I purchased Keynote with my computer this past Nov., and for the most part, I love it. However, it is starting to get on my nerves majoryly. It is sooooooo freaking slow. Everything I do causes the beachball to spin for minutes. It literally takes 30 minutes to build a slide, which I find ridiculous!

I do not want to go back to bland Powerpoint, but at this point, I do not know what to do!

Any suggestions to make it faster? Is it just the way it is on my iBook 800 MHz G4? I have maxed out the RAM and I shut every program when I use Keynote.

Grrr.

You know, i'm not sure what's up with keynote. At this point, it's become like AppleWorks, an app that's still usable, but desparately needs some attention! You may want to run some system-cleansing apps (hopefully the following posters will suggest some good ones) to quicken up your whole machine. But I would go out on a limb and say it shouldn't be that slow. I used to run it on my 400MHz G4 iMac (768MB RAM) and it was slow, but not terrible. So you should be running it faster.

I'll suggest running the utility "Cocktail" it will take care of a bunch of stuff. Anyone else have any other/better suggestions?

Run Mac-Janitor (if your before 10.3.4) and repair permissions. Sounds like a permissions issue to me.

might want to get rid of your preferences for keynote as well, maybe the prefs that corrupted or something, just an idea...

I agree whole-heartedly. Run the cron jobs and clean out the caches. Doing that solved a weird, slow-loading-at-startup Finder issue I was having. Repairing permissions is always a good idea, though it will reset any special setups you have. That didn't solve my Finder problem, but the above did.

i hope that apple starts to enhance keynote. it has great potential to allow powerpoint to be trashed. its at 1.1.1 and its still buggy here and there. have you tried working at a lower screen res? and maybe displaying the slides at 75% while working on them?

Thanks.

Where do I get cocktail or janitor?

I always do my slides at 75% or less as I like to see what I am doing on a full slide basis.

It just irks me so bad that I had to spend 45 minutes on one freaking slide and the builds still came out wrong because I was tired of:

beachball spin for 1 minute
click on build on
beachball
click on desired build
beachball 3 minutes
beachball
move picture
beachball2 minutes
picture flys across the screen too far
beachball

and so on.

Everything else on my computer if fast and zippy. I just do not get it. :(

Keynote seems like it has been really neglected. I would think they'll be doing updating of that along with AppleWorks at WWDC.

Wouldn't the problem be associated with your video card?
I have an 867 powerbook and Keynote peforms great as far as speed is concerned...My wife uses Keynote almost 3-4 times a week! She incorporates, both, audio and video in her slides....It pretty good with speed, although I can feel the video card being taxed from time to time because of the graphics.

I agree that keynote needs to be upgraded...We'll see later in a couple of weeks...

Should be a nice upgrade at WWDC!!

i feel bad that a simple app is frustrating you. i get sick of appleworks compared to office sometimes, but it does load some word documents faster in some cases. i checked apples support forum (http://discussions.info.apple.com/WebX?14@89.MutYaNbapGe.2@.68926422) and thought that this could be a similar problem your having. one last idea would be if you did a clean install of the application and start out at the original version.
