Just got a new iMac because my macbook died. When I move rooms ill get a better picture and try and organize things, this is just temporary.
Cool, but why is your MB laying there open? Are you trying to save it, or salvage it?

Could you share some details on your mousepad? It looks rather hard, like plastic. I would like a large one like that and the firmness is equally appealing. Thanks a lot!
Just had my new iMac delivered today!

I dont know what to do with it. Im keeping the hard drive and creating a portable external with it. Im using the RAM in the new iMac. Maybe later on in life when the logic boards get cheap ill try and fix it. But for now its just going to collect dust.

Were you running your MacBook with the lid closed??? Do you think it died because the MacBook doesn't have the power to run your ACD properly??? Or what happened to it??

It's actually a placemat, which is made of a thin plastic. I had to trim it down a little, as it just seemed too wide sitting there on my desk. You can find these sorts of placemats in most household goods stores.
The texture of the mat works well with laser mice. I'm guessing it doesn't work at all with optical mice, as my Mighty Mouse doesn't respond on it. Just something to bear in mind if you also decide to go for a placemat.

You should look into getting an Icemat.
They are the best with optical and laser mice.

I'm happy with it. I guess one thing I would improve is I'd make the keys a *little* easier to push. That is really just a matter of opinion, though. Other than that, I love it. It is a very slick keyboard. How do you find the battery life?
a little easier? I hate apple keyboards... so much.
the new imac keyboard is brilliant to type on, but couldn't look much worse...
then there is the new wireless keyboard.

It lost the battle to a glass of milk. It ran the ACD perfectly fine with the lid closed for 16 months. Ohh well.

DVI-HDMI is the true digital way to do it, but it will look crappy cuz it will not output the true resolution of the display, only 720p and so on. Video looks good, but not text. I had to resort to the dvi-hdmi for my vga connection on my tv has an issue, so now everything is a slight blue tint. I wish i could fix it, but its a hardware issue, and i got the tv so cheap it's not worth sending it in, but VGA is the best way for the tv.

Honestly I've seen them before and people swear by them. Then I saw someone had one here and I thought that may be a nice idea. I switch between the ball and the chair to be honest, but find the ball to be rather comfortable. I also do roll around on it when I've had a glass of wine or two...that makes for some great YouTube posting fun if you get my drift.

The French don't know how to make beer. It's Belgian. And please don't forget that. ;)
Stella doesn't really sell as good as Maes or Jupiler here in Belgium. So be sure to check one of those if you have the chance. (If there's no Jupiler, I'll drink Maes. If there's no Maes, I'll have to go for something more heavy or I'll just drink some water...)

Just search Ebay for Cherry mini keyboard. You want to get one w/o a Windows key because they are older and have better switches.
And if you do, here is how I mapped my keys:

I do all my coding on my laptop, which was fine when I had a ThinkPad T20 (awesome keyboards) but now I have a MacBook I've been looking for a good keyboard. I've got an old buckling spring board (Nan Tan Computer Co) but I just did some searches on the HHK & it looks perfect for what I want because I don't really want a full-width board. Could you briefly explain the difference between the HHK, HHK Pro & HHK Lite (2)? Because there seems to be a huge price difference between the different models?
The HHK Pro 2 is the better of the bunch. It has mechanical clicky switches with a spring, but it is not the buckling spring like the Model M. HHK Lite uses "high quality" rubber domes to bounce the key back up. These kind of mechanisms tend to feel a bit spongy.
They are both supposed to be great to type on. The cosmetic differences between them are the Pro is a little smaller, and it missing the arrow keys. A coder wouldn't really miss them at all, though. Plus the Pro is the one that can ship with blank keys caps.
Both of them have the control key where the caps lock usually is.
If you are going to buy the Lite, check out GeekStuff4U (http://www.geekstuff4u.com/advanced_search_result.php?currency=USD&keywords=keyboard&search_in_description=1), they have the Mac version complete with Apple keys. It's not a knock-off either.
I'll most likely buy a Pro 2 anyway.

They are cool, but the space bar is even smaller to make room for the damn Windows key - a waste for a Mac user.

:D I always love it when I see people using Fliquo as their screen saver. I think its just the coolest thing ever. I've been using it for six months or so now.
By the way, whats the story with the light? Just had a spare powerbook/mbp lid lying around and put a light behind it?
Someone I know bought a PB from craigslist but the LCD was broken. Another person on craigslist was selling an LCD with lid for $80. Can't go wrong there! I ganked the lid and made a light because I felt like it was high time to be a dork!
I don't really turn it on much, it does however make for great "mood" lighting if you get my drift. And if you don't then I'm sorry. ;)

How do you like the 20" so far? It looks great on the desk, and in my opinion the 24" might just be a little to much. Do you have any regrets over not getting the 24"? And finally, what is it that you like best about your new computer?

To dispell boredom this afternoon I set about building a stand for my MacBook out of some scrap 1"x1/4" lengths. I might sand it all down, neaten it up a bit, then prime it, spray it, & gloss it, or I might be lazy & just leave the bare wood & joints. At any rate I'm going to stick some rubber on the bottom & along the lip at the front.

That is hilarious AND functional. Good work. I look forward to seeing the finished product.
On a similar note, have you considered trying metal work and maybe bending some aluminum to create an even better looking stand? I may try my hand at building one for shiggles. It won't replace my Elevator, though.

