Thanks, I almost got kicked out of the house by my partner. I save every box for everything I buy, because I eventually sell things. I had our whole storage closet scattered all over the house unpacking this new system and getting the old one packed up.

I wanted the 30", but that would have just freaking bankrupted my savings all to hell. I had it in my cart at one point.

Nice to have everything hooked up and be able to play around with the machine finally. I had to go get a bigger UPS because the G5 Thermonuclear Reactor™ was overloading my old one.

His iBook will not be out of date in a few days, and neither will mine. They are not like PC's that go out of date after six months. Macs stay up to date for a loooooooong time.

That's not a very good way to make friends in this forum, either.

I got these harman/kardon desktop speakers yesterday. They're being fed by my Power Mac's line output. I got them without a power supply, but that's alright because I have some spare adapters. They have a built-in subwoofer output, so once I get a powered sub, that will replace my harman/kardon iSub (and in the process, it'll free up a USB port). The blue LED on the right speaker isn't annoying either.

I traded 1000 sheets of paper for the speakers, which is pretty decent considering the paper cost me $6.52.

btw the black things under the 23" monitor are a USB cable coiled up and a Belkin USB switch. I use the switch to alternate the keyboard and mouse between the Power Mac and the PowerBook (which sits behind the 23" on an iCurve.)

What do you do with that imac screen so far away?

I lowered the resolution to 800x600 and sometimes have it at 640x480 so I can see it from the couch. I use the computer to stream iTunes from my Power Mac, and also browse the web lightly. I really had nothing else to do with the computer once I upgraded, so I thought it would be fun to put it in there.

I'm keeping it because I really love the G4 iMac and don't want to sell it. I'm keeping it also in case anyone I know wants to learn how to use a Mac, I can just let them have that one for awhile, until they see the light. (: But mainly just because I love it. (:

Also, in true geek fashion, I have the iSight that I don't use hooked up to it and looking out the sliding glass doors in the background. That way, I can see who's coming. How geeky is that? (:

Unfortunately unlike most of you my desk is not clean.....ever! :p

Recently my brother got his iMac G5 for college and since he doesn't have a place for it he gets to share my PC desk. Luckily most of the time he isn't home so I get to use it (like I am now :)) As you can see my desk is a MESS, in fact the surrounding area is too...why? I've been messing around with a lot of computers.

As you can see there's an eMate 300 and an Apple QuickTake 150 on my new chair ($29 sale OH YEAH) and the infamous Mac 7100 with 8.2 beta is under the desk, on top of that mac is a UMAX Apus 2000 Mac Clone and to the left of the mac pile is a spindle of CDs and my gaming PC. Which has a PowerBook 5300cs, bottle of juice, and an old SCSI HP CD Burner on it.

Also if you look around desk you'll see a Darth Vader lightsaber, Sega Genesis, Printer/Scanner, old hard drives (which didn't sell ;)), some boxes...and a million wires. When my brother finally moves into his dorm I'll have the desk all for myself again and I'll be slightly less messy. :D

Apple; a company with the ability and know-how to make a computer part of art, lifestyle, and a platform for your work. The ability to make a computer transparent from the work you need to use it for.

What is cool is at my new job (nothing to brag about just a stepping stone) there are 2 users with Macs in their homes. 1 uses a PC as well. Unfortunately for me they dont have older G4 machines to sell me. :( However, the savings pot is growing. I'm actually tetering towards a 12" PowerBook G4, but the portability isnt as great as teh iMac.

I read this as if you mean the iMac is more easy to carry around than a 12" powerbook.

I guess you meant it the other way around, or maybe you're just living in a parallel, but slightly different, universe. :D

Yeah my sentence structure is horrible to say the least. I meant that portability as a whole isnt a match for the power of the iMac G5. Yet with a portable productivity is wherever you are.

So how about those setup frontal shots, I need desktop Mac porn! :D

Nice setup! So how many macs do you own now? :D

You're gunna say, "where is the keyboard and mouse!" Well...:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v65/DakotaSport/powermac2.jpg
Back there when not in use... When its on, I move the basket thing in front, and place the keyboard and mouse (uh, and mouse-pad) on that wicker table.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v65/DakotaSport/powermac1.jpg
Just another closer shot.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v65/DakotaSport/atari.jpg
My Atari 2600 (I have a lot of games for that. It's a blast to play) with an IIci in the background (that's what the Keyboard, mouse, and "CD Caddy" are on). I figure this can be my "vintage" section of the house. The IIci does work, but I figure I can have more fun with the PowerMac. And anyway, I'm using the display from the IIci for the PM, since I was given only one display. In addition to the two computers, monitor, and CD Caddy, I got a bunch of software and two Zip drives. And, it was all free!

