Yes, my friend, Dell and everything that they make sucks (except for the displays).
My whole office uses dell's. They have been good to me.

I just received my second Dell LCD (the first one had a bad right side ... pink pixels everywhere; just on the right side???). 2005W ... nice monitor. Feels cheap compared to an Apple LCD, but it's much cheaper when on sale (even after the lowered price on Apple displays). The ability to flip the display and having multiple inputs are nice options (especially in Tiger).
It's way to bright though ... nice for movies, but when working late it can be a bit too intense.
I'll post my new setup after i move ... living alone well be a nice change for this digital geek. :)

At last I have decided to post a pic of my setup. This is the old version (when life was simpler) as the 'new' is not good... I have bits of kit all over the study now getting ready for some eBaying.
Old Mac Setup (http://homepage.mac.com/gdallison/macold.jpg)
I am pleased to say that the PC laptop has now been given away to some sucker... oops donated to charity.
The new 'new' version will hopefully include a new display so I can retire the old style cinema display.
Nice... i didnt even see the powerbook the first time.

You're right. It's the wife's 12" powerbook hiding under there. I have to keep the thing up to date with software updates, etc. and she uses it to play mahjong, and we had such high ideals of her learning things when we bought it in 2003! She's starting to use the computer a bit more now that we have Tiger installed as she finds dashboard very helpful. She has a few world clocks open to tell her the best time to call our friends from overseas.
I have a 17" PB too but it's stuck in the carry case for now as I have no room for it. I wanted to eBay it but, it took a bad dent to the corner which wipes its resale value even though it still works like a charm.

In the spirit of a past and present macs, I decided to post the following pic of the macs we use from the first (switch) machine to the last. I am not going to include the now broken PC which is sitting in the corner waiting until the garbage collection on Monday.
http://homepage.mac.com/gdallison/macsthumb.jpg (http://homepage.mac.com/gdallison/allmacs.jpg)
Ganymede is a Rev A 17" PB which was the reason I switched to the mac. I had a case of the "I gotta get me some o' that" syndrome so inherent when you become a Mac user. It has taken a bad fall to the left corner which has damaged its lustre but not its wow factor.
Leda is my wife's 1Ghz 12" PB that we got her to learn how to use computers with... so far Mahjohngg is the top application used, alongside Dashboard's world clocks and temperature.
The laptops just float around the lounge so we can check emails and surf while watching TV or keeping watch on the baby thanks to an Airport Extreme hiding behind the monitor.
Jupiter was my Christmas present to myself which I bought on the way back to Australia when I stopped off in Santa Monica. I dumped the 1 button mouse for the PM as I came across a good deal on the MX1000 and I have to say it is a cool mouse.
Since we bought so many macs, we had to come up with a naming theme to handle them on the network... "Jennie's 12" G4 PowerBook" and "Graeme's 17" G4 PowerBook" was not the way to go...
Do any other members use a "theme" to name their machines? Any other examples please?

i do, although i broke it by naming my mini 'mini'
Ex-main computer (PC) is called 'desty nova' with a 200 gig drive with 2 partitions 'koas' and 'junkyard'.
G3 is called 'ido'.
A Vaio C1 i used to use (i should work on getting linux to work again on that one) is 'alita'.
The theme is based on 'battle angel alita' or 'gunm'. A manga i really enjoy reading.

I named it bob for the following reasons: 1) Bob is such a cool name! [though I'm happy its not MY name!] 2) Spongebob Squarepants!!!
When I get a Mac or a new computer, I dont know what I'll name it...
My iPods names: iPod and Shuffle

My Powerbook is "Mario" and my iPod is "Luigi." My PC is "Bowser" and the SSID on my router/WAP is "Mushroom Kingdom."
My fiancee's laptop is named "Peach." Her 4GB iPod mini (in pink, no less) is "Peach's iPod."
I've got an HP that I'm considering dropping Linux on to rebuild as a fileserver. His name will probably be "Toad." If I opt for Windows 2000 Server (which is a possibility), it'll be "Bowser-Jr."
My sister and gramma both have computers in the house (and on the network), but they have boring names.

