I like your room because has no desk, no definite workplace. I like the Futon.
I personally have to wait to post my set up. When leopard comes pre-installed is when I get my first mac. I'm making the switch!:apple:
Thanks. I'm looking to get a coffee table not to use as a desk, but to let my mbp sleep on it, along with actually using the dock for the iPhone and such. Could be used nicely for putting my laptop on to watch movies or put my feet up while watching tv and such.
holy ****
someone on here who actually uses a laptop as a laptop instead of putting in on one of those stands and using external everything.
haha yeah, thats exactly why I got a laptop, err "notebook".

So my roommate had a monitor he wasn't using. Figured I'd put it to use.

Yeah, my desk won't really allow to have a side screen setup. I kinda like having a top and bottom setup though.
It's the newer but base model Macbook Pro (15.4", 2.2Ghz, 2Gb, 8600GT). Great little machine. ;)
The speakers I got off Newegg.com. I forgot the exact model name but they're the only white/silver ones on Newegg, hehe.

It still puzzles me as to why people buy ACDs - £400 for a 20" monitor is ludicrous when you consider that you can buy a 22" monitor, also with an LG/Phillips panel, for less than half that price. I mean I would rather have dual 22" monitors than a single 20" monitor for the same price, but maybe that's just me.

Well, they look pretty.:)
People buy a lot of different things that cost more because they look better. Cars, clothing, furniture, etc. etc...
All that matters is if the design factor is important to you. And if someone spends the whole day working with his computer I can understand that a couple 100 bucks for a prettier thing to look at is worth it.
Other people buy Diesel shirts for 100 bucks when they could get shirts at H&M for 10 bucks. To each their own.

Yes, I suppose some people will always be willing to pay twice as much for an inferior product, simply on the grounds that it 'looks nice'.

Sorry, no pics, but I'm sure you all know what a G4 MD and a 21" monitor look like. I'll get a G5 some day, maybe when I win the lottery or something.

I can't. I work on a white iMac g5 anywhere from 10 to 15 hours a day doing layout and I think it's pretty fugly. Oh how did we ever manage the beige boxes of the 80's and 90's? LOL

Because you focus on the image displayed on the screen, not the bezel that surrounds it? I couldn't care less what the casing looks like, as long as the picture is nice. That's why I have & love a 20" SGI CRT on my desk.

About the ACDs... I've got one, and I absolutely love it. It ended up costing me about 200 dollars more then the similarly sized dell or samsung or whatever monitor but a whole lot less then an eizo or nec screen with comparable color accuracy, a S-IPS panel and an even backlight.

That's precisely my point - the panel is a 20" LG/Phillips yet you can get a monitor with a 22" LG/Phillips for half the price. You are paying Apple £200 for the smaller panel & with a bit of aluminium around it.

I know that LG produce different ranges & hence qualities of panels, however the price comparisons that I was making were between the ACD & products like LG's own Flatron range & Dell's Ultrasharp range, which use EXACTLY THE SAME PANELS as the ACDs. If you were to buy a 30" ACD, it would have the exact same panel as a 30" Dell Ultrasharp.

All the ACDs use S-IPS panels which is the best type on the market. Many of the other monitors you see use TN (worst type) and some use PVA (better but not as good as s-ips).

Nope, ACD use the OLD version of the S-IPS panels, while the newest Dell monitors use the newer version of the S-IPS panels. Some Dells still ship with the older panel, but they are in the minority. The majority of the S-IPS panels in the new Dells are better models than the ACD's, as they haven't updated theirs in a few years.
Bottom line is that Apple has really fallen behind in their ACD line.

