I started sticker-ising my MacBook, to make it slightly less inviting to a would-be mugger.

What a horrible idea.

I don't personally care for stickers, at all. Not on my Apple products at least. I'll admit, though, the girl who got her MBP through selling advertising on the back ended up with a really unique, cool looking machine. I wouldn't mind a nice laser-etched design.

yah its just personal opinion, but those stickers dont look good at all. I agree with the above post, the only way to make a computer look classy is a good quality laser etching. Too bad you have to have a mbp, pb or tower to do it.

I only apply stickers to Apple products I have more than one of... helps me easily tell them apart. Stickers are on my 2 iPod Shuffles, 2 PB batteries, 3 power adapters, etc..

The intention wasn't to make it look 'classy'. The intention was to make it LESS inviting to a mugger/robber. Anyway, I'm not in the 'just another Mac fanboy' camp who all want an identical shiny white machine that they are so scared of getting scratched that they take home & polish every night.

What true geek hasn't heard of the Model M? They were made by IBM (later Lexmark & Unicomp) in the mid/late 80's --> early 90's. The thing that makes them great is their use of a buckling spring setup underneath the keys, instead of a rubber membraine (most desktop keyboards) or scissor springs (most laptop keyboards). It gives the keys a much more tactile feel & means that you always know whether the key has been pressed successfully, as there is an nice *click* rather than a squidge of rubber. I'm not lucky enough to have a real Model M, but I do have a fairly nice buckling spring board from some Chinese company (thins has a DIN connector!).

I'm using my 15" MacBook Pro with a 22" ViewSonic monitor, so I'll post some pics for you. (Sorry about the crappy quality it's 4AM so low-light conditions and it was taken with my iPhone.)

How exactly is that old keyboard hooked up to your mac? did you use some sort of switch to get it to convert the old keyboard connector (whatever type it may be) to a USB signal?

I went to RadioShack and found a PS/2 to USB adapter for $15, hooked it up and it works great. I called around and every single person I talked to was convinced that I meant a Playstation to USB adapter, so it is best to physically go to the store and find one yourself.

If you find a really old Model M, you may run into another problem - the first ones came with AT plugs, so you then need an AT to PS/2 and a PS/2 to USB adapter. Luckily my Model M is a PS/2 keyboard.

I like it a lot, and as someone else said, the tactile feedback and loud clicky noise is great for touch typing, and they are supposed to be better on the hands, which is a constant concern with me because I am a professional writer and I type about 15,000 words a week.

It's all down to cost really. Nobody I know of makes buckling spring boards anymore, though there is the Matias Tactile Pro;

Heres my setup.

I got the Dell for free yesterday from the non-profit I donate time to. Its a Pentium4 HT 2.8 GHz, with 512MB of RAM and an 80GB HDD, as well as a DVD-ROM. We got over 270 of them from the community college (we refurbish machines and give them away to schools). Everyone got one, since we all pitched in and moved all these machines. I took it, dropped a gig of RAM into it, a AGP FX5200, and a CD-RW drive.

My Quicksilver G4 is a Dual 1 GHz G4 box, with 1.5 GB of SDRAM and a Radeon 9000 Pro card, with a 40 GB drive, and a 30GB hard disk drive, and it has the original 2X Pioneer Superdrive, and the Zip 250 drive.

The Quicksilver is the white monitor, the Dell is the black.

Had a Dell Inspiron 510m which is now sitting by my bin, It was running XP for the last few years but i've stuck Ubuntu on it for now just to mess around with and stuff.

Then back in June I got my first Mac ever and there's no way i'm going to switch back, never! It's the Black Macbook, 2.16 GHz, 200GB hard drive and I upgraded to 2GB RAM. I bought the wired mighty mouse and I'm backing up to a 250GB external drive.

I'm thinking about adding a Dell LCD and some speakers, probably Logitech's. I'm going off to university this September so i'd rather make my Macbook my entertainment centre than having a gigantic TV and hifi taking up all the space.

Way better than I expected, definitely the most pleasant switch i've ever made out of all the different Windows versions and Linux distros i've used, Mac is the epitome of awesome. Everything really does just work, awesome driver support, really sleek interface, it's the only OS out there that doesn't look like a train wreck.

The only little problem i've come across is connecting to my wifi network, I just get error message after error message, but seeing as I have no problems getting on the neighbours networks It's probably just my crappy Belkin router.

Apart from that i'm more than pleased, totally worth paying the extra few £100 for a Mac instead of just going with another crappy Dell.

Well first time posting my setup... just got a macbook a month ago, had the powerbook since 2 years ago i think... Look at my avatar for specs, not included in there is the WD 500gig MyBook Pro external drive and 22" inch Dell widescreen monitor.

http://homepage.mac.com/sgonzo2k/.Pictures/DSC00001.JPG

How is the resolution on the Dell?? I know it is 1680x1050, but since it is a 22 inch, are the pixels too big?? I would like to get the 24, but it is twice the price of the 22, so what do you, and anyone else reading this, think of it??