I used to.
My 12" iBook is "Hanyou" (japanese for half-demon).
My PC is "Youkai" (japanese for demon).
My iPod WAS "Oni" (japanese for ogre).
But I got my PowerBook, and named it Disaster Area (although that's liable to change), and renamed my iPod to Katana, so we'll see.
I'm trying to think of a new naming theme for everything.

My G4 PB 12" looks just like the one in all the other photos....sexy... :)
I have a B&W that is sitting in a closet folding proteins. Not elegant, but functional.
I just put together an old PM 8500 (which was my very first personal Mac... got nostalgic) that I got on eBay for $0.01. I want to take a picture of it! It's so beige!
I paid:
PM 8500 = $0.01. + $18 shipping
4 GB hard drive = $16
OS 9.1 = $0.00 (miraculously still had it from way back when)
ADB Mouse + Keyboard + VGA adapter = $4
15" Dell Monitor = $1.00 (yard sale)
Grand Total: $38.01
When I bought it new in '96 it was $3000!!!!!
Ahhh depreciation :o
And the whole beige thing really goes well with my apartment's wood panelling
LOL nice a good shopper just like me. :D

Thanks for the kind words guys!
I absolutely love it, it's one of my best investments ever, and it just works!
Had barely any issues, except for yesterday when Safari wouldn't load unless I turned off then back on the Airport ...
Oh well, besides that it's been wonderful, seamless, I love being able to just lock the screen, the display will turn off after a minute, then I can leave downloads going and all my documents and privacy is safe!
The screen is beautiful and bright, and this thing can handle anything (even the fairly menial tasks recently, been really busy with work and school) but am going to edit a movie later on, I'll see how that goes!

Well, I have a PC [but want to get a mac...just dont have the $], and I imagine you guys don't want to see it [although my setup looks really nice]. These guys here are making it too hard. I just took all the cables going down, had them go down in one spot [behind a leg] and then used twist-ties every 6" or so and tied them into a nice bundle. Then, the ones going across, i put them under the glass, and taped them to the bottom of the glass. And, I had some going diagonal, so I brought them down behind a leg, and my desk has a little panel between the legs, so i tied them to that. The only wires you see are 2 nice neat bundles going straight down.

Oh well working hard for it will just be as rewarding. I'm peeved at those whom have an old 733Mhz G4 PowerMac and wanna charge $800Can used for it - you cant even run GarageBand at full throttle with it.
Not too much longer before I post my setup.

My first computer that was actually mine was a Compaq Presario 5340; 400Mhz AMD K6/2, 92 or 96MB RAM (I can't remember exactly), 4.0GB HD (upgraded to 30GB HD), 24X (I think) CDROM, later upgraded to an 8x4x32 HP CD Writer. The first computer my family acutally owned (and still does) is a Compaq Presario 5000t. Intel Pentium III 733MHz, 128MB RAM, 20GB HD, CD-ROM, CD-RW, 17" CRT, Windows 98 SE. It used be nice, back in 2000. But now it constanly crashes and my mom doesn't want to get a Mac so it looks like we might get a Dell in the near future. At least it will better than what we have now.

Its because our $CAN has been falling to around 70cents US. That and most people in Canada that have an old Mac want to upgrade & try to get the top most dollar for it. Doesnt help that the many authorized retailers hardly give fair price for trade-ins and match equal pricing for used machines. Win for the seller (pre owners too) & loose for the buyer. This is in Toronto, and even eBay doesnt help.
No worries makes it better for me to save a little more for a brand new machine & helps Apple make those sales.
bishopduke, thanks. Had a peaceful day and kids were good to me.

Based on what the Apple LCD (connected to the G5) is showing (http://forums.macrumors.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=24222), that's more likely to be an Avid keyboard.

Thanks for clairfying; my mistake. I plan on buying the FCP keycaps one of these days. I'm not sure if I'll put them on my wired or wireless keyboard though. I wonder if FCP 5 has any different keyboard shortcuts compared to 4.5.

I'd say the Avid Xpress DV keyboard looks pretty colorful.

compare that with your FCP keyboard (pictured here with a Contour Shuttle Pro V2:

I guess it's more pastels on the FCP keyboard compared to more saturated colors on the Avid one.

