I was just telling someone earlier that I thought it was...dumb...for a band to cover a song that was released less than a year ago(?). I guess it's one way of getting your band's name out there, take an extremely popular song, one that's STILL popular with a lot of people, and cover it (without really adding much to it). Is this cover for rock people who are ashamed of admiting they like hip-hop, regardless of the quality of song writing?

... or maybe it's for people who like the song, but think Andre 3000 is a better rapper than he is a singer.

I'm not sure why covering this song is any more stupid than covering any sother song. People cover Beatles songs all the time -- and the originals are still as popular as ever. I agree that Supersuckers probably released this as a way to get their name out there (they've actually been around for a long time), but that, in and of itself, doesn't make it a bad cover. I think its fun to hear essentially the same song done in a different context.

i seriously doubt the supersuckers covered hey ya to get their name out there. but then again, maybe they're sick of the low-fi life...

it sounds like a great idea, but to be honest, the cover itself seems pretty tame. i was expecting them to take some more chances with it.

Back in the old days - like the 50's and 60's - this was pretty common practice. A good song was considered a good song, and there were often times when several releases of a tune performed by different artists could be seen in the charts at the same time. And bands always performed other peoples tunes. Historically, I don't think this really started to change until the Beatles stopped recording cover tunes and popularized the talent of songwriting.

As for the Supersuckers, they've always been pretty tongue in cheek, and have an eye for a good cover. Haven't seen them since the early 90's.