Had a Dell Inspiron 510m which is now sitting by my bin, It was running XP for the last few years but i've stuck Ubuntu on it for now just to mess around with and stuff.

Then back in June I got my first Mac ever and there's no way i'm going to switch back, never! It's the Black Macbook, 2.16 GHz, 200GB hard drive and I upgraded to 2GB RAM. I bought the wired mighty mouse and I'm backing up to a 250GB external drive.

I'm thinking about adding a Dell LCD and some speakers, probably Logitech's. I'm going off to university this September so i'd rather make my Macbook my entertainment centre than having a gigantic TV and hifi taking up all the space.

wow, what do you need all the 200gb+250gb for ?!

wow thats awsome news :) glad to hear that you like your mac.
not sure about ur wifi conenct issues tho, hope its barable!! maybe an airport extreme is in order :P hahaha

not going back to dell??? lol *rhetorical Q*

Well I found an uprotected wifi network called "Grandma's Broadband" so as long as granny doesn't figure out how to configure her router i'm all set :P

wow, what do you need all the 200gb+250gb for ?!

I'm going to stick Vista and Ubuntu on it just incase I ever need to go back to the dark side, so i'll use about 20GB each for that. The external's just for backing up, a 160GB would have have done for me seeing as i'm just backing up the Mac side of it, but for some reason the 160 was actually more expensive than the 250:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Western-Digital-160GB-Elements-External/dp/B000RQU0TS/ref=sr_1_2/203-2865508-6257555?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1185733029&sr=8-2

Though i'll probably make use of the space when Leapord finally ships and I start using Time machine.

That's the Griffin PowerMate, which I like very much. I've basically turned it into a tab-changing device—I bind it to the "tab forward/back" commands in Adium, Colloquy, Safari, Camino... basically anything with tabs. It's nice to have one interface for that, especially since the key combos to change tabs are different in EVERY app that uses them. I also use it for a few other misc things (iTunes volume control primarily). Plus, it satiates that "have a cool looking thing" requirement, a must for any desk. ;)

I personally think you need a little separation between your computer and bed. With my setup in my room I find it hard to use to my bedroom to "RElax". With my office now on the main floor of my house I can truly separate myself!!!!

Just need an Elevator or iCurve, a (much) larger desk and possibly an ACD in the near future....

There has to be a Chinatown in Texas, no? They're just cheaper in Chinatown and they have them in pretty arrangements.

But if there isn't one, just go to IKEA :)

Nah, there isn't a Chinatown. But there is an IKEA.

Sweet setup, i really like the bamboo (?)

Thank ya, thank ya. My plan is to get the desk replaced with a nice simple wooden one that will compliment Apple design and then create a psuedo "wall" of bamboo behind the computer. Once that's done I'm going to place my lamp beneath the desk and shine it up behind the bamboo. Should look nice once it's all said and done.

A lot of you have nice quiet macbooks / macbook pros with one or maybe 2 WD mybook pros sitting on the desk. How do you put up with the fan noise of them?

I have a macbook pro and the mybook pro is as far under the desk as possible and on a support to stop as much of the noise as possible.

I had it on the desk for about 5 minutes and couldn't stand it any more.

Also, is it so noisy because of the FW800? It was the cheapest FW800 drive I could find... My brother has a lacie fw400 and there is no fan noise at all.

I think that the mybooks are just loader than lacie, although my premium is not unbearable.

has anyone owned both the icurve and the elevator?

i was wondering whether the newer elevator (which doesn't look as good) is a good update? in particular, the icurve allows you to slide your keyboard quite far under the actual laptop, but the elevator doesn't seem to let you go that far underneath.

what are people's thoughts?

I'm not sure I understand your concern. I am able to slide my keyboard all the way under the elevator with additional room to place it even further back.

In any event, the elevator is a good all-round stand. It's priced well, closely matches Apple's styling, keeps my MBP cooler and improves general ergonomics (i.e. my neck is no long sore from always looking down at the screen).

Fair enough. I wouldn't exactly call it expensive though.

They're much cheaper in Chinatown (if the vendor doesn't rip you off). $2/stalk is expensive. You can get a nice bound arrangement of 10 (albeit smaller sized) with holding dish/vase for about $15 if you haggle and stuff. You can't do anything with the IKEA ones but throw them in together. They're usually already to large to bind into an arrangement.

I've never owned an icurve but saw one at a friend's house. I chose the elevator though because you can take it apart and pack it in a suitcase.

Why would you want your keyboard underneath the icurve anyway?

You can fit an external HD nicely under the elevator if you wanted to. Read that at the apple blog.