October 1994 - PowerMac 7100/66 8MB RAM, 250MB HDD, CD-ROM, 15" Multi-Scan Monitor, LaserWriter Select 360, MS Office, QuarkXPress
My roommate nicknamed it the Death Star because it obliterated everyone else's computer. Gotta love edu discounts. Loved everything about it, especially the CD-ROM drive which was pretty trick at that time. HATED the keyboard!!! POS!!! I ended up selling it in early 1995 after I graduated college, thinking "What do I need with a $4000 email machine?" Big mistake :(
Switched to the Dark Side in late 1996 due to work, grew increasingly frustrated in early 2002 when I wanted to get into video work and couldn't just plug my camera in and get it to work.
April 1, 2002 - PowerBook 667, 512MB RAM, 30GB HDD, Combo Drive
Took it out of the box, powered it up, logged in and was editing video off my camera within five minutes. Never looked back and still use it as my main computer. Waiting until after WWDC to see what new comes out before thinking about upgrading to a current model.
Also assorted iPods per my sig.

Saturation is a good word. The Final cut keycaps have a larger color range because of the green, which is my favorite color. Media Composer does have green enter button for what it's worth.
I don't think logickeyboard will have different keycaps for Version 5. I don't think they've changed at all in the last few versions. But that is pure speculation. I bet if you emailed them and asked, you might get a response.

It just looks like the G5 that close in the pic. As you can see the keyboard slides out, so I sit quite a distance away from the tower. Plus I have a nice buffer of wires to tell me when my feet and/or my chair is too far in.

I really like how you have the external HDDs arranged under the sideways bookshelf, and I like raising the machine off the floor a few inches because it should decrease dust collection a little bit, but I sort of doubt the structural integrity of the furniture. To answer some of your quesstions,
No, those aren't snake skin boots, lol.
Good eyes Rod Rod! I flipped the bookshelf on its side to see if it would work and I too was wondering if it could hold the weight. Only way to check it out was for me to sit on it. I proved that it could withstand 10 PowerMacs on it. :o
Yes the camera is for iChat and as for the performance boost over the iMac 800mhz, gee my guess would be 3-4 times. Just for fun I ran all the prgs in my dock at once,Word, PowerPoint,Excel,Mail,AddressBook,iCal, iChat,FireFox, Safari,iTunes (playing), iPhoto (3000 pics),iMovie (playing),iDVD,GarageBand, StickyBrain,WireTap Pro and the activity monitor still said I had 1gb (of 3gb) of memory left which was 2x what the iMac had in total.
The delivery company is aptly named, "Same Day Delivery". The PowerMac was shipped on a Wednesday and it was delivered on a Wednesday. Not counting the 3 weeks it took to get from California to my home just outside of Toronto.
The wife will tell you that I was waiting outside for all 21 days, lol.
I really did the slideshow to bug my PC buddy, he always said us Mac geeks are nutty and I wanted to prove him right. Guess who now owns the old iMac, lol. Long story how I made him see the light, will tell at a later time.

My old setup:
2000- Toshiba Satellite Pro 425CDT (damn fine machine, sturdy as hell)
I know what you mean about the satellite pro - I have a 440 CDT from '97. The thing is a quality benchmark - built like a tank. Just refuses to die though it only has a P 133 MMX and 80 MB of ram. Is now the baby's play computer and it is not phased a bit by her typing technique. I love my 15" Alum. PB, but I think the keyboard would come apart under the kind of abuse I've witnessed. I'm sad that my 440 CDT is limited to only 140 or so MB of ram because it appears to be so over-built as to be going strong decades from now.

any pictures?
Thanks for asking. I'm afraid that the pictures would be quite lame - just pictures of the stuff in my home office... which is a great space with some nice wood and a great firefplace, and a stereo-type soap opera office wetbar thingy that gives a good "I'm a heavy drinker" impression (and some terrible wall paper from the last owner) but the G4 PM just looks like any other G4 PM. The PB roams the house. Kitchen counter, dinning room, etc., so it's a moving target. That said, I'll try and snap a picture or two sometime this week.

i've never had to deal with toshiba cs (took me awhile on that abbreviation :o) but it had several issues and best buy was--less than helpful about it. long story short the power supply wouldnt get current from the wall and the battery was drained (ended up losing all the data on there cause they wanted $200 to back up data onto a cd ) and shipping it to the repair center some keys got damaged/came off/whatever, so the service center refused to repair it because it had been "abused." but it worked out in the end--made a switcher out of me and my mom ended up with a nice hp lappy that best buy gave us in exchange for the dead toshiba...yeah, toshiba stuff is generally good but errm...not buying any laptops from them anymore. 'cept that new libretto looks oh so sexy....*slaps self* </rant>

