I say "jam" and I'm from the U.S. "of A"

Anyway, I was referring to the lack of an external display.

Well, I have an ACD connected to my MB as I find the screen too small when sat at my desk for hours...

Also, I don't think that a laptop offers the best neck positioning for long term computing.

These two reasons prompted me to buy a 20" ACD and I love it. I use my laptop as a laptop when I am being portable... going home (parents), on trains, in uni, that kind of thing... although the iphone makes some functionalities of the MB redundant (why email - text only - on the MB when you can on the iPhone, for example?).

Yes, but you can't take a desktop with you.

One of the great things about the MBP is that it can be both a desktop replacement (with or without external peripherals) and a mobile computer.

^^^ everyone has different tastes and ideas. I got burned earlier for saying that I likes someone's setup because there was no huge external monitor hooked up.

Look at the simplistic way mdwsta4's rolls. In the nude, Apple Laptops are a work of art that I feel becomes diluted by adding more and more peripherals.

Yes, and different uses, too. He may not need anything else for what he uses the computer for where others may need the additional "toys" to do their job or to enjoy their computer more, etc.

Yeh - the 20" ACD at home is needed as the 13" MB is too small for some things. It's unfair to say that I am not using it as intended... are the people sitting with the MBP sat at a desk all day using it as intended? I use my MB all around the world and in cafés, hotels and trains (and stations).

I fully agree that there is no point buying a laptop if you're only going to ever use it around the house, but it is only logical to have a decent keyboard/mouse/monitor/stand for your laptop whilst you aren't out-&-about.

mdwsta4
Oct 23, 2007, 08:50 AM
yeah, i get that and i wasn't trying to piss people off.
i am actually planning on getting a wired apple keyboard (for the number pad) and a BT mighty mouse since i will be working from home more often, but the 15" screen is adequate for spreadsheets for work and photo editing on the side.
that said, i'm on the road 60% of the time, so having some crazy large home set up doesn't make much sense to me. but again, that's just me.

cheers

No sure I agree with that, I really miss having a laptop. I don't miss it because I can't take it out of the house (although, that is nice), I miss it because my imac is on my desk and that's where it stays. I used to love taking my 12 inch Powerbook downstairs infront of the telebox, out in the garden with a cold glass of beer in the summer and to bed at night.

I think there is a massive point to buying one just for using it around the house. I didn't realise this until I was without one.

Although, I do agree with this...

Definitely, no matter how you use your laptop - a wireless mouse and keyboard completely transform it. It's great.

As much as I love these setups, does nobody have paperwork?
On the majority of desks there's maybe enough room for a sheet of A4 paper but I'm always needing enough room for multiple folders and sheets of paper.

This is my setup. Now, I know many people are wondering what the point of getting a laptop is if it is hooked to an external display, mouse, and keyboard all the time. Well, it isn't always hooked to them, only at the end of the day. For the most part of the day, the MBP is always with me, whether it be in my bag, on my lap, on a desk, or in a coffee shop. I bring this thing everywhere. I got the external display, though, because I'd rather edit video on a 22" monitor than on a 15". That is my reasoning. Hope ya'll enjoy!

I have one (but in black) and wouldn't buy it again. The composite makes it really light but also chips and stuff easily. Bring it up the stairs, I banged it a little bit. And also when my heat was broken and the repairman was here, he chipped the pain off the edge on the bottom of one side.

Next time I would spend more money and probably buy a nice galant desk with this table top:

I have the galant at work and it's a lot heavier but much sturdier.

I realized that when I installed 10.4 after I got my iMac.
The main reason is that the connectors on the iMac Alu is at the right side of the foot, and my external drives does not have cables long enough to reach to the iMac if I had it to the right of the external display..

But there must be some other reason too, and I think that the menu bar have a significal role to the screen layout. Just look at the apple to the left, I guess it would feel pretty strange to have that in the "middle" of the screens. :p

Thanks,

No way! I love them. My Uni. library back in Boston had them too and they're great. I love snuggly in a large comfy chair and the mini desk this great for a macbook or a giant cup of latte.

I think we should have a new thread of "what your setup REALLY looks like" as opposed to all of these posed shots that look as though you people really do live in a freakin' museum!

Now that new camera has arrived, I will have to take semi-decent shots of all my stuff, but for now I am playing with Photomerge;

I didn't want to mention the name  I removed all the holders that came with it (for CDs, magazines, etc.) and used the metal plate connecting the two uprights (under the desk) to attach a huge power strip with surge protection.

Hi! I recently joined Macrumors and looking through this thread there's some great setups! Makes mine look like crap. >_> Err reading back on this, apparently people put their age too? Ok, I'm 18.

Picked up my first Mac in August, Macbook! (specs in sig) The desk is crap, and soon I'll replace it. 19" Dell LCD that I'm hooking up with the mini dvi cable I ordered. Should be here by monday. Plus a Nintendo DS and Ipod Nano 2Gb. I plan on picking up some logitech 5.1 speakers, a wireless mighty mouse, 500gb external hdd, and a copy of leopard (still running tiger) once I get the money together. Won't be long. :)
http://img237.imageshack.us/img237/9973/mbned4.jpg

This is my TV and Wii/Xbox360 along with my previous desktop PC. (specs in sig) It's a pretty good PC, although it's rather loud, and it just can't play the latest PC games well. So I'm giving it to my little brother as his first computer once I pick up an external hardrive. I'm using it for backup right now. Eventually I plan on building a new gaming computer. :)

Thanks! Actually, I built this desk myself one Saturday this past summer. The surface is comprised of four 1x8" white pine boards; they are glued and screwed to a frame of 1x2s that runs around the edges and has three additional cross-supports running front-to-back. Four basic metal legs hold it up. The only storage I have is a separate rolling filing cabinet I got from Staples years ago.

The varnish on it is a nice matte satin; however, it's very soft and I think I'm going to have to refinish it. It soaks up just about anything, so there's some stains on it already. I left my headphones sitting face-down on it for a couple hours and came back to find two black circles (from the foam ear protectors) soaked into the varnish.

I love your setup! What made you upgrade to the new iMac, if I may ask? To me, I don't see the value in ditching my 24" to get the new one - but I'm guessing you saw some value - was it the speed?

I had an opportunity to sell my white one at a great price, and get the EDU discount on the new one since my wife is still a student. Plus, I got the free iPod nano since I bought it during back-to-school season. After selling the nano, I actually made $50 on the upgrade. Since I like getting new shiny things as much as possible, I jumped at the opportunity. Not a necessary upgrade by any means, but since I had the chance I took it. :)

Wow, that's awesome! So you think it makes more sense to change your computer more frequently than normal? Because in effect, in 4 years my white iMac won't be worth very much...so I guess it makes sense to upgrade if you have a nice offer.
