I really hope you've got a decent backup procedure in place for that server as you seem to have everything on it!

Although I wouldn't put it quite as the previous poster put it, the aspect ratio doesn't look right on that (which worries me as I'm considering getting a 23" white Samsung for my Macbook). Is that a DVD being played on it through the Macbook? Or a separate DVD player?

nah trust me it is you can change the picture mode anyway to other settings but that is optimum as it has no black lines and the image is preserved in it's original aspect ratio with no distortion, even if that pic looks a little off.

it's just hooked up to xbox 360 for dvd, although i have mini dvi connection to my Macs too.

it is setup correctly at 16:9 for that movie, you sarky git

(just a bad photo, as stated)

That image is defiantly a 4:3 image, stretched to 16:9. Notice that the face is wide and not natural looking, that image should have bars on the side to keep the shape of the original aspect ratio.

I should have mentioned, I am looking for a good display other than the Dell. I'm very reluctant to buy the Dell based on principle.

However, I'd like to see closer/higher res versions of this setup, that wall mount just might be the thing that would do it for me.

I'd like to point out I cleared up quite a bit before taking this...:p
I'll try to return later, with an even cleaner picture!
Macbook Core Duo 2GHz, 1GB RAM(Needs upgrading to 2GB!), 80GB HD, 320GB External MyBook Premium, BT Mighty Mouse, Sony 19" 420GS CRT
And then there's the PC hiding in the corner, which doesn't get that much use these days. The speakers on the desk are used with the PC. My Macbook sound goes through my Hi-fi.
I'd like more stuff; like a nice TFT, but all my money is going on car insurance/university at the moment!
Seen some very nice setups in this thread! Kudos to you all... :o
Not seen: Nikon D50, and a random assortment of networking equipment.

Mark, I agree with the others. That is definitely not the correct aspect ratio you are using. You can clearly see the subject is stretched. You should be seeing black columns on each side of the image, as it is a 4:3 signal.

Latest setup:
http://www.mydarkmaterials.co.uk/misc/desk1.jpg
My room's just been redecorated and my dad's made me a desk from scratch. It's great: it's been built with hiding cables and peripherals in mind - there's a cable basket underneath, a slot to feed cables through and a cupboard that as-well as providing storage has two shelves in to put my external HDDs on (and my FireWire Solo).

The Wireless Mighty Mouse and LCD are new. The LCD's a 20" LG L204WT which features both DVI and VGA incase I should get a XBox 360.:D

Love it. Best, and neatest, setup I've ever had.

Looks nice, what do you think of the black back? I don't know if I'm too keen on it...

It does look like a dell somewhat but its classier, in that its slimmer and there are no vents....basically a simple sleek design. I dont mind it

Then again the imac is facing a wall so no one will see it. Actually thats a lie, people have been marvelling at how thin it is and actually go to the back to check if there's a magic trick somewhere :p

Overall though, would i have preferred an all aluminum back?...yes but nonetheless its a cool design. Things could be a lot worse.....

I remember buying a laptop style keyboard for the pc, it was bloody awful, cost me £35 and rattled like crazy! Every time you typed it was like the plastic underneath was whacking against the bottom of the keypad. Odd.

I'm glad they kept the chin - just wish it would say iMac somewhere on it.

Uhh, why? That'd be horrible from a design perspective. They don't stick "Mac Mini" on the Mini or "Mac Pro" on the Mac Pro. And the "MacBook" and "MacBook Pro" names are very inconspicuous, on the bottom bezel inside the notebook.

Logo and brand placement are important, but you never overdo it. Apple knows that. It's part of the reason why the Apple logo disappeared from the Command key.

Looks great. I don't want to sound like I am criticizing your efforts, just an observation…

Given Apple’s push to make the iMac thinner, then the chin is needed to house more of the inards, and will therefore not go away too soon. I do not think they could move stuff around on the inside enough to eliminate the chin, but hey, would look great if they could.

Also like how they show the side shot with the computer on a bit of an angle to use depth perception, and the black back of the iMac as well, to give the illusion of it’s thinness - oh it is thin, but the side view makes it look as thin as a cinema display.

And I got me a 24” as soon as the Ginza Apple Store opened Wednesday morning and I am happy I did so. I have run out of space in my little Tokyo apartment and did not want to wait for a new MacPro redesign or a mini-tower to take up less space, so decided to replace my original circa late 2004 PowerMac G5 with the new iMac (didn’t really and won’t need the power of a tower so iMac it was)

Will post pictures of my Mac family when I get home (New iMac, MacBook, G4 PowerBook - and my soon to be sold G5)

The more of these new imacs I see in actual places, the more I begin to like the looks of them. I was questioning the design at first, but I believe I can now say I like them. Maybe thats just because some of the new imac setups i've seen have been great.

And about the design of it and how people want a chinless imac. Well, after watching the disassembly of the new one I don't believe there is a chance that will happen with out changing the thickness, or changing the components like a smaller sized hd.