I have the 2005 iCurve model (I think they are still nearly the same) Yes, the keyboard fits under nicely, and it works great for both my 12 and 15 inch machines. My only dislike is that it is a little wobbly (i.e. hard to type on it when you need to)

What i meant was that under the icurve you're able to slide the top of the keyboard just underneath the lip of the laptop (cause the 'prongs' stick out further than the footprint of the base', but it looks like the elevators 'prongs' don't extrude as far out as the base than the icurve.

The reason i'm asking is that i have a very shallow deskspace, so the further i can slide the top of my keyboard under the laptop (while it's in use), the better.

thanks

If you want quality and don't mind paying an extra hundred for a nice TV of a certain size, I absolutely recommend Samsung. They are the TVs of all TVs for the time being, and I have literally not one bad thing to say about my 30" Sammy LCD. It's gorgeous plugged into my PowerMac, even over VGA... As soon as I get my DVI -> HDMI cable in, it should really look nice.

*homer simpson drool*
I won't even get started on how it looks plugged into a 360... jebus, the colors and the definition are next to none.

I'm sure you could.

But I can't. Had this basic set up/desk for 7 years now and it works extremely well. Doesn't really look nice, like these pristine, cold, featureless set ups, but everything here sits right where it is needed. My only problem is the giant Wacom pad, but I never liked it off to the side either, so the wireless keyboard just shoves aside and viola.
Can I get the source for the left wallpaper? Oh, & you might want to alter your sig - I'm pretty sure you don't really have only 9MB of RAM!

DOH! I make 9 MB work, tho. It's incredible!

The wallpaper was just sent to me as a file from someone in a chat. I have no idea where they got it, and I didn't ask.

Thanks for the replies on the suggestions for an LCD TV. Although I would want to choose an HDTV for my eternal monitor, I am scared. My MBP is running at a res of 1920 x 1200, and rhetorically the HDTV will not run at that resolution. Will it look weird having my eternal monitor running at a lower res than my MBP screen? Or will it kind of balance out because it will be a larger screen than my 17" MBP screen?

I wouldn't worry too much about the differing resolutions

Thanks for the replies on the suggestions for an LCD TV. Although I would want to choose an HDTV for my eternal monitor, I am scared. My MBP is running at a res of 1920 x 1200, and rhetorically the HDTV will not run at that resolution. Will it look weird having my eternal monitor running at a lower res than my MBP screen? Or will it kind of balance out because it will be a larger screen than my 17" MBP screen?

Thanksssss.

It would balance out if the HDTV were smaller than the MPB screen, but that's unlikely.

Yeah, I like that too - is it just a rubber overlay?

Update: Switched from a Macbook to a Macbook Pro.
And I haven't looked back since.

Specs -
2.16 mhz
2gb ram
100gb hard drive
256mb ati graphics card
Cwoar, 2.16MHz? My cellphone could run circles around that!

It's an Ergotron Neo-Flex. I got it on close-out from Office Depot, but you can find them on-line for about $60.

Here is my updated setup. I just bought a BT keyboard here on MR and put my MacBook into desktop mode. If I ever buy an iCurve, I'll bring the Macbook back down next to my 19'' LCD & use as dual displays.

Pics taken on iPhone.

My bedroom setup at my new apartment on campus (just moved in this week so the walls are still a little bare). Just added the 26 in. Vizio LCD HDTV and am planning on getting an up-conversion DVD player tomorrow. The only problem that I have now is the cable in my apartment is really fuzzy in all the rooms (our building was just built so there are bound to be problems I suppose.)

I'm happy with it. I guess one thing I would improve is I'd make the keys a *little* easier to push. That is really just a matter of opinion, though. Other than that, I love it. It is a very slick keyboard. How do you find the battery life?

I'd recommend mounting that surge protector on the backside of your desk, thus hiding a lot of your cables.....you've got a pretty tasty setup but what separates the good from the great in my opinion is excellent cord management

The thing is, I hate that desk because it's impossible to get behind it (there's no access to the back without moving the entire thing, and it's heavy as hell). I had to mount the surge protector there to make it more convenient to plug/unplug things. I am moving in November and will more than likely get rid of that desk completely.

How did you change the icon for your windows partition? It won't let me do that on my MBP...

I used a program called Candybar. Use it to change the Icon for Internal Drives - that will change both your Mac and Windows partition to a Windows Icon, then you can go to change the Mac partition icon back to what you want by hand.

Although I wouldn't put it quite as the previous poster put it, the aspect ratio doesn't look right on that (which worries me as I'm considering getting a 23" white Samsung for my Macbook). Is that a DVD being played on it through the Macbook? Or a separate DVD player?

Yeah, thats the normal 1st reaction, but then people examine it more closely, and realise that its not actually that expensive. Its quite a cheap set-up, and will be very efficient. Also do quite a bit of business from home, so you could call it a SOHO setup. ;)

thts fair enuf, how would u say it is compared to the mb keybord?? i hear their not bad. battery life so far is pretty good. its sitting at 82% after one month and 4 days. sometimes it drops lower if i accidentally keep it on but it regenerates a fair bit.
all in all a good kb :)