It's been like this for 2 days and I like it because I can rest my elbows on my chair and then type without having to lean on my desk at all. Weird!

The iMac is actually "Sage," although it does sorta look "Graphite" in that picture. The iMac G3 still see everyday use from my parents (I'm so mean, I make them use the older computer in the basement, lol).

I actually also have two 2600's, but no need for both them being out. The TV in front is what I play the Atari on. I do need a new joystick though, as the black one has decided it doesn't want to make things go "down" anymore.

I'm not tall, and my chair isn't up too high. My arms are definitely angled up, but I really like it. I'll have to change it when my new iBook comes though....then I can use the iBook ON the iCurve (no other keyboard) and it'll be almost the same thing!

I'm sorry to hear about that, but if you want to tell the story, I'd like to hear it.

Story: It all started when my HP laptop's hard drive died. I wasn't sure how to fix it, so I decided to put it on Craigslist and get some money so I could maybe buy a iBook or Tiger or something. Anyway, a guy was interested and wired me the money using PayPal. I sent the laptop out on Tuesday through UPS, and he was supposed to recieve it on Thursday. In the meantime, I was wondering why I didn't receive the money. I contacted PayPal (or the fake PayPal. The guy was responding to me by using the PayPal logo and web design. You would've never been able to tell the difference) and they told me that I would get the money. When it didn't ship becuase the person had supposedly moved, I contacted UPS and told them to send it to a different person because the guy had told me that he would hold it for him. So today after I still hadn't got my money, my mom contacted the real PayPal. The guy from there told us that we got duped, and we immediaetly changed our password and cancelled the credit card # we gave him. I contacted Craigslist and told them that the guy was a hacker of some sort and to report him immediaetly. In the meantime, I called UPS and told them to send the laptop back to my address. That is making the story very, very short. All in all though, the credit card is cancelled and my laptop will be sent back to me shortly. I hope that ******* rots in hell! (Sorry for the language!)

P.S Thanks for listening!
P.S.2. Love your PowerBook! :)

Hey, no problem! We all need some support at one time or another, especially in a situation like this. I hope he didn't get your mom's SSN#. I'm only 13, 14 on the 5th, and I would freak if something like this happened in my close family or friends. Just call the police or whoever and tell them about what happened. Until this is resolved, just keep hoping he doesn't do any damage.

I'm a fairly recent switcher. I returned to the Apple fold about a year and a half ago when I bought a use B&W on ebay to see if I could live the Mac way. After I unpacked the g3 I bought it took me about an hour to find the various bits and pieces I needed to put on it so that I could vpn into the office and remote to the various servers I need to support. It's been nothing but fun since then. In fact, as soon as I can afford it, I'm replacing my work provided Dell d505 laptop with a new iBook. :)

In the future I'd like to pick up a cheap sawtooth or dome iMac to replace the G3 as my primary machine and turn the b&w into a web server (replacing one of my nt boxes.) I try to do as much as I can with old equipment. It's much cheaper that way for me.

Anyway, attached is a picture of my current setup. The desk needs to be cleaned and the cables need to be tieded up. I'll gladly take any donations to replace the d505 ;)

I always wonder what happened my B&W. I hope it went to a good home like yours. I used to have lots of old equipment (at one time I think I had 8 computers with none of them less than 2 years old), but now I've sold it all and only have a G5, Cube, and iMac DV (in an iRack). Ok, well most of that is old, but the Cube and iMac are just running as servers, so I've only got my G5 with me.

I had a mac plus for a VERY short time about the time the SE's first came out. I gave it up and went to pc's. I've been drooling over osX for years now. I always wanted a cube, but just couldn't afford one then. Older machines have been my gateway drug into osX goodness. ;) I've been keeping an eye out for someone getting rid of a sawtooth or an old cube. I would love to score one of those. I've found the B&W very servicable for my uses. A little more speed wouldn't hurt, but that is the way of the world. I am hopeing to pick up a recent era ibook soon. My b&w has an Hawian heritage. I believe I am only her second owner.

I'd take those in an instant. All in all, this is what my setup would look like if I had the money. Maybe I'd switch the iBook for a PB though :D

Or just a chair period... :D

Nice clean set up you've got there though, even if you do have to work standing up.

hehehe, I knew someone would say that, I was debating if should include the old crappy chair from the old setup in the pic or not :)

I need to spend sometime looking for something comfortable, I'll be spending a lot of time in front of this system for the next 9 10 weeks doing my master's thesis. Joy!

Nice setup there, iShater! Good luck with the master's thesis, as well. What is your field/subject? I just finished my master's work in electrical engineering about 2 months ago.