I picked up this nice little UMAX Mac Clone for $10 at a PC show. Got a free mouse and keyboard too. Not a bad machine at all I popped in a SMC 10/100 Ethenet PCI card I had in there. It's running Mac OS 8.6 and I think it has 90mb of RAM or something. Pretty sweet if you ask me...and only $10! :D
When I bought this I also got an iMac DV Graphite 400mhz/DVD/FW for $40 and there was a Macintosh TV (Black) but I didn't have the money :p
Enjoy! :D

Here's what's in my house right now. It's really spread out right now, as I'm about to buy a Powermac, so right now isn't the best time for pics. But here's what I currently have in the house (Not all for my use):
1 15 inch Powerbook with 1.5 GHz processor 1.25 gigs of RAM.
2 15 inch iMacs both with 800 MHz processors
1 20 inch Apple Display
1 Apple Airport Base Station
2 Apple Airport Expreses
1 HP Laserjet 1200
1 HP inkjet 3820
1 Epson Photo 820
All the printers are hooked up to the network, which has as cable modem hooked up it. That's the current setup, which I'm sure will change over the summer...

http://homepage.mac.com/tvwriter/.Pictures/MR/060405-1setup.jpg
I have the 23" Cinema Display connected to the PowerBook right now because I'm designing t-shirt graphics (Illustrator) and editing some DV (FCP) on it. I use the dual G5 for high definition video editing and DVD creation. It's great how DVDSP is just about as easy to use as iDVD.
I'm glad you found the antenna helpful in your situation. If one is in range of an open wireless access point (such as a library), it's cheaper to buy a high-gain antenna than to subscribe to dialup, let alone broadband. The trade-off is reliability because when the connection goes down on the free access point, there's nothing you can do (unless there's another open access point available).

I wish Dish Network would have done that. They just ran it one along the outside of the house, starting on the giant switch on the side, and then went straight down, and around to my sisters room [dual tuner box...closest room], and the other went back up to the roof from the switch, in the gutters, all around the house, and then down to my room [another dual tuner]. He drilled a huge hole through the foundation to get to mine, and I have a giant black cable coming in...but the sideways radio station poster covers it nicely ;)

You're welcome. Once I'm more settled in I'll post another update.
I don't know what exact dimensions I should have used in designing the t-shirt graphic. I just that I did it in Illustrator using a standard letter-sized page. Everything is anti-aliased so no matter how much it may need to be scaled up or down, the images will be perfectly smooth. The t-shirt printer will have to scale it to the right size if necessary. The logo I made is based on the NASA logo, but with four different letters (the acronym of the group I'm helping).
It's great to save money, and when the money saved goes into a fast computer, that fast computer helps you save time (and therefore money?)

I have an eyetv 410. I think it is great for digital terrestrial television but the signal reception can be a little sketchy at times. By moving the antenna by just a few centimeters, you can lose the signal. Once you find the 'sweet spot' it is great.
Recording is good as well. Allow about 2 gigs for a movie, you can then compress it to H.264 and throw it onto a cd. I use Quicktime to do this.
The good thing about my setup is I can be watching the TV on the PowerBook and surfing / working (non productively :p) on the G5. A real must have for people with 2 macs.

I really, really like mine. It came with Photoshop Elements and I've been using it to resize images and stuff. I haven't really played around a whole lot on it yet. OS 8.6 is pretty cool. I'd like to update to a newer version of QuickTime, though. Anyone know where to download a newer version of QuickTime that would work on 8.6? I tried VersionTracker, but it takes you to a broken link on Apple's website. I've been using Mozilla for a browser and I plan to get it wireless here in a couple weeks, probably. I've really been enjoying it so far.
Before I got my Lombard, I seen someone selling 2 brand new Wallstreets in the original boxes and everything and if I'm not mistaken, they were still sealed. I wanted something newer than a Wallstreet, though. That's why I chose a Lombard. Plus, it came with the original System Restore disc, Photoshop Elements, and 2 batteries.