Alright everyone... I know I need a new desk but other then that... my setup is really done. I don't want an LCD display because I use my laptop as an actual "laptop" too often to spend the money.
Specs:
17" Macbook Pro
-HD 1920x1200- glossy display
-160 GB HDD @ 7200 RPM
-4GB 100% Apple RAM
-GeForce 8600M GT graphics w/ 256MB
So for those keeping score, that's a 100%- FULLY LOADED 17" Macbook Pro

I can't speak for leftfoot, but I have both a MacBook and MacBook Pro (original Core Duo models) and I can't imagine being confined to the MacBook after getting the MacBook Pro. I love having the higher resolution screen on the MBP, mainly. The MBP itself is only marginally larger physically than the MB, but I can get so much more done on it because of the larger screen and more natural keyboard. Then there's all the perks like the backlit keyboard, etc, that just are really nice to have at times. I like the MB just fine, it's a great computer, but I'll take my MBP first any day. Since I never use the MacBook any more, it has become my wife's main computer.

im just thinking about whether i should get an ACD as its fair expensive... almost half the price of my mac. or should i go for the dell 24 inch... it will be 200 dollars cheaper for me. i really like the ACD for its striking design which matches my macbook pro, its firewire & USB hub its HD resolution... but the dell has more inputs. also should i hold out for the supposed new ACD around the corner. i think they will have HDCP and the better displays.

Bose is really overrated. The FX6021s are really good. Great highs, lows, and mids (which I find that most cheaper PC speakers lack). Plus they look awesome.

Nice iMac. G3 ftw.
Hi all
I have been enjoying this thread, seeing everyones set-ups. Here is mine. Its in my bedroom. I have 2 "blackbooks" one is connected to a sony 23" monitor (the last model dedicated to computers that they made) Just yesterday I got the cords/adapters needed to connect that blackbook to my Sony 32" Bravia TV that is in the unit next to the computer. For now I am just going to watch movies on the hard drive connected to the Blackbook on the TV. I still prefer to pull up my nice recliner to the monitor and do my "computer" work. The cabinet below the computer section holds a My Book 500GB HD. When those doors are open I just tuck my feet into the cabinet and recline in my chair. My second "blackbook" is one mobile. I use it with my iLap on the bed or out on the balcony.
I hate cords so I have them all well hidden in behind the wallunit. Next year I am planning on replacing the windows desktop downstairs in my office with a Mac Pro. That will takeover from the windows desktop that is now a server for the 2 blackbooks. All this is serviced by the airport extreme down in the office. There is an Airport express connected to the receiver above the TV so that I can have my itunes playing in my bedroom.
Holy hell that's a nice house.

Extremely poor analogy. A £20,000 car will have a different engine, transmission, chassis, suspension, etc. to a £10,000 car. However a £400 ACD has exactly the same components under the aluminium than a £200 LCD has under the plastic.
Is "because it looks nice" not a valid reason?

Almost right, but not quite
Many car companies use the chassis, suspension, engines etc across several models.
Car companies which own different Marques will use standard set ups:
A Jaguar x-type is basically a Ford Modeo with a different body.
The Skoda Octavia is the same car as the VW Passat

I would love for you to explain this to me
I'm sure you would, maybe you should do a search on the forum because the difference have been outlined by the professionals that use these monitors every day and have to know the differences because of their job.
These threads are normally about the differences between dell and apple, but other monitors that use the same panel are the same.
as I still don't see the justification for paying twice as much to get an aluminium case on the same panel.
To be quite honest, if you can't justify it, then you don't need the better display.
I'd like to see you back that claim up by showing me where I can find an equivalent quality (that's a very important requirement) 20 inch widescreen display for around £199.50 (half the apple cost).
EDIT: There is a good thread called "A Creative Pro's Guide To LCD Screens"

As I have already pointed out, the ACDs use exactly the same panels as many other, substantially cheaper, monitors. There is therefore no functional difference between the ACD & the cheaper competitor, especially from a 'professional' viewpoint where performance comes before how pretty the bezel is.

How about a 20" Dell E207WFP for £191.40 (http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/ProductInfo.asp?WebProductID=503582)? So essentially your choice is this - you can have 1 panel in a fancy aluminium case, or two identical panels in black plastic cases.
Hell, for <£50 more than the 20" ACD you could have a 24" Dell 2407WFP-HC (http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/ProductInfo.asp?WebProductID=653472) or a 24" LG L245WP (http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/ProductInfo.asp?WebProductID=644783) whereas Apple currently seem to be charging £600 for a mere 23" - not to mention that it doesn't sport any connections other than D-SUB & DVI - the larger, cheaper, identical-quality 24" Dell offers both of these plus composite-, component- & s-video inputs.