Oh, notice the Dell isn't there...it's freaking broken already. They said to send the whole setup back.

Nice job, Michael, that's the second of two machines I bought from you that were basically DOA.

And thanks for the nice replies - again I got very fortunate and found a really good client who was wiling to front a really large retainer. That's really rare in what I do, and I am grateful. After working for crap asshats for 5 years I finally am working for myself and have a great 2 year deal. I feel like I've earned it, but again, grateful. I never thought I'd be working on a system like this.

Now remember, I have to sit in fron of this thing and post process about 800-1000 digital images a day. I honestly couldn't think of a better machine to do it.

1. allexsimmons has Creative iTrigue's, not Altec Lansings :)

2. And iGary has dual 20's, not dual 30's :)

Besides that, SWEET SETUPS GUYS!

I mean, whoa.

And I doubt iGary would need a PowerBook, I take it the iBook is for mobile web browsing, I doubt power is needed.

I know everyone has posted their PowerBook pictures and specs up so this is nothing special, but you ought to have seen my previous one!! Wintel laptop, 2 inches thick! Advent was the make (UK only).

Superb specs guys. Love seeing the pictures. iGary, its been said before but I'll join in, fantastic job! I only hope I can afford all that in the future!

I include the picture of my PowerBook setup, aswell as a night shot of my PowerBook and mouse. Sorry about the quality, unfortunately I was restricted to a camera phone in bad lighting! Hope you like.

:( i know, im sorry. I knew they were creatives, i have a 5.1 set on me desk, i was just hoping they were altecs :D :D also, i think 30inches means it goes full on one display and half of the width of the other. Just a guess

I like your setup, Diatribe. The two pods look cool right next to eachother.

My pop wanted to see some pictures, so I took some more and figured I'd be an attention whore and post them:

Kind of fun to have my 73-year-old dad interested. My next switcher victim. :D

And I say it again, that's the best setup I've seen. Thanks for the better pics, man!

Next purchase: Decent office chair.
Next upgrade: A new external HD
Next wish: A Dual Processor PowerMac added to the mix. :D

OMG! iGary, you always amaze me with your systems. I don't know which is better, your current one or your G4 PowerMac setup. They're both gorgeous. Well, keep up the good work. I will post my setup when I get my first Mac, the iBook!

Computer Resources and Information Management. Fancy name for MIS. I actually finished all the required coursework back in 2001, then I got married, house, trips, etc. and just now got around to start my thesis. Luckly this is not the crazy type of thesis, more like a masters project with a paper and presentation.

My proposal is due this week (I think!) so I need to get moving. I will be examining my company's existing SCM and development environment and present recommendations for changes and enhancements to support our global development centers (read: India).

USB 2.0 and Firewire (Damn you Apple for ditching ADC)

It can get kind of loud when I'm running a boatload of actions in PS, but I like it on the desk, and I'm afraid it would be a dust vaccum on the floor. :o

I really love it, but I'm eyeing the 30" display. *dangerous*

You'll love the iBook - its a great machine - I really do love mine.

Well I do like the old clear plastic look of the G4, but the new displays just kick the old displays all over the floor, the feel like sex. Brushed aluminum. Yum.

jessica, you totally threw me off with your jark comment and I had to do some research to find out who the heck "Jark" was! (Not a big art website surfer I guess!).

After reading a bit about him, yeah, sounds like this guy got a raw deal :(

I will look up the website where I got this wall (and many others!) tonight and post it back here!

My (slightly) new setup! Sorry for the poor quality, I don't have a digital camera, so I used my camcorder.

http://homepage.mac.com/ravenvii/setup.jpg

Display: Dell 1901FP, Mac: Mac mini (in sig).

What's different: PC: Yep that's my inherited old 450 MHz PIII PC (I posted about it in the community forum). Planning to put Linux on it, but haven't quite yet. Used to have a gigantic gaming PC that blows away everything else in 2003. I sold that one a couple months back.

Mouse: The Mighty Mouse! Used to be a MX1000, but I sold it (and am selling my second, unopened one, in the marketplace!).

Am I the first one to post a setup with the Mighty Mouse? YEA ME!

There's a beige PC (see sig) under the desk hooked into the VGA input on the Dell LCD. I use a wired Apple keyboard (the one in the back) and a USB mouse (it's stashed under the iCurve) to use that thing when I need it.

Thanks for the compliment. :)

I put the printer on the opposite end of the table - it's behind the 23" LCD - and brought the Power Mac from underneath to the top. I think I'm getting better reception with the antenna where it is. The same keyboard and mouse control the PowerBook when needed by way of a Belkin USB switch. I've gotten distributed processing in Compressor working between both computers - it probably shaves 15% off encoding times.