Thank you, To be honest i was a bit skeptical about the new keyboard, as you can see i have a logitec keyboard that i use to play wow, i was 100% sure i was going to replace the iMac keyboard and mouse with my PC setup. But as you said, the keyboard is a dream to type in. I love the style and feel. I also love the fact that I can slant it and wrap my hand around it.

That might change once i start playing wow on the Mac but for the time being i love the new keyboard.

I agree whit you, when I see the new iMacs in actual places the more I start to like them.

I'm still getting used to the new iMac. I saw one in person the other day, loved the keyboard. At times I think they're the best looking iMacs ever, but other times I kind of miss white, as the black and silver remind me of every other monitor.

Another thing that kind of bugs me is that the iMac no longer matches the MacBook or even the iPod (though I'm sure the 6th gen. iPod will match it).

Off subject, when do you guys think Apple will redesign the MacBook Pro? When will they upgrade the keyboard to be like the MacBook's/iMac's?

Except that it was like that on the last generation of iMacs and looked absolutely fine.

You should have gotten the 2007WFP rather than the budget E207 if that's what you wanted to use it for - the 2007 has composite, S-video, and VGA inputs in addition to the DVI that the E207 has on board.

I am so far. I've had a few issues, but most were anticipated. For example, I'm a Quicken freak and Quicken for Mac leaves much to be desired. I'm trying CrossOver so I can keep using the Win version. I've been using OpenOffice but it looks like the Mac version of that isn't quite ready for prime time, so I'm considering iWork.

What background image is that?

Yeah, I still think the white iMacs are quite classy but once I got them setup side by side I decided the new iMac is definitely sexier. The background image is from InterfaceLift. You can't quite see a big difference in the pictures here, but the new iMac's screen is substantially richer and brighter than the old iMac (which I already thought was a fantastic screen).

I see that you have a laptop and a desktop. What would you recommend to do buy a cinema display or a iMac if you did have a MBP?

It depends on what you typically do. I have always wanted to have two computers on hand because I love the mobility of laptops but also prefer the larger multi-screen capability of desktops, and I like to have a backup computer in case one goes down. I always say, though, that if I could only have one computer it would definitely be a laptop + large external display. If you're trying to choose between an iMac and a monitor for your MBP, that's a substantial price difference (unless you're talking about the 30"). Some people don't like the hassle of keeping things synchronized on two different computers, so that's something to consider too. I use a central file server to handle all that.

Rather than have a display connected to a laptop, I would much much more rather have a laptop and a desktop.

Even with a laptop running in clamshell, it's a FAR far far FAR nicer experience to be running a machine on your desk, even while you're out. I use SimplifyMedia, Azureus and some other 'open all the time' apps constantly in use. As soon as I unplug my laptop, these become useless as they all depend on external hard drives. However, I want to go outside during the kind of weather we're having at the moment and use the net out there, rather than sit indoors melting and turning pasty-white.

iMac + MacBook/Pro > MacBook Pro + ACD + Keyboard

That's a good enough reason. My laptop is desk-locked until I get an MP to replace it. Then, once again, the MBP will be mobile, as it should be.

I changed around my space. I had this crappy little glass corner desk, which I liked in the beginning but soon grew old because it was so easy to see the wires behind it.

Now I just got a plain folding table and a tablecloth for the time being, that way I have a cheap solution to have a nice clean setup.

Before:
http://farm1.static.flickr.com/62/175632074_28d94ddb3c.jpg

After:
http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1400/1107394589_f24eedb816.jpg

A couple of notes: 1, I know it is right in front of the air conditioner, but the fans are pointed outwards and dont actually hit the imac and 2, I'm not in love with the table cloth, but it was the only one i had lying around the house so until I can get a nice clean white one, this will have to do (notice the green wallpaper to help make it look more complete).

Oh, and I got rid of the regular computer chair and replaced it with an exercise ball, needless to say, I'm never going back to regular chairs again.

Oh, and by the way, thats a Halo 3 Mountain Dew can on the top of the desk. :)

I was thinking of doing a similar thing.
Is screen spanning/extending desktop standard in mac osx now, i cant remeber.

I've never owned an iMac without using a 2nd monitor. In fact, I've never used a computer at home or work that didn't have at least two screens in the last 4 years. I highly recommend it.

And yes, screen spanning has always been standard in OS X. It was restricted from certain low-end Macs years ago (iBook, old iMacs), but that hasn't been the case for a long time. You can do extended desktop on any modern Mac.

Haha. Me and my friend were fooling around, and we decided to build this ultimate setup. He realized that his Xbox 360 and new iMac was in the same room, and with a little help from me, we made his MacBook, iMac, and xbox 360 able to be used at the same time(but i would only reccomend using 2)

ok, a little update from the last page...

I hated that green tablecloth (which was like one of those plastic outdoor ones, very sweaty) so I replaced it with a light grey cloth i found...I like this so much better... I can't wait until the new ipods come out also, so I can get rid of that nano and replace it with a full sized one in a dock...

it's 65 (cm or in or whatever units they use). I'm 5'11"

What's with the roof tiles on your wall?

lol, my house is pretty old (like around 80-100 years) and that wood siding was the original outside front of the house, then at some point after that they added a front room and just kept the siding up for some reason, like they just tacked a room right to the front of the house. I used to live next door, so my whole life it's had this front room, i dont know exactly when they added it.

