2nd week on mac, and I'm starting to miss my windows, ok it started with no colors on the tv connection, now it seems like I can't install jack ****ing **** anymore. When I download an application like the panther update or video update it gives me the map with the pkg file in it, but for some god damned reason it asks me the application with which I want to open it when I double click it..... sigh

Rather than downloading files from Apple's support site, just use Software Update... from the Apple menu. It will automatically take care of things for you.

the color for the tv thing can be adjusted in system preferences. It was in a previous post about some one trying to watch rental dvds. I think that it was switch from PAL to NTSC or something.
I don't know why you download updates from the website. Just use software updater in sys pref. For other compressed files from downloading, use stuffit standard that comes with the machine. If it doesn't open, the file type is unsupported.
if your still not satisfied. return your mac and go back to microcrap because i hate whiners.

I second the "software update" proposal. Go to the apple -> software update... best way to get updates.
Don't listen to the other dufuses on here... here's how to SOLVE your pkg problem:
1. Click once on a PKG file.
2. Go to File... Get Info
3. Under Open with, choose Installer (Macintosh HD -> Applications -> Utilities -> Installer)
4. Click the Change All... button, and approve any confirmations.
Now, about the color on your TV... I recall having a similar problem. Are you using an S-Video connection, or composite with the adapter? Let me know...
Hope this helps!

The funny (and true) thing is is that had this person gotten on here complaining about how his PC was all jacked up, they would have been welcomed with open arms. Mac have problems too. I can't install Jaguar on my computer for some unexplained reason. It's frustrating when things don't go right expecially from a computer company that is supposed to be about simplicity and has its reliability bellowed from the mountain tops by its legions of users.
(Some) Mac users need to get off of their ********** high horses for a little bit.
It's a computer for Christ's sake.

You should calm down, I think most people replying to this thread were being helpful and offereing good suggestions. You are too quick to judge... plus it is a Mac fan site, what do you expect?

You're right, they were. However, my rant was towards the poster whom I quoted in my post, not against those who were offering up advice. I don't see how calling somebody a whiner is helping them out and the way it was put across in the post reaks of arrogance and self-rightousness. And this isn't an isolated incident. Many offer very good advice about both Mac and PC but others are quick to bash anything related to Microsoft/PCs. Like I said, it's just a computer but people act as if it is so much more than that; that life itself hangs in the balance of whether a person uses a Mac or PC. I'm sure a quick scan of the boards will give you more than just a few examples of this.

I, for one, am against the s***ty Software Update application. I go straight to Apple's website and download the packages for myself so that if I need them again, I (as a dial-up user) don't have to redownload the whole thing again. Trust me, those OS X updates under dial-up aren't worth wasting another 5 hours of your time for redownload. That also explains why I had a gig of software packages on my computer (before I accidentally got rid of most of them).

If you're on Panther...well, there you go.
But it doesn't mean you can't install it. The .dmg package needs to be opened with the Finder, and the resulting .pkg file needs to be opened with the application called Installer, located in: Your Hard Drive/Applications/Utilities/. But, damn, even Panther never asks me what app to use to open a .pkg file. Double-click, and Installer opens by default.
LeeTom has already explained how to do this, but just in case he didn't explain the procedure clearly enough:
Try this: Go to any .pkg file, click on it once, and hit Command-I. You'll get an Info dialog. Go to the arrow/triangle just to the left of "Open with:" and click on it so you see a menu option. Select "Other..." which will result in a navigation menu. Navigate to Your Hard Drive/Applications/Utilities/ (as I said in the previous paragraph). Double-click on Installer (the application name). Finally, go back to your Info dialog. Click on the "Change All" button below your "Open with:" menu, then click "Continue" from the resulting pop-up pane. -- From this point on, the following time you double-click a .pkg file, it should open with Installer by default.

What has happened to the language that people use? I did not reply initially to this thread, because it was hard to read due the editing for profanity.
I understand that support issues pushes us to the edge, but in a public forum one should think twice about what they post. I try and even I get caught in saying the wrong thing from time to time.

Is there a question in there?
More than likely the problem is somewhere between your keyboard and your chair.

You can also do that in the Software Updates, just look at the menu bar, where File should be (next to Edit), and click 'Download Only.'

I felt the same way. I read the first post before there were any replies, but did not offer to help because of the attitude of the poster. Really, is that the way you *always* ask people to help you? Or maybe you just thought it would be cool to rant about something that you're completely clueless about. Either way, it's a good way to make sure people ignore your posts in the future.

And people complain out the "political" signatures...
I am 46 years old. And in my job I have to relate to the much younger. I can't help but be amazed by the language that they use.
It has been said that the use of language is an indication of the sophistication of of that civilization. If this original post is any indication then we are are in real trouble. What in 20+ years we have a president saying in a national televised speech saying something along the lines of, "These ********* enemies deserve to have a d**k shoved up their a***s. Lets ****** their women till the their inbreeding is gone".

Even then, I don't trust Software Update, maybe because it deleted a package that took 4 hours to download, and I had to redownload it. Or maybe because the program gives me the .pkg and not the original .dmg file. If I had a copy of "DMG_tool" (or whatever the program name is) with me, then it wouldn't be such a big deal.
Also, everyone...enough bitching about the damn bleeps already. The forums use a profanity filter to keep it rated PG-13 (or TV-14, or MR-14). If that upsets you, then go complain to "kaioh@tiscali.b" through a private message or three, as supposed to public hostility that began with "MrSugar"'s first post in this thread. The way I see it: Public flamewars should be entertaining, intelligent, or just plain stupid in a comical sense, not dumb and involving just plain accusations with nothing to back them up.

The people that are going to get offended will get offended no matter what, and that's their problem. What I hate is that people respond with a statement that doesn't help at all, and makes the thread useless and annoying.

True. And, again, flamewars should be based on facts, not on plain accusations with no solid support or concrete references. The stronger the argument, the better the flamewar! And to keep the flamewar entertaining, it should involve a fairly obvious comical stupidity factor, or some seemingly "grabbed straight out of the air" fact that is used upon the opponent, which often induces a comical factor. The more times these additional entertainment factors are used in a flamewar -- especially in an unpredictable or seemingly random order -- the more enjoyable the flamewar.
Here (http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=593) is an example of a great flamewar.
Here (http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=2502) is an example of a not-so-great flamewar.
In response to last post in this thread by musicpyrite:
Yes, I'm still on dial-up. I can't get cable/DSL here, because I'm probably more than 10 miles of line-wire away from the nearest cable/DSL ISP. I'm guessing more like 30 miles away. And we can't afford Satellite. I'm on 28.8Kbps, which is kinda slow. I would be happy with ISDN, and sorta happy with 56K.

That happens to you? That must stink having to re-download the whole file. What a weird problem, it's never happened to me all the times I've downloaded it.
And your still on dial up? That must really suck, I was stuck on dial up untill about 6 months ago, and man, when I got cable I never looked back. (and cable where I live was the same price as dial up, but that may not be the same situation where you live. :( )
