Lovely, Arip. The new Dell displays sure look classy.
Whats the black matt thing, I assume its some sort of cloth, and where can one get one? I need something like that for my glass tables. Skin marks are starting to get really annoying.

Lovely, Arip. The new Dell displays sure look classy.
Finally, at least someone agrees with me. Many Apple fanatics on this site really don't realize how far Dell has come with their aesthetics, especially on the displays. I think they are great displays, both in looks, performance, and function.

Because who wants four Dell laptops? :D :p

What difference does it make what he needs it for? It would be a fine question to ask, if you could do it without coming off as condescending.
...he's just got more processing power. Don't be jealous. :p
Calm down there, killer. I wasn't being condescending. I was genuinely curious as to what he does with them, and why he chose all laptops over desktops+laptops. As you pointed out with my own past setup, I'm all for lots of comps. Don't jump to conclusions.

Their widescreens are fine, but Dell's 4:3 LCDs use rather poor quality panels with very narrow viewing angles. (This is why I recently went w/ HP for a 4:3, their LP2065 model being a nice Philips S-IPS panel, nearly identical to ones used by Apple.)

Finally got my Mac two days ago, loving it to bits, been waiting for this for months on end but finally got the cash together to buy it :D
Very chuffed, its a Mac Pro, 2.66 GHz, then I've thrown in an extra 3 GB of RAM and also 3 500GB drives. This is intended for recording use (audio, maybe video at some point too), hence the audio interface and Genelec speakers, but I'm using it for everything at the moment because it is just so good :D
Really strange, I get a beasty Mac like this, and all of a sudden my desk is clear (mainly because my PC from before is up in the loft now, and my laptop is in its bag). Can't say the same for behind/under the desk, but what I can't see doesn't exist :p
I've made the switch from PC's to Mac's (although its not going blind, used them all the time on my degree), and so far I can't imagine going back. I do have a Windows XP virtual machine on here.....but thats only until Myspace IM is released for Mac's or there is an Adium plugin for it. I only talk to one person on it anyway.
Enough rambling, here it is :)

Nice to look at awful to use. Better than a RAZR though. :)
this is a little off topic, but .......
I've got the exact same phone, and i bought it after using a RAZR before hand.
Mind you, the only thing i do with my phones is make phone calls and NOTHING else ... with all features aside, i find that the fact that my chocolate doesn't sync the address book with my mac was a big mistake :( although i didn't like the razr much, it at least synced ..
does anyone else here have an LG chocolate that has a solution with getting your phone numbers onto it? without doing it manually .... .... please PM me :)

Okay, after much hardware swapping, my 'lab' in the basement is set how I like it. (Just got the Studio Display a couple weeks ago.)
http://www.hurtley.org/Images/labsm.jpg (http://www.hurtley.org/Images/lab.jpg)
On the left edge on top of the desk is the headless PC server (running Windows Home Server beta, no keyboard, mouse, or monitor,) with my work laptop perched on top. Next are my daughter's Tangerine iBook, my Studio Display, AirPort Base Station, and PowerBook G3 (with WaveLAN card,) and Bondi iMac G3 (rev b.) Under the desk are my 'workhorse' Power Mac G3 (slightly upgraded, G4/500, 512 MB RAM, Radeon,) and a second G3 that is pretty much just spare parts now. The keyboard and mouse are on a KVM switch to let me switch between the Power Mac and the iMac. (The Studio Display really doesn't like being on a KVM, so it's just direct only to the Power Mac.)
http://www.hurtley.org/Images/labtopsm.jpg (http://www.hurtley.org/Images/labtop.jpg)
The AirPort base station is my 802.11b transmitter. I have it plugged into a switch (that the desktops are also connected to,) which connects to my main AirPort network via an AirPort Express in WDS "Remote" mode. My main wireless network is g-only, and encrypted. My b-only network is firewalled off from my main network, and open. I do it mostly to segregate the slower b traffic from the faster g traffic. (Even though it's open, it's not like anyone can connect to it anyway, since it's in the basement.)
The G3 runs Tiger, the others run Panther. (Although the PowerBook is flaky in OS X, it crashes constantly, even though it is 100% stable in OS 9. I've tried four different RAM sticks, including one that was the Apple-installed RAM from another computer.) All also have 9.2.2.
My 'main' setup isn't very photogenic at the moment, an eMac and a MacBook Pro both on a VERY messy desk with a mess of external drives, printers, and tons of paperwork.