That monitor has a 6-bit TN panel. Crap for color reproduction and accuracy. The 20'' ACD has an 8-bit S-IPS panel.
Anyways, enough ACD bitching.

Apple's monitors are overpriced compared to the competition; however, there is more than just a pretty housing that differentiates them from others.

That is might nit-picky, isn't it. In general, most of the cheaper displays do not use an S-IPS panel. There may be one out there, but I have better things to do that research every last panel. Beside, this thread is about showing off mac setups, so I dont see the aggression towards people with ACDs being warranted.
I would buy an ACD if the ONLY difference was the outer casing AND it cost 2X as much. I stare at it all day, why can't it be aesthetically beautiful?

Oh, and for reference, writing in bold doesn't make your point any more valid, in this case it has only served to highlight just how little you understand about it.
I normally wouldn't have bothered posting about it but you have decided to post in such a way about something you don't fully understand, that I felt I had to.
I'm not going to to explain in detail (I get paid for doing that to my clients, I don't feel the need to do it for you gratis) but I do believe that in the future you should do some research and be sure of your facts before slagging others off regarding their choice of purchase.

It's nothing to do with 'blindly defending something', it's to do with having a working knowledge of the devices, why they differ from each other and why people (and large companies on a budget) buy this display.
I don't like people blindly spreading misconceptions about things they don't understand.

Sorry about that, I must have pressed delete instead of backspace. What I am trying to say is.
Everytime somebody says that a certain monitor is as good as or better than an ACD, most people come back with the argument, "it's got a better panel".
You said there is a lot more to a monitor than the panel. But you only said that to someone who was criticising the ACD and not the one's who are supporting it.
This has blown out of proportion tbh.

I understand that perfectly, but also realise that essentially every other component that goes into the monitor's creation are worthless in a comparison of two monitors sporting the exact same panel, seeming as at the end of the day it is the image on the panel that you stare at, not the bezel.

I'm sorry, I've not read anyone who said that and that's why I didn't say that they are the same panel. The truth is that (and I quote Jobs here) "other people use the panels we throw away" and that even when they are the same panels, they are not the same standard. It's in other components, such as the backlight, where the cheaper models fall down.
It doesn't matter who is supporting or opposing which panel, what matters is that they are not the same quality, especially in the case where Mr. Eden linked to poor quality displays and tried to pass them off as the same panels and same quality.

Do you have to spout your lack of understanding so confidently and your inaccuracies so factually? It does your argument (that is already very weak) no favors at all.
I don't have any problem with you not wanting to buy an ACD, I only have a problem with you trying to make the people that do buy them look like idiots for doing so.

Here is a link to the background: http://pixelgirlpresents.com/images/desktops/Jamie_Roy/allUtencilsFixedOnYou1600.jpg
And the external is an OWC Mercury Elite Pro 500GB.
AND NO! I have no student loans, and I would most assuredly not spend them on anything of this sort.

Well here's mine, 2.2Ghz MBP, BT KB & Mouse, mStand, Karman Hardon's, 320Gb external hdd, 20" Viewsonic, G4 Power Mac, some crappy Altec Lansing speakers I found in my cupboard, (which I'll prob put back in there cos they're awful), and an absent iPod Video (most of which is in my sig anyway).

love the Sawtooth Roker. Is it the stock processor? Are you going to bootleg Leopard onto it?

Just a little heads up, I'd suggest giving your wires a little slack. It looks like they are tightly connect as you can see the cords just pull right down.

It's just got the stock 400Mhz it came with, I may get a CPU upgrade for it, but not before maxing the ram (I've only had it a few weeks, so it's not very interesting at the mo, I just ordered a SATA controller for it today, it's really hard to find stuff for it down here). It's running 10.3 now, very nicely, so I will prob stick with that, I'm far too impatient to bog it down with fancy-pants graphics etc
Freudian slip? :p
:D Umm... yes, woops. You can't tell me though, looking at the Speakers & the sub side-by-side, that you haven't wondered what field of work the Soundsticks' designer was in prior to getting their job at K/H, I mean H/K.

Thanks, I will pull them out a little. They aren't as tight as thy look.
