then. So in comparison macs are cheap. Money is there to be spent, as my father said you cant take it with you. So you might as well spend it and enjoy your life.

*sigh*.... why oh why do people post pictures of the 27 laptops they bought over the last year and get defensive when everyone cites them as irrational?

i find that although i do go through "laptop lust" each time a refresh happens, economically and productively it makes zero sense for ME to update so frequently. took me a while to finally overcome the whole "i need to buy a new laptop simply because 'i likes it' ideology.

i have stuck to doing a laptop refresh every 2.5 - 3 years. I bought myself a CD blackbook in 2006 and intend on purchasing a macbook pro with the release of the 45 nm peryn intel processors to replace my aging G5 desktop of many years

Spot on....I hate when people horde the money, and never plan to spend it. (Not that I'm saying don't save any, I'm currently not buy Xbox 360 because while I have the cash , if I want a iPhone, 10.5 and iWork(maybe iLife) I shouldn't buy the 360)

I feel sorta the same way, the reason we work is to make money; And the reason we make money is to spend it on stuff we want. I will admit that I can be a cheap person at times, but it is only because I like spending my money on things that I think have value and are worth my money. I like spending my money on tangible things, I hate spending money on consumables. I'm not a big drinker nor do I like going to the bars. I would rather spend $20 to get a new DVD then spend it on a night of drinking.

While I like to buy things, I only buy things when I think I am getting a deal on it. For example, I am in the market for a new TV. I don't just look at bestbuy, I shop around everything; online, instores, read reviews, talk to friends, etc. I want to know that the money I am spending is going towards getting the best value. Know that say spending an extra $100 or something adds value to the tv such as better contrast ratio or more inputs or a larger screen, etc.

My girlfriend and I get in these arguements all the time. She might find a really nice set of dishes she wants, I ask her what makes them so much more expensive then others and she just says "they look nice". I have a hard time seeing value in that, my brain works in a practical way, I need a practical reason why something is worth the extra money. I guess that is why I am an engineer, we are trained to think in this manor.

But everyone is different, if someone wants to spend all their money on one thing, it's not our place to say they can't. As long as he/she is paying all their bills and taxes and not on wellfare where the rest of us have to pay for them, then I don't have a problem. I have problem when people spend all their money, then needs the government to support them, thus using the money of the rest of us.

http://img162.imageshack.us/img162/7582/img6427nj3.jpg

I was really waiting for the bump to core2duo in the macbook line, which was right around the corner at the time, but couldn't wait, I wanted to get as much as I could for the pb so I sold that and, got a 20" imac, and I figured I had 14 days to return the imac if the bump happened, and if it took longer I would be able to sell it and get my money back.

http://img98.imageshack.us/img98/2180/img3272fb9.jpg

And about a week later, the bump in the macbook line happened, so I returned the imac, and left with the blackbook

MBM007,
That's the 23", I had to use the mini-dvi to vga to hook it up though...I tried using the hdmi port in the back of the tv and after trying it out, and some research on here, I found out that it won't work, and it's easier to just use the vga, and yup the blackbook is on top of the left speaker.

socks,
I really can't complain, for the price they're great...I don't have much experience with other monitors though, but they're definitely a step-up up from normal home audio stereo speakers.

How do you like that Slingbox? What version do you have? How is the picture quality?

I'm heading off to college in the fall, and MU only offers basic cable in the dorms. I was thinking of setting up the slingbox here at my house, so I can have sattelite television at my dorm. Does that sound like a good use for it, or am I completely missing the point?

The quality is good as long as you have a good connection. Being at a college you will at least have a T1 service, I think? I have the oldest model available, not sure which version. I bought it about 2 years ago if that helps. I have actually used my cell as a bluetooth modem (using Verizon's EVDO), and the quality is decent while I am in my vehicle. You should get the slingbox, it would definetly beat basic cable.

The key to cable organization isn't organizing it...it's hiding it. Ok, perhaps organization would work, but I'll never know. read up:

http://lifehacker.com/software/workspaces/hack-attack-the-cordless-workspace-sort-of-179911.php

I am too cheap and lazy to get to ikea and spend $26 on 2 of those wire trays so I just built 2 of my own with the back of an old bookcase i found on the street, some screws around the edges to hold the giant mess of wires and some twist ties and eye-hooks holding it to the bottom of my desk. works perfectly, you can't see a cord except necessary ones on the desk unless you were to sit on the floor.