In all my years being with Apple, I have NEVER seen that kind of LCD monitor before! I guess they weren't very popular?
It was their original LCD. 15", 1024x768, $999. The same basic design was used for three different 'model's.
The first (http://www.everymac.com/monitors/apple/studio_cinema/specs/apple_studio_display.html) was a dark blueish-gray that came out at the same time as the original G3s. It used Apple's older custom DB-15 video plug. (I have one, but its backlight is out, and it has some kind of display problems besides.) It also has an ADB plug that lets you make all of the display changes from within the OS (doesn't work with OS X, you have to use the manual controls there,) plus an ADB 'hub' in the base. it also has S-Video and RCA in (so you can use it as a display for a VCR or camcorder or something.)
Then came this blue (http://www.everymac.com/monitors/apple/studio_cinema/specs/apple_studio_display_blue.html) one when the B&W G3s came out. The only changes were the color update, and the move to VGA from the older-style Apple plug, the ADB plugs remained. This is probably why the B&W G3 has an ADB port. I have two of these. The one shown here, and one that has video corruption. (It works fine for an hour or so, then the screen slowly fades from normal to static.)
Then when the G4s first came out, they updated (http://www.everymac.com/monitors/apple/studio_cinema/specs/apple_studio_display_gray.html) it again, to match G4 Graphite in color, VGA replaced with DVI, got rid of the video inputs, and replaced ADB with USB. (Although this time, the stand doesn't have a hub.) One of my blue displays has the stand from this model, with its graphite color, and no hub in the base. (The link makes it sound like a minor upgrade, but it really was a major change.)
All three models came with both the stand you see in my picture (has height, tilt, and rotation (left-right, not rotating the display to portrait mode,) adjustments as well as a small 'picture frame' that lets the LCD sit on the desk. In some other thread somewhere, I have a picture of my 'lab' with the blue display shown with the 'picture frame' stand.
When the second generation G4s came out, this style got phased out in favor of the ADC 'clear lucite (http://www.everymac.com/monitors/apple/studio_cinema/specs/apple_studio_display_15.html)' studio displays. (The original 22" Cinema Display came out first in this new style with a DVI input, but the 15" wasn't updated to this style until the move to ADC.)

which laser mouse though, cos my ms (850nm 1000dpi) really does not like it, the cursor does not move, stick the explorer 3 on and its fine.

you're connecting it via VGA rather than DVI (better). You probably didn't switch inputs when you plugged it in with DVI. You need to tell the monitor use the DVI port instead of the VGA.

Word. Also, VGA sucks compared to DVI so you're really losing out on the experience of owning a nice monitor.

I got my 2407WFP on Thursday, but my Mac Pro hasn't arrived yet, so all I've got is VGA from my HP laptop at the moment... So far, I'm pretty impressed. I'm not expecting that much of a boost going DVI though, although I know it will be due to it being digital, plus coming from a much better video card.

Wow, I honestly didn't know that the ACDs had an external power brick. Definitely not a plus, IMO. Looks almost like the power brick for the Mac mini. It doesn't bother me too much, but if I ever was in the market for a big display, that would probably have some impact on my decision. I try to minimize clutter as much as possible and that wouldn't help.
Oh well, though, the next Mac I'll buy will most likely be a new iMac, so that wouldn't concern me, anyway.
That's still a really nice looking setup, though. I dig it.