It's funny cause this house is full of all kinds of unprofessional craftsmanship, just as you would expect from a house that was built almost a hundred years ago by whoever owned the property. a post in the basement was just a piece of beachwood that a previous owner told us was dragged by horse to put in here. When we put on an addition to the back of the house and we tore down the old walls, it seemed like it was put together with wood scraps. Apparantly it was also owned by the Genovese mafia here in NY.

Only the power cable, but in my current room it's not a problem as my iMac is in an alcove so you can't see it behind it.

I'm moving to Rickmansworth on the outskirts of London next week to my new studio flat and have no idea where to place my iMac, so will probably end up putting all wires through the hole then, as they'll probably be on show more!

Figured I would finally add mine to this.

Current setup is Macbook Pro (15", 2Gb Ram), Mac Mini, 2x 22" Samsung Syncmasters. One PC (on the floor), connected to a cheap 19" AMW mounted on an arm.

All 3 machines, and 4 screens use the same keyboard and mouse via Synergy. Current plan is to sell the MBP in the very near future and replace it with a Mac Pro, adding another 2 Syncmasters to give me more screen space and cleaner appearance.

nice setup, how does synergy work

It's brilliant! I couldn't manage without it. I have the server installed in the PC (purely because the PC box doesn't do anything else and never moves), the macs have the client set to autoconnect when they are switched on.

I was skeptical about it before I gave it a go, and the only reason I did was because I didn't like any of the mac keyboards (I have a thing for everything matching!), using synergy the keys are properly mapped out which is a huge bonus.

Not bad. I'd like it to run cooler, but having it up on the elevator helps a bit. If it wasn't on a stand, I'm sure it would start burning holes through the desk :)

I'll put it in my bag, just as I did with my g4, and it will get so hot it shuts off and drains the battery :(. You almost have to let it sit for 30 minutes before you put it in a case or it will heat up seems.

I have a question about the ball. How is it using it as a normal desk chair? Is it comfortable? etc.

The ball takes some getting used to, but I never want to go back to a regular chair.

Now, granted, it will never be as comfortable as a nice big padded, form fitted chair, but I noticed myself constantly slouching and leaning back and getting in as close to a laying down position as possible in my old chair. I didn't like this because it made me feel stagnant and tired. It is perfect for those who have to be or find themselves in front of the computer for long periods of time and want to get some exercise in.

The ball forces you to do a few things:
1. keep your balance and stay more in tune with your center of gravity
2. use your midsection to keep you seated
3. keep your back straight and have better posture

On top of that, there are a ton of exercises to do on the ball, so when I'm bored or have nothing to do, I'll just roll back and do some crunches or whatever on the ball, then roll back up and continue to use the computer. Sometimes it's fun to just play some iTunes and bounce around on it, it's just added exercise during times when I would normally not be getting any.

Search google, there's tons of sites talking about how good it is (health wise), sorry for being so long winded, but I really enjoy the ball.

Very nice looking. I like glass, but being older now, I prefer the warmth of wood.

Loving that desk and setup Mr. Donkey.

This is the one reason that sways me away from getting glassy desks. The TV stand in our loungeroom is black and glassy and even though I barely touch it gets frustrating having to look at a hand/finger print so I have to clean it off straight away. I can't imagine the amount of finger marks a desk would get. I wonder if anyone makes a matte glassy desk.

edit- oh snap that's also a very nice chair crouchingdonkey! How is it for your back, does it stop you from slouching etc?

It's really bad for a everyday use desk, but it being black you'll see dust very quickly. Nevertheless I think his black desk is awesome.

Thanks for the great comments about my desk guys! I find that dust gathers on your desk no matter what it's made of. The questions is, do you choose to ignore it just because it's less visible (but visible all the same), or clean it? That's my rationale for going for the black glass top! Hehe! It's a small price to pay for aesthetics I think.

Thanks! It's the Aeron chair by Herman Miller. It's amazing! The best chair I've ever sat in I think. It's designed to prevent you from slouching, and it's helped a great deal. I was developing neck problems from laptop use- having to tilt my head down. Hopefully, what with the iMac, desk and Aeron combo, that won't be much of a problem now!

Thanks. Done!

Yeah, I'm not that impressed with their furniture in general. But when I saw this desk, I nearly needed a change of undies! I bought it from the Festival Walk store. I think it was around HK$2,300, so not too bad really.

Just moved into a new apartment. I just wish that I could have put the keyboard right next to the desk, so I wouldn't have to turn my head so far to look at the screen when doing MIDI work. Overall, I'm very happy.

Very nice. And you'll get an all-round tan from all the screens in your set-up. I like the fact that your set-up doesn't look like a museum exhibit and shows that you actually work on it. :)
