Ok first off I know there are tons and tons of threads about this and I did read alot but its just confusing me, so I have just a few questions for those willing to help. I am new to iphone and especially jailbreaking so please bare with me.

1) Salesperson who sold me my phone said it will void warranty if jailbroken, they said even it I do a restore, there is a code inside the phone that will be broken once jailbroken and apple will know, is this true or false?

2) Are there lots of different ways to Jailbreak the 3gs? I hear lots about cydia or PurpleRa1n, if so which one do I choose? which ones the best?

thats it for now thanks

1. No. Restoring your phone will completely undo anything you did. The salesman was lying and/or didn't know what he was talking about.

2. There are only two ways to jailbreak the 3G S - purplera1n and redsn0w. Use the official iPhone Dev Team's jailbreaking tool - redsn0w.

1. Salesperson is spreading FUD.
2. Cydia is a package distribution app. To jailbreak your 3GS, you'll need Redsn0w or Purplera1n. The first is from the iPhone Dev team, second one is from a former iPhone Dev team member. Personally I liked redsn0w, it was quick, easy and works. :)

You should know not to listen to what salesmen tell you :D
Just go with purplera1n to jailbreak. Its way easier and foolproof.

1) Yes, there may be a way possible for Apple to track it down if they dive down deep enough, but Apple doesn't want to waste time doing that over a small situation. I have never heard of anybody having a problem getting their iphone repaired/replaced as long as they did a full restore. I would say you are 99.9% safe.

2) The best way to jailbreak the 3gs IMO is purplera1n. You click 1 button and voila, you're jailbroken. Cydia is an app that gets put on your phone when you are jailbroken. That is where you go to download the jailbroken apps.

Hope this helps.

Please note: Pwnage Tool does NOT work with iPhone 3G S or 2nd generation iPod touch.

wow thanks everyone for the quick reply, I had a feeling the salesperson was lying lol, maybe its their policy to tell customers that so I dont blame him

Ok, so I am going to try to Jailbreak my phone, and am alittle confused because different people are saying to use purplera1N or redsnow, what is the difference between them? do they do the same job or if I use one will my jailbroken phone be more reliable? faster etc....

and once my phone is jailbroken using either purplera1N or redsnow, I use cydia for what?

ahhh soo confused, sorry guys!

They both do the same thing. Jailbreak the iphone.
I dont think theres any difference besides the program used to JB.
Cydia is the app that installs all JB packages and programs not found on the Appstore.
Are you using a PC or Mac to jailbreak?

I may be wrong but I really don't think it matters which you do. I suggested purplera1n because I tried that my first time and I've had no problems ever since. You click 1 button and it does all the work for you.

Cydia is the app you go into to download the jailbroken apps. Think of it as your new App Store.

alright cool guys, ill try purplera1n just because its simple and I am not the brightest guy around. Is there any negative things I should be aware of after I jailbreak my phone? phone connections? internet connections? speed? batterylife etc?

Nothing as far as I know. My 3GS is nice and fast.
If we're talking about the 3G or 2G then yes it does slow them down a bit but with the speed of the 3GS there is no probs.

You might have a little more drain on battery life but no effect on speed. It depends on usage and what apps you put on it. I've only been JB'n for about 24 hours now so I can't speak that much on it. I've been on it constantly tweaking things.

enter, don't be confused. The simple act of jailbreaking in and of itself will not slow down your phone or decrease its battery life. It's just that with jailbreaking you are allowed more freedom and it's easier to make things run slower and have the battery run down faster because of the things available for use on jailbroken phones. Just wanted to clarify that.

Personally, I used purplera1n to jailbreak my 3GS. One click and about a two minute wait later and you're done.

i have a 3gs and im on the fence about jailbreaking
i have the purplera1n for both mac and windows .. and from what i read all you do is plug in your iphone with the usb .. double click the file .. then click on the let it ra1n .. and thats all ?

is that true ? i have no idea how to reset the phone or make it boot in recovery mode if something goes wrong

a few questions .. can you still get apps from the official app store ?

Click here (http://www.iclarified.com/tutorials/index.php) for a site with great tutorials on all things iPhone (and other Apple related hardware/software), including Jailbreaking, unlocking, putting a phone in DFT, restoring, etc. Helped me out a ton in the past.

And to clarify, the only thing jailbreaking does is allow you to add additional functions/applications through Cydia (think of Cydia as your friendly Jailbroken App store)--doesn't limit/remove any of the existing functionality. So yes, you'll still be able to do everything you normally would--purchase/update apps, use iTunes app, sync with iTunes (and backup your phone). You have nothing to worry about--just pick a jailbreaking method (PurpleRa1n or RedSn0w), find the appropriate steps for your operating system (Windows or Mac), and go step by step. Considering your hesitation, I'd suggest using PurpleRa1n--easiest jailbreaking solution to date. I've used RedSn0w in the past to jailbreak my 3G and it also works great--just takes a bit longer and involves a few more steps. Either way, you can't go wrong.

The 3Gs is perfect for jailbreaking.

in my experieince the 3G became slugglish after adding themes/ the 3Gs forges ahead without any noticable hits on performance

Redsn0w: http://www.iclarified.com/entry/index.php?enid=4303

Start at step 3 if your iPhone already has 3.0. Just click Next a couple times, it's REAL easy. :)

It works, it was just not functioning for the first week the 3GS JB was released cause WB needed an update thru cydia.
Once that was done Winterboard worked fine with purplerain and redsnow on the 3GS.

I unlocked my iPhone 3GS for the first time with purplera1n today and then tried installing winterboard. when it asked to tap to reboot, it shut down but while trying to boot up it stayed on the apple screen the shut off... so i had to restore it.

I will try it again tomorrow.

Okay I re jailbroke it and now have winterboard working. but you need to update/install mobile substrate first...then install winterboad and everything is good to go!!!

steps:

1. go to cydia
2. search mobile substrate(from saurik) install
3. search winterboard and download.
4. Reboot.
5. Tahdah! your done. 3GS with winterboard ..

Is purple rain working with 3.0.1? This is my first time jailbreaking and I just updated to 3.0.1 on my 3GS 32GB and its taking forever! I was curious to know how long this total process takes. Any help would be appreciated.

yah, i cant seem to figure out how to use redsnow.

Here (http://www.quickpwn.com/2009/08/jailbreak-iphone-301.html) are step by step instructions. It is very easy. Follow the links posted on that site and they will direct you to the correct ipsw files you need for the 3.0 firmware. Also, use Firefox to download the ipsw file. If you use IE it thinks its a .zip file and it doesnt work.
