Custom ring tones... can anybody help?

I just got a 3Gs iPhone and saw that you can make custom ringtones with your mp3's. Much to my dismay, none of my mp3's work (according to itunes) because i never purchased a song from the apple store; mind you, that much of my music came from my CDs and was acquired legally, so it is not like i am trying to put pirated music onto my ringtones. Is there anyway to sidestep this problem, so that i don't have to repurchase music (which i don't intend on doing) so that i can make it into a ringtone?

You can edit songs in GarageBand to make ringtones:

You can just use iTunes to do this. Search for the method on here or google.
