Which Speakers?

:confused: I just got a Powerbook G4 and I am really excited to hook some speakers and a subwoofer up to it. I went to the Apple store to check things out and I saw the Sound Sticks and the iSub and I was instantly attracted to it's beauty. They are quite expensive for a student like me, but I can afford them. So I went home to do some homework on these speakers and I found a lot of really disappointed reviews and some other really satisfying reviews. I also looked at some Altec Lansing Speakers and some logitech speakers. I really want a window rattling sub but don't know which to choose. Does anyone have suggestions? Thanks!

If you really want a "window rattling sub", then i'd keep away from the Soundsticks. Their sound is subpar compared to other speakers on the market. I would highly recommend the Klipsch Promedia 2.1 set. FAR better sound than the Soundsticks, and cheaper too!

I have this (http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=588550&Sku=C375-3780&CatId=488) set and they are amazing. sound like a high end home stereo and are very loud! you won't regret getting them I assure you. the wired remote is awesome. I keep it near my mouse and it has volume, bass volume, power and a headphone jack.

Nah, the creature IIs are where its at. They can get as bumping as you want, plus at $99 retail you can't go wrong.

I highly recommend the JBL Invaders. They can be found around $100 if you get lucky. I got mine for $80 at Best Buy. The bass is BOOMIN. :D

Personally i use the Companion 3 multimedia speakers by Bose and i love theses badboys so much i hope they never wear out. :) Let put it this way when i am on noggin.com for my son and the flash part of the website is running you feel like you are watching a movie. Now the bad part, these suckers cost me $199.00 US which is cheaper than what they go for on the Bose website, but believe me they are well worth the cash. :D

I can second this recommendation. I have the Klipsch 2.1 setup with a powerbook and they sound quite good whether you are looking for window-shaking bass or just overall quality of sound. For a desktop set of speakers, I don't think you'll be disappointed.

Yeah, I work at an Apple Computer Specialist, where we've run into our fair share of speakers. Personally, I would recommend the Klipsch 2.1 set, it's what I'm using right now. I bought a Harman Kardon 4.1 and 2.1, then an Altec Lansing 2.1, and I've been most impressed with my Klipsch system. Better sound, larger range, and more power per channel give it a pretty impressive feature set for the price. If you want a really good sound, don't go for the cheaper multimedia sets you can find at Best Buy or CompUSA, get a Klipsch set, you won't regret it :D

If you value style and want sound quality more than the ability to impress people with the flappy boom of a subwoofer get the soundsticks. I have the originals (digital) though the HK site no longer lists them. The sound quality is truly excellent. They're not going to compete on volume with a component stereo but produce better sound than the Klips in my view (it's well known that humans tend to think louder is better as long as the volume's not uncomfortable). The Klips are undoubtedly louder and deeper though.

If you use the speakers as intended - mounted beside a monitor a couple of feet away - you'll have all the volume you need. The Soundsticks always get slammed for being quiet. I don't buy it. There not designed to be heard accross the room. They're (very expensive) personal audio.

When I want more than the soundsticks can offer I listen to a real hi-fi which is a step beyond any multimedia speaker set. If you want to deafen yourself do it with headphones - easier and cheaper.

I am taking a look at the Soundsticks II (50% more power than the old ones). The reason: the input is a headphone jack so they'll work with my iPod and my 12" PowerBook. Can anyone recommend another set of speakers that cost less?

Really, nothing compares to these unless you start going into $300+ territory. They can be gotten for $150 at Amazon, and you can probably find it even cheaper if you look around a bit.

I used the Monsoon MM 700 for a long time with my Tibook. Those speakers had crystal clear sound and easily were able to blare music loud enough for a latin dance party with 100 people shouting and dancing. One of my favorite things about them was their design, they are only ~1/4 inch thick. The sub worked great when I turned the bass up, even got a few complaints from the neighbors :o .

Big bass: Logitech or Klipsch systems (NOT the Logitech Z3), running off an M-Audio Sonica.

Accurate sound: Monsoon MM-1000 running off of built in.