Love the keyboard. Personally, I love the Model M mini's (space saver). The numpad is useless to me and I hate having to reach over it to get to my mouse (or, in my case, the classic Logitech Trackman Marble (http://www.uhhh.org/~lherzog/blog-images/logitechtrackmanmarble.jpg))

Yeah the design is intentional and its the only design for the MX518 mouse, not a special edition or anything :p
Hey I don't like the design either but in terms of ergonomics and performance, its one of the best mice I've ever used. In fact, when I need to get some serious work done (like tons of excel, word, movie editing, photoshop, organizing, etc) I unplug my Mighty Mouse and connect my MX518 to my Mac, its just a much better mouse and the on-the-fly sensitivity switching is great and not for games (it sucks for games) but especially for Photoshop. After using it you just learn to live with the ugly "gamer look".

The subwoofer won't effect an LCD monitor, but it will effect your hard drive (I assume the tower is on the other side). Subwoofers are meant to be on the floor and sound much better there!

I bought a Razer Copperhead for my PC, but it worked perfectly on my Mac out of the box, no drivers or anything and the on-the-fly sensitivity buttons work too. I installed the Pro|Click drivers on my MBP once to see if I could get extra features, but no luck. I have never plugged it into my PC for fear that something might be written onto the mouse's onboard ROM or whatever and make it not work w/ my MBP again. My experience :)
Some semi-poop cellphone captures of my setup follow, PC on left, MBP to right, display serves double-duty for both machines. I'll take better photos later on.

Nice setup! i take it you record you own music?
How does your iMac handle the tracks and plugins in Protools?
I don't really write my own music - however, I do cut my own drum tracks for whatever band I'm currently in at the moment. Most of my work at home is freelance recording and mixing. I'll do some vocal or guitar tracks here or there and then mix projects at home. Of course now, when I want to cut drums for something, I'll usually have the client book one of the larger studios around Boston.
The iMac handles everything really nicely. I've maxed out the Pro Tools LE 32-track count along with 8-10 aux tracks using up to 4 Altiverb 6.0 reverb plugins, a bunch of McDSP plugins and the standard assortment of included Digidesign plugs.
Then I'll usually run my stereo drum mix, kick and snare, bass, and vocal through my Rupert Neve compressors and re-record those audio files back into PT as I like to use one of my Neve's for my 2-mix compressor.
Anyway, this is starting to get a bit more complicated for a Pictures post :D

Only modern Mac in that picture is the quad 3GHz Mac Pro (http://pix.blakespot.com/view/computers/macpro/IMG_8796.JPG.html), indeed. Interestingly, just as I forgot to include my G3 iBook in the panorama I made back in early 2005 (http://www.bytecellar.com/qtvr_2005.html), I forgot to include my 2GHz MacBook Pro in this most recent panorama (http://www.bytecellar.com/qtvr.html). It's way too much of a pain in the butt to take the whole series of ~30 shots again, so hopefully when I reshoot in another two and a half years, I'll include whatever laptop I'm using at the time!!
These are all the machines I've got setup at home. I've a a shelf of various unused units (8-bit Ataris, spare IIgs's, Amiga 1000, etc.) that aren't in the pics.

Well, things changed... I was offered a cool job as an art director at a small local agency.
Here is my office setup. They gave me this nice 2,3 ghz dual G5 with 3 gb ram, but only had a 6-8 years old crt monitor to go with it, which best days unfortunately are gone - so I decided to bring my 21" Eizo from home.
83664
Which gave me an excuse to buy a shiny new 2,8 ghz iMac for home use! :D
Amazing machine so far. Since I don't have a window behind me I do not notice the glossy screen. I turned the brightness all the way down and calibrated it a little with the calibration tool in the system preferences, I can definitely recommend it for graphic design use, but of course there are better quality monitors out there.

The practice (architecture) where my girlfriend works had a fire downstairs, so there was some smoke damage. The desks don't smell at all and we have one each. Ironically, they are both ex-fire doors that have had 4 legs put onto them.

Also sold my maudio delta 1010 i had previous for not much less than i bought it for.

 (remember that it is lighter in here - but the exposure is low)
Bear in mind that I did just buy this display though. We'll see how long this lasts - although saying that, most of my work is on the computer... so I don't have an excuse to get messy really.

Yeah! I was about to buy the 2.8Ghz Extreme model but since I got the PS3 for my gaming needs...the 2.0Ghz version will do the job...mainly for CS3 and running VMware for testing purposes.

Just bought an Apple Display - 23". After calibration - it works much better then with default settings.

What in the world does that mean?
But you do have a nice setup. Are you hooking up the PS3 to a TV with HDMI or to that PC monitor somehow?

I would certainly like to think so ..
If there was little or no difference no one would buy calibration units like Spyder 2 Pro etc.

Thanks :D I like it a crapton more than the glass. It's so much more warm and inviting, much less sterile and harsh...I'd like to get one of them purdy little thangs your sig tells me you're waiting on ;) I LOVE the amount of desk space I gained, plus getting rid of my mouse pad was nice. It's just a much better feeling now to sit at my desk :)

hey man, is that just a regular table? The reason I ask is because if it is I'd like to see how you manage your wires and stuff, at this point I have to use a table cloth to hide the mess of wires under my table...could you post a pic of the underneath?