An old coworker had a glass desk so she used a fancy black metal & cardboard storage box from ikea on the floor to hold all the ugly cables.

The ol' sawtooth is still lookin' sharp, it's a small advantage, but there is no 6 year old pc that looks that good.

OMG at 15 why do you need that many computers, I mean wow. Do you do production of some sort??

or are you a hardcore gamer?

Also far left monitor is that LCD or CRT

Hello kitki83, the monitor on the left is LCD (unless you are talking about the BlackBook,) I'm not a big gamer, but I do use the monitors for building on Second Life. I build furniture, sell prefabs, and do many customs. I like being able to look at everything in detail, since thats what I'm all about. Its a nice excuse to have, and I just love computers.

And jordygreen its a 2407WFP (24) and the one on the left is an old Microtek 19"

Hey, what kind of laptop is this? I know it's mac, but I think I had one when I was like, 8 or 9. It was stolen... :( I just remember it having a separate floppy drive and it had a track ball instead of a trackpad...

This is my setup so far, I only have one picture right now, I decided to just take a shot of everything instead of little shots of individuals. I still use a PC, but I absolutely love OSX. If it were not for a few games and how good it still works, it wouldn't be there! Anyway, here is the shot:

At 15 you're living large. BlackBook, MBP, 24" screen, Blackberry.....?. When i was 15, i had a Gameboy and a swatch and that was it.

Why are you jealous? Get with the times, he isn't the only young person on this forum with a nice setup. When I was 15 I got my first PC (4 years ago) and my first cell 3 years ago. Now cell phones are standard for any kid who goes to school in a non-local area.

Sorry but if everybody keeps ranting like this, this is going to turn into what the "18 and younger: post your setup) thread became.

Just stop ranting and enjoy the pics

Erm, waay off base. Its not a rant, i actually admire the setup. I just couldn't help but think back to when i was 15 and how having Gameboy was the luxury thing then. Computers were rarely in houses let alone two or three.

Now, technology is cheaper and easier to access...allowing people to get their geek on. Don't mis-interprete the statement, making me sound like a grumpy 60 yr old.

Don't have an updated setup pic yet, but just applied a MacStyle skin to my MacBook. I also tried applying a skin for the palm-rest/trackpad area but effed it up and pulled it off. There are a few tiny bubbles visible in the picture, but I got rid of most of them. Used the tip of a razor blade to poke holes in them and get rid of them.

I went with copper, and the Capricorn image.

My enduring memory of childhood is trying to get Sim City 2000 running on a 386 DX/SX (can't remember which). My dad, bless him, knowing nothing about computers, went out and spent £200 on a brand new Pentium processor for an ancient machine which it obviously wasn't compatible with. The sight of a man who doesn't know how to change a printer cartridge trying to swap processors was worth the £200 alone! :p

Hi kitki83, yes I do make money off of Second Life, that is why I do what I do and have what I have. Everything except for the PC (I started out with the PC) was funded with a few years of building and being a land baron on TSL/TG.

No offense, but can you guys have that conversation via PM or in another thread? Lately I've been getting notifications for this Post Your Mac Setup thread and I feel like I'm only getting to see pictures 1 out of every 15 posts. Let's either post pictures of setups, or talk directly about those setups.

He has this (http://www.marware.com/cgi-bin/WebObjects/Marware.woa/6/wa/selectedCategory?catalogCatID=240), I believe. It also functions as a screen cleaner so you can wipe stuff off of your screen if it gets dirty.

Here's my setup. If you search the threads...youll find my old setup (with a PC!) People got angry that I posted a PC in the mac setup thread! Now I can post legitamately.

Setup: 24" iMac, HK Soundsticks II, Dell 700m, 30GB iPod

Edit: sorry for the quality of the pictures. I took them with my 5 MP camera, but they were too large to be uploaded, so I went back to "preview" and resaved them at a lower quality...I don't know how to reduce teh resolution so for those of you with smaller screens, I apologize.

I use one from ShaggyMac, myself, that covers the keyboard and trackpad/palmrest area. Aside from protecting the screen when closed (as has already been mentioned), I primarily got one to keep dust from collecting on the keyboard and trackpad. I leave my MacBook open, sitting on an iCurve stand. I use the MacBook as a secondary screen, and have a 20" LCD connected as the primary. Got rid of all of my other computers and just use this setup (for now).