The one on the pad is the MX Revolution for desktop use. The one facing the front of the keyboard is the VX Revolution which is a notebook/laptop mouse.
My guess is when one battery runs out he/she will flip to the other while it charges and vice versa.

to be honest, i bought the vx on a whim. i was curious to see how it compared to the mx, and it was on sale at costco for $35. for the time being, it just sits there.

The Logitech S 530 Keyboard & Mouse set only comes wireless. It is an awesome setup. I have had no problems with it at all. I like it much better than the Apple Bluetooth keyboard and mouse. If you get one, don't use the install cd that comes with it. Logitech just released new software this month for it, and you can download it from their site. I've looked at the Bose speakers. I am considering the Companion 2 & Companion 3 sets, as well as, the Altec Lansing FX 6021, M-Audio's, Logitech Z-2300, etc.
Veritas&Equitas -
The chair is from Officemax. It is actually Dark Brown Genuine Leather. I liked it so much I got two. One for me and one for my wife. You can see the back of the chair in front the iMac. I got a killer deal on them. Officemax has them on closeout right now. It is normally $179.00. They both rang up for $89.00 each. So, I got two for the price of one.

At first it looked really comfortable but then once I saw the back support... it doesn't look all that padded, but now that I see how thick it is from the two eye kind of slots where your kneck will be. It's quite deceiving. Looks wild!

Yea i love that setup so nice and clean looks really nice. Also nice mixture between Mac and PC.
Yeah I like using both , I would switch full time to a mac, but I can't justify the cost of a mac pro. And I need to support windows machines so it's easier to have a pc. One day I may get a mac pro and go for it, but not any time soon.
What drive/enclosure is that? I'm looking for that exact same thing so I can Raid 1 two 500gb drives!
Its a Proavio dvBox Pro it matches the mac mini very nicely, it takes two ide drives and uses firewire 800, great little thing, but noisy if you leave the fans in, I removed them in mine. More info here on my website: http://www.gordyhand.co.uk/dvbox.htm . There are other versions of it and you can raid two drives together or as I've done treat them as separate disks.
At first it looked really comfortable but then once I saw the back support... it doesn't look all that padded, but now that I see how thick it is from the two eye kind of slots where your kneck will be. It's quite deceiving. Looks wild!

The backs quite well padded it just looks like it isn't , the harness slots are in an area where nothing touches the seat at my neck so I don't have a problem with them. Its great for forcing me to sit properly as I used sit in a terrible position hehe.

Monitor is a Acer AL1912: VGA in and 1280x1024 - I want to upgrade this when possible.
Speakers are JBL creature speakers - very good speakers, look cool too.
Camera: Canon Powershot S2 IS.
iPod 40gig photo - with Seinheiser CX300 headphones.
MacMini (see sig)
Mouse: Logitech MX518, not perfect for the Mac, but better than the single button mouse that came with the mini.
Netgear Wireless router.
MacBook (see sig)
Out of sight:
Behind the monitor is a LaCie firewire HDD - 80gigs used for backups of the mini.
Also a drive enclosure containing the original 80gig HDD from my Macbook, used for backing up the home area of my MacBook
Belkin KVM for switching between the MacBook and Mini. Used to be connected to my PC below the desk, a Athlon 1.4Ghz with 512mc RAM running Ubuntu. That's not even plugged in anymore, mostly used as a physical barrier between the mess of wires and my kid.
Up top is a Lexmark X85 all in one printer/photocopier/fax/scanner.
The bike on the screens is my Kawasaki ZXR750. Mister Jobs and Mr Kawasaki duke it out for the money left over after the wife and child (and bank, and mortgage)

Its custom made by me from parts so they don't sell it as a whole pc. You may be able to source the parts, the motherboard is made by commell and is a lv-677, which is definitly sold in the USA. The case however is made in the UK and as far as I'm aware no where will ship them to the states.
Scan sell in them UK http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Products.ASP?CatID=7&FilterCategories=361&Thumbnails=yes in varying colours, the one I have is the cubit 3 , the manufacturer is http://www.hoojum.com , though I know they have stopped making at least some of their cases. Whether the company is still going I don't know.
Hope that helps.

http://farm1.static.flickr.com/183/479402094_e57a04aa00.jpg?v=0
Unfortunately I don't have a good photo of the whole setup. I usually use my Macbook all over the place, but when I do use it at my desk it sits next to my Dell Dimension 4600 desktop and Acer AL1916W monitor, Logitech G15 keyboard, and Logitech Z-2300 speakers (which usually end up plugged into the Macbook's optical audio out as I am constantly listening to music). The red and silver thing in the back is my Alesis Micron synthesizer.
More photos of the whole setup when it gets cleaned up and looks a little tidier.

