View Full Version : f@H: another tinker storm?
Don't panic

our production has dropped sharply, but so has that of most other teams: is it another tinker storm? what unit are you folding now?
in case, hold tight and will ride this one through :)

8 of my last 10 were tinkers.
edit: 6 were tinkers, 2 gromacs

so why do you think the production has dropped so sharply?
this is our output for the last few days

Since it's summer, it may be that those machines which are connected with universities, including SDSU and UC Davis, have been cleaned off and are ready to be re-imaged for the next term.
Rower and Bertinmann may be able to enlighten us about their labs.

I have no idea what you guys are talking about (tinkers?) but in the past 2 days I've contributed 4 work units... :P I know I know... it's not a lot but I've got laundry to fold too! But my new PC is chuggin' away as fast as it can. My iBook ain't folding because then the fan stays on the whole time which... I'm not a fan of... ahahahaha... no really... that's why.

That's great. I wish I was contributing as much, but it's going slowly for me. Thanks for helping.
Yes, the iBook shows how hard it works and the other machines just go all the time.

I had a p909 that died at 99 percent. I got some credit for it, but I can't remember ever finishing one. They all seemed to have blown up, ever since the first one arrived with the Gromacs core.
On another note, I woke up to find that my dual 800 had a kernel panic 7 hours earlier. :( It's a good thing my G3/800 just keeps going.

I just started doing this folding@home thing for the heck of it. RIght now im still going my first one..think its a gromac or sumtin like that. Had my comp on all last night at it got up to 40% done.
My poor little 500 mhz g3 is chugging along trying to get it done. Hey look up to 47%.

my 500mhz ibook started with medium sized WU's and have slowly been getting smaller and smaller WU's now its folding an 18 pt WU.

I'm just about halfway through a 400 frame WU... could someone quickly explain how you know if you have a tinker or gromac?

The easiest way is to look at the protein name and look it up on this page: http://vspx27.stanford.edu/psummary.html

I was wondering how long it takes someone to run a project on their G5 system w/2 processors running at 2.0 GHz...is the F@H program multi-processor aware? Just curious!!

Agreed. Getting tinkers on both of my machines for the past couple of days.
Couldn't figure out why my # of units was holding steady until I checked the Stanford site. I hadn't really gotten them before, though I'd read some complaints about how they're slow-going.

You need to run 2 clients in seperate folders on your HD and you need to change the machine # on one of them to 2 instead of 1.
There is an extensive FAQ, you might want to take a look at it.

Your first WU will almost always be a Tinker. It is used to calculate how fast your processor is in real life (not Mhz wise) and then assign WU's accordingly (some of the time.... during a Tinker storm, no-one is spared)

My first folding is still only 70% done. It does about 1% every 9-13 minutes so it should be done by 1 in morning i hope.
Ah lets se....
30 * 11 = 330......330/60 = 5.5 hours..WOOOHOOO lol haha
Do any of ya know of an app that will display just the text of how much cpu is being used? Kinda like the app cpu temperature does, no window...just text. Im on jaguar

Just finished first thing and now i think im going a tinker. Its wierd, this one only has like 5,000,000 steps vs the last one which had 10mil. Kinda expect the % to go up faster but instead its slower which is odd....very odd.
[EDIT: oh wait this is still a gromac but has nearly twice as many atoms...that would be it]

I have 3 Gromacs WUs and haven't seen a Tinker WU for over a week.
I have an opportunity to get a B&W @ 350MHZ running 10.3. If I get it (take it is more appropriate), I would like to dedicate it to folding, but I have a couple of questions.
1. Is a weak G3 350 even worth it? It would be dedicated 24x7 to the folding effort.
2. It's just a box. I have a PB G4, but was wondering if there was a way I could administer folding on it without shelling out for a monitor, (via my PB and some sort of cabling job).
Any help appreciated!

I wouldn't bother. I have a G3/400 which I upgraded to a G3/800. I've been using it for folding for two years and early this year, the demands of folding were getting to be too much. Some work units were taking over two weeks to be completed at 400 MHz. The upgraded machine is doing much better and even bests a G4/800 at Tinker WUs.
Btw, my p212 is gone but my p1092 is going just as slowly at 52 minutes per percent.

I WOULD bother... and if you don't want to bother, feel free to send it my way, because I'll bother....
Even though it is slow, it is still something. If you find that it isn't finishing work units, you can set it to run timeless WUs that will take longer, but will never have a deadline.

Got my first tinker today after 2 gromacs....wow the preferred days is 45 :O.....for the gromacs it was about 6 days and i could do it in about 1.5 days for both of them. Wonder how long this tinker will take...but anyways good luck everyone with da folding :D

I've had 3 tinkers from 5 work units in the past week or so.
- It only took that long because my stepfather unplugged my machine from the damn network while I was away for the weekend... could have got some serious crunching done in that time, instead it was idling looking for more work
I now have a p678, and my missus' useless lappy is running another Tinker. Ugh!

Sorry I missed this while I was out last week...
No re-imaging in our labs since the end of May. We'll have another go 'round at the end of August, but that really only works out to the loss of half a day's work or so.
Last I heard, bertinman had lost a bunch of machines and/or moved to a different job.
Anyway, our output looks pretty consistent with steady, slight growth overall. :)

Argh!
All 4 of my machines are crunching Tinkers now :( I don't know how long it will take my dual gig G4 as this is its first Tinker but my other machines will take around a week (if not longer). Balls.

I just got another (s)tinker yesterday (p638_L939_K12M_ext), after a nice run of 5 or so gromacs units in a row. The tinker is going to take me over a week to finish, even running it pretty much 24/7.