True, have had a ton of major updates in the past year. I might as well tell you the story of my life in the world of Apple, so you will have something to go along with the pictures.
I got my very first Mac, a Blueberry Clamshell iBook, four years ago, when I was fifteen. I bought it from a woman in my neighborhood who had it in her garage sale. The killer: she bought it from someone else, never used it, and she sold it to me for $20! It had OS 9.0.4 when I got it, I used it and hated it, but I updated it to 10.1 a year later. I was actually trying to trade it or sell it for a Windows laptop for a while, because I really never liked 9.0, but once I got OS X, my entire outlook changed drastically. I upgraded the hard drive from the stock 3 GB to a 40 GB in the summer of 2003. I stayed on 10.1 for a little over a year, until I bought Panther when it was introduced, but sadly, something happened to the video a few months later. I woke it from sleep one morning to find the screen filled with a bunch of lines and colors. Since it had become such an integral part of my schoolwork and my hobbies, my parents graciously gave me $400 toward a new 800 MHz iBook G3 (which was $799 on the discount page at the time), when the iBook G4's first came out.
I used to have just my iBook and a lot of desk space, until I decided to buy my first desktop Mac last year, just so I could have something with some expandability (something to play with, basically). I traded the Clamshell to RGunner for a loaded Power Mac 7300. For a little while, it was just my 7300 and a single CRT along with my iBook. That stayed as my main setup until a friend gave me a Biege G3 that he had sitting in his garage not being used. I gave that some upgrading, and it stayed in my setup along with my 7300 until my school needed a computer to use for the yearbook committee. I took the 7300 there and brought it back this past December. Meanwhile, my iBook G3 had one of the infamous logic board failures, DHL lost it in transit back to my house, and Apple replaced it with my present iBook G4.
I had kept the 802.11b AirPort card from the Clamshell, thinking I might find a use for it. In January of this year, I worked out a deal with a member of another forum to buy his B&W G3 from him for $50 plus the AirPort card. The day before I sent him the payment, I was telling one of my friends at church about it, and he told me that he had a B&W sitting in his closet taking up space, and I could have it if I wanted it. He gave it to me, and I canceled the other deal. I gave my friend the AirPort card as some sort of payment for his generosity.
I set up the Beige in my sister's room, and I put the B&W in mine. I maxed out (or came pretty darn close) the B&W in just about everything (including a 500 MHz G4 processor), and it ran like a dream. I bought a Radeon 9200 for it when I got my 15" Studio Display, so I could run dual monitors. I upgraded it to Tiger the first day it was available, and it ran that like a dream. Then, it happened....
In May, I was browsing Craigslist, looking at the different Mac systems for sale, and I came across one that just about made me scream. I found a guy in Miami selling his Dual 1 GHz MDD G4 and his 17" Studio LCD for $850. I sent him an e-mail as fast as I could. As it turned out, I talked him down to $800 plus shipping to Tampa (whch came out to $825 total), and that is my present Mac, along with my iBook G4. Since then, it's only been small upgrades, like another GB of RAM and a 16x dual layer Superdrive. Now, I have a network (just in my room) of a 7300, a B&W, an iBook G4 and, of course a Power Mac G4 (my sister has my Beige G3, but that doesn't count). I don't plan on upgrading to anything else for a long, long time (of course, I didn't plan on most of my upgrades to this point either :p ). I am really loving the power of this G4, and I won't at all mind being "stuck" with it until I buy an Intel Mac in a few years.
Anyway, that is my story thus far. I hope I didn't bore you too much. ;)
This is the earliest picture that I have of my setup. This was with the Beige G3 and the iBook G4: here (http://forums.macrumors.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=25599&stc=1)
Next, it was replaced with the B&W: here (http://forums.macrumors.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=25600&stc=1)
Then, I set up dual displays: here (http://forums.macrumors.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=25601&stc=1)
And finally, today: here (http://forums.macrumors.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=25602&stc=1)
All of these pictures were taken within the last 7 months, the earliest (the Beige G3) on January 4th of this year. So, yes, I have gone throught a ton of changes, most of them within the last year.

Right now, video is just a personal hobby. However, I do a LOT of audio work for different organizations I'm involved in. I hope to get into the video/audio field professionally someday.