So, the thread is "Past & Present!", so here we go!
This was from way back in my last year in college, June 8, 1998. Yes, that's the back of me. My bunk was the bottom one surrounded by a blanket/curtain to keep the dark in.
http://www.hurtley.org/Images/DormDesk.jpg
And, since it seems to be popular, to illustrate the setup...
http://www.hurtley.org/Images/DormDesk.png
As the cardboard box slowly crushed, the desk top slowly tilted down to the right. In addition to the PeeCee, I also had a PowerBook 5300c that I often plugged into the monitor. I had an old fashioned manual video switchbox to switch between PeeCee and Mac inputs.
Let's see if I can remember the specs of that computer...
Asus P2L97-S with onboard SCSI (wow, I still have the driver floppies for these.)
Intel Pentium II 333 MHz (I ordered all the other components, then waited a month for this processor to actually be released.)
128 MB, PC-66 SDRAM, 1 DIMM! (I had to pay a small fortune to get a single DIMM that was a full 128 MB. But I wanted to have future expandability.)
Matrox Millennium II PCI and Matrox m3D PCI 3d accelerator. Later upgraded to an AGP video card that escapes me. (I still have the Millennium video card in my server.)
SCSI ZIP drive and SCSI 4x CD-R drive. (One of the first in the dorms with CD-R.)
Some random 10 Mbit PCI Ethernet card.
Creative Labs Sound Blaster AWE32.
Thrustmaster complete setup, FCS Mk 2 (the ultra-high quality one,) WCS, and rudder pedals.
Mag Innovision DX15T high-end monitor. (17" monitors were a little beyond my means at the time.)
HP ScanJet 4s serial port, sheet-feed 4-bit grayscale scanner. (The little thing between the keyboard and monitor.)
Some decent quality Yamaha computer speakers.
I worked in a computer store as a technician, so I got most of it at cost. (Still had to save up quite a while to afford it all. I seem to remember it costing well over $3000 by the time I was done.)

Reading those specs brought back some really warm and fuzzy memories :) Is that strange... haha. Those were the glory days of computing for me. Nvidia was coming into its own, 3Dfx was king and AGP 2x was as cutting edge as it got. I, too, spent thousands on a PII computer that eventually got upgraded to a PII 350. I actually remember dreaming of having a PII 450 system with two 12MB Voodoo2 PCI graphic accelerators running in SLI HAHA. Ok, nostalgic moment over :p

heh, yeah. I was a graphics snob, and avoided the VooDoo chips because they only did 16-bit color, where the Matrox m3D did 32-bit color. Later, I did have an 'Obsidian II X24' card that was two VooDoo 2, 12 MB chips on one single PCI card. That was the ultimate... (I still have that card somewhere...) To think, that card was considered to be a power consumption monster, even though it didn't even have a heatsink on it, much less a fan. Compare that to the new Radeon HD 2900 XT which apparently can draw up to 215 Watts of power... Whew. My entire 1998 ultra-rig's power supply could only supply 235 Watts max.

You are a moderator so what you say goes and I am powerless against you. However, last page starts with 8651 and ends with 8675, with only 4 users posting their setups the rest is conversations about sketching/drafting software or what type of desk is pictured. I don't have a problem with discussing setups either, this thread isn't boring to LOOK at the PICTURES. It's boring to read about Ikea desks or isketch apps or whatnot.

