Upgrading?? But what happens to the old?

I dunno about what other do with their old equipment, I personally don't dispose of it, at least not in the garbage. Usually I sell it or pass it to something who'll needs it more than myself. Eventually, I know it'll end up in some recycle plant but has anyone really thought about happens to your computer, once it's trashed?
Recently I've been wondering about this... Anyone else wonder? 😕😕

What you reckon happens to it?
Does your local authorise recycles it?

And I take it you never wonder why the water ways in and around the US is being poisoned. Don't you know it kills marine life?

I prefer to think of it as giving marine life a chance to use technology they might otherwise not get to use. What is cuter than an otter trying to check his gmail?

Hah, I've seen that around the forums. It really makes me laugh too. It's not a collectors edition - it's a piece of old kit! I bloody love my Unibody Macbook but christ on a bike I'm not going to call it a a collectors edition. Fools!

What happens here? Old hardware gets put in filing cabinet for later use. Sometimes it just goes old and irrelevant, like 30gb IDE hard drives or SCSI CD-RW's. Our oldest up-and-running computer now is a Pentium 4 system from 2002 or so, thinking about dropping a wifi adapter in there and just giving it to my brother. It's just a matter of "how much can you trust a teenager with the internet is his bedroom who knows nothing at all about computers?". Heh.
 
Very few consumers ever think about a product's "lifecyle" and effect. Just looking at the end, ignores what it took to manufacture it at the start. Eco-feelgooders that buy hybrid cars, propose the wider use of photovoltaic panels or CFL light bulbs might want to step back and give it a think for a moment.

Technically, PCB's by themselves doesn't hard humans. Only stupid uneducated beings who excessively heat-up or burn leaded solder in enclosed environments suffer from lead poisoning ~ who's dumb ass fault is that? 😕
 
I took a few on my older computers to the local 'Electronics dump' where im sure they are scrapped, and then recycled.

I did this along with taking all the rest of my hazard waste materials to the 'hazardous waste' disposal where they are taken care of.
 
This is why I upgrade every couple of years. I dont need a computer around that can only open safari.

Listen to me closely if you have problems like the video shown above by the op, are you ready....craigslist is your friend. Really, list everything you haven't used/touched in 3-6 months and get rid of it. Apply that rule to everything in your life and you will be free of extra stuff. It is amazing too what people will buy.