Hey, my Applications folder has iWork in it... is that normal? Does Tiger come with a trial of iWork? If I buy iWork, should I remove the iWork folder that's already there? Or did I just receive a free copy?
This is a temporary setup... :D

Right, I do have the Kaoss Pad and the dual cd player there, as well as a total of 20 mixing channels on my desk. I also have a rack with a few EQ's, some compressors and amps next to my desk (on the right side) along with another 10 mixing channels. Everything is piped through two 12" Gemini GSM 1250's on either side of my setup. I do most of my audio work and all of my video work on my G4. I haven't really gotten into video besides basic stuff until recently, because my most powerful computer was my iBook up until a month ago. Now, with the Dual G4, it's a little easier to get into it.

20 outboard channels? So are you running a loop then? If they're mono your only using 6 channels (stereo: Kaos-2, CD player-4) and your EQs on the insert/sends? I guess i just don't 'see' the process. I've been making music with the Mac for quite sometime and don't really use outboard mixers unless im recording real instruments. Different ways of working i guess.
Check out osxaudio (http://www.osxaudio.com/) if you haven't already. :)
Those Kaos pads are fun ... i've been meaning to get an Air FX, but they're getting harder to come by.

Yeah, I noticed that too with the iWork thing on my new iMac G5. The version on my computer doesn't say it is a trial version, it works just fine and never prompts me to insert a key. I will just keep it there until somethings says I have to buy it.

The way I have it set up, I have my iBook, my Power Mac and the cd player taking up four channels on the board in the middle of my desk. I have that board feeding to two channels (left and right) on the console on the right. I have a channel for my mic, a channel with a radio feed and a channel for my iPod also on the console. That leaves me with six open channels for anything else that I might need (depending on what I'm working on). I have the Kaoss Pad set up in a loop on the second console as well as a second line from the Power Mac (in case I want to bypass the main feed). The main output is fed to the rack, and therefore to the speakers, and I have two group outputs (left and right) sent back to the Power Mac for recording. I can also switch the record line to a feed from the rack, if I need to add anything else in.

That's understandable. I actually started out with the audio equipment and added the Macs to the system, so I never had the opportunity to be in a software-exclusive environment. :)

Thanks.
I'm using the bigger screen with the PowerBook because I'm putting together a DVD and having a big screen helps. I've encoded the video assets on the G5. Both machines are connected by ethernet so file transfers are pretty fast.
Motion (the application) runs a little faster when one (relatively smaller) screen is connected, compared to one big monitor or two monitors.

You're welcome. Well if you think about it, less pixels = less strain on the GPU and CPU (Motion taxes both). I have a 9600XT at the moment. Yesterday I submitted a proposal that would get me an X850 XT (well it would belong to a production but it'd be all mine to use). Hopefully that'll come through.

(when I first got the powerbook, I thought it was freaking huge, and I'd never get used to it, but now the 12 inchers just feel sooo tiny! like I'll break it or something.)

Okay guys, I just ordered a Dell 2005fpw and now I have a bit of a dilema
Heres a picture of my current setup.
www.staylazy.net/images/setup1.jpg
www.staylazy.net/images/setup2.jpg
What your seeing...
phone, sony screen connected to my server (i do some vb work on there to), mac mini which is connected to the dell monitor, then that corner is where I put all my junk and Im putting a mixer. Also in the drawers are a keyboard and mouse and an IP Phone.
Then in the second picture is my stereo system with my laptop on top.
Now, the dilema.
I dont know what to do with one of the two monitors pictured once I get the 2005fpw. I like that corner with the iPod and stuff so I dont wana eliminate that.
I also hate to waste a nice screen.
I was thinking maybe fold the laptop up, put it in the shelf, put the Dell screen pictured on top of the stereo system, connect a keyboard and mouse to the lappy, and then have a system up there. Kind of pointless though.
Someone PLEASE help me out here.

On a scale from 1 to 10, I would rate them a 9 because of the price. They put out alot of sound and they dont get fuzzy or anything, there isnt a dock but it comes with the jack that plugs into the top where you plug in your earphones, it does great on batteries, it takes 4 AAA's. I got them because the other dock style speakers arent really that small, these will fit in your pocket they even come with a case.