Chrispy,
The desk, dresser, and TV stand are from Ikea. The other pieces are from various contemporary furniture stores. The chairs are actually original 1950s Eames. Ikea generally has a midcentury modern feel to it, so I'd say it's a correct statement. Thanks for the nice words.

Totally agree, man. I had an eMac as my first Mac and it's still my favorite computer I've ever had. Don't get me wrong, I love my Mac mini, but the eMac was just awesome. All-in-one goodness.
I've even considered just buying me another eMac, but I don't really wanna buy used, so I'm just gonna give Apple a little bit longer to update the iMac and if they haven't updated it by WWDC, then I'm most likely just gonna go ahead and get one of the current ones. Probably a 17".

I love that photo of Clifton Suspension Bridge. I try and get up there as often as possible. In fact, after seeing this, I think I will go for a walk up there tonight with my girlfriend.

Nice speakers, who makes them?
They are Altec Lansing MX5021 speakers. They are 2.1 speakers available in either black or white. The sub is also white and placed next to my desk, it's quite large you see. Great speakers thus the high price (£110 when I bought them a year ago) for a 2.1 system. THX certified also.

I hear ya. It's that time of year here as well - 6 exams next week:
"General Physics" - anything from the first 3 years of core courses
Radiative Transfers
Plasma Physics
Intro' to General Relativity
Classical Dynamics
Fluids
Going to be a loooooong week :(

although in my experience, the iSkin does greatly inhibit the clarity of the back lighting on PB and MBP keyboards.
I find myself having to remove it in low-light conditions.

The macbook doesnt have a backlit keyboard so it is all fine and dandy. Will be adding that to my list of what to buy now

6 exams in one week?!! I thought I had it bad with three exams three days in a row the week after next!! An exam on three years worth of core courses sounds horrible!!
I've got:
Theoretical Elementary Particle Physics
Atmospheric Physics and Meteorology
Laser Physics and Matter Light Interactions
Extreme Astrophysics
Solid State 2
Doing the whole last minute cramming right now, past papers, past papers, past papers - oh what fun. Then about 30-50 equations to learn for each exam, damn I wish they gave us formula sheets!!
I'm probably one of the very few people in this world that would ever say that they thought your modules sounded interesting! Apart from Radiative Transfers, that sounds particularly dull!

... very simple in that all is required is a usb light pointed at the mirror-finish logo on the back of the adc cinema display and voila a nice projected image on the facing wall, albeit flipped and the logo still projects onto the wall when the mac (under desk) is asleep which makes it a cool night light too :) ...

Sometimes it sucks to be left handed. ;)
Unless there's a left handed version...
And before anyone points out that all my setup pics feature the mouse on the right side, it's because I use my right hand when I play Halo, becasue the fingers on my left hand can't figure out which arrow key is left and right.

That is very true. Quite a few things are only right handed - lke hockey sticks.
Despite being left handed myself, the only thing that i do right handed is use a computer mouse. It has sort of been trained into me, helps with the mice problem too

Wow. What kind of desk is that?
It's a Bestar Embassy executive desk, bought from staples. It's very sturdy and plenty large but my only complaint with it is that there's no easy access to things behind the desk. I had to mount my power strip on the wall so I could plug/unplug things without moving the desk out. Other than that it's a fine desk :p
The side table is from Ikea, but I forget the name of it

So while I'm not left handed, I am an on-site computer technician, and often have to use the computers of southpaws. What amazes me is that I can switch to "lefty mousing" really easily. With reversed buttons and all. It really throws me for a loop when a customer has the mouse on the left, but the buttons are in right-handed mode, though. (As long as "click" is under my index finger, and "secondary click" is under my middle finger, I'm fine, regardless of which hand I'm using.)

There are plenty of left-handed hockey sticks out there, FYI.
I consider myself "left-handed" because I write with my left hand, but aside from that, I am very limited with my left hand. I throw and catch with my right, use a right-handed mouse, I use a right-handed hockey stick, play a right-handed guitar (picking with my right hand makes it a right-handed guitar, right?), etc.
