I was a little curious about what I paid out so far for my 2009 MacPro. Usually, I just make a rough estimate and close my eyes to the rest.:o This time I detailed it out. I was wondering what others paid for their setups after they were done with their modifications...

I know, that's not typical for an Octo-core Pro with all the trimmings. I'm lucky to have been at the right place when a corporate fire sale occurred. Worth every penny so far, although it's not my primary machine.

Hmm, all together I'm under $3,600
That's for the original 2006 2.66 Quad, the upgrade to 8-cores, the addition of 10GB RAM (making 12GB total), 8 HDDs (totaling 8TB total), two G5 gaming mice, and two 24" wide TN LCDs by LG.
If I count my audio interfaces, MIDI keyboards & control surfaces, drawing tablets, and etc. etc. then it's much more than that though.

Don't know the real calculation, but here goes:
2.8 x 8 mac pro EOL 1799
23" ACD 150
8GB ram 150
23" ACD 400
2 x desk arms for mounts 100
Had the HD's from an old setup. Along with most other things.
However I did buy 4 EOL mac pros from Apple and one quad off of here, so I made nearly 2000 off reselling them, so it was free to me.

If that's how you put it, then I've just spent nil for my Mac Pro Nehalem, which was an AppleCare replacement of my Mac Pro Clovertown...? :D The rest of my stuff are basically carried over from what's left over of my Mac Pro parts and peripherals.
I'll post around once I get my 12GB RAM and AppleCare... and that's when this thread's still alive of course.... :p
CORRECTION:
-$86 = Sold 4GB (2x2GB) FB-DIMM RAM from my Old Mac Pro
$86 = Seagate Barracuda ES 750GB
Still comes around nil for my new Mac Pro.

The End of Life Mac Pros were 1799 each for business customers.
The 23" ACD I bought after I bought 3 or 4 of the EOLs and sold them for a profit, only to wish I would have kept one. I bought a package of a quad 2.8 plus 23" ACD off here for 2,000. One day after I bought it, I found another EOL mac pro for 1799 in Kansas. Bought that one, had to sell the quad. I took the wireless, second DVD drive and some ram out of the quad, sold it for 1850. So for $150 I got another DVD burner, 2GB more of ram, 23" ACD and a wireless card for my 2.8x8.
Then I just got ram from OWC and another 23" off of craigslist. But to find a 23" on craigslist for 400 took me nearly 2 months. Most people wanted 500 minimum for non perfect units with no box, it was closer to 600.
Slowly I built a great machine I think for cheap.

I also have a 2TB Time Capsule (500€) for Backup
and an external Firewire FireDTV DVB-S2 receiver with EyeTV 3.1.2 and Alphacypt CAM for SKY (330€)
but those units also serve my MBP
for TV and movie viewing I have a Samsung LE46-A956 , a 46" local dimming LED backlit HDTV (1990€)
What can I say. This thing is really fast now. The SSDs were pure luxury but I love the snappyness of the apps. But it matches the TV now which is awesome. With my SKy subscription I can record 50-60 GB of quality movies a week which is worth keeping. Its mostly in EyeTV transport stream format based on mpeg-2 and h.264 as it comes down from the satellite. Not much sense to convert the stuff. I have a bunch of old 250 GB HDDs and when my 1TB movie disk get filled I grab 250 GB of the stuff I don't watch often and fill another of those HDDs for the cupboard.

The computer and most of these accessories were purchased in January 2008, and this is the first Mac (but won't be the last!) that I've ever owned.
Early 2008 Mac Pro 8 core ......................... $2676 (incl. tax)
Applecare for Mac Pro ............................... $120 (CompUSA clearance)
Samsung 24" Syncmaster 245BW .............. $375 (CompUSA)
Bose Companion 5 Speakers ..................... $250 (CompUSA)
3 320 gig Western Digital hard drives ......... $175 (CompUSA)
12 gigs of OWC RAM (over 12 months) ....... $540
2 Region-free DVD burners (HP & Sony) ..... $0 (ripped from my PC)
NVIDIA GT 120 512 Graphics card ............. $137
Mac OS X 10.6.x Snow Leopard (pre-order). $30
Total ..................................................... $4,303
That's a lot to spend for not using this machine professionally, but I'll tell you - Other than a minor issue with my Bose & Garage Band in the first month or two, I have had ZERO trouble with this computer.
I can't say that about *ANY* PC I've ever owned. It just goes to show that you (more often than not) DO get what you pay for. The extra RAM is for the 64 bit version of Photoshop when it's released :) (At least Lightroom is taking advantage of the extra RAM now, and Snow Leopard will make good use of it too.)
Jeez, I don't know that I can remember exactly what I paid for all the components:
Originally got an early 2008 8-core 2.8 Mac Pro w/ the 8800GT, along w/ Applecare. I don't remember how much it ended up costing
Since then, for kvm:
Dual Gateway FHD2400 monitors -- 700 or so?
Logitech Dinovo Edge kb -- 120
Mouse -- Kensington -- 50?
In terms of internal additions:
16GB of aftermarket RAM from OWC -- $500
A 2nd 8800GT video card (for a 42-inch 1080p TV I already owned) -- 280
4 internal 1TB Samsung Spinpoint F1's -- about 500
LG GGW H20L Blu-ray/HDDVD drive w/ mac pro kit -- 220
dual eSATA PCI card -- 70
Peripherals:
dual 1.5TB Seagate HDD's inside Antec eSATA enclosures -- 350
Drobo w/ 6TB worth of 1.5TB Seagate drives -- 870
SO, $2800 on top of the 3k or so I paid for the thing.
Jeebus :(
Then again, not too bad for 13TB of storage, blu-ray capability, and the ability to drive 3 1080p monitors. And the sound system I have it working in cost more than that anyway. :D

This isn't including tax/shipping because I'm too lazy to look it up again:
2008 Mac Pro 8-core 2.8GHz, stock config: $1,899.00 - EOL Business Discount
3-year AppleCare: $249.00
Trans Int'l 8GB (4x2GB) Mac Pro memory kit: $172.00
(2) Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 SATA hard drives: $179.98
NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT Mac graphics card: $279.00
Airport Extreme Card: $49.00
(2) HP LP2475w LCD displays: $1,100.00
M-Audio Studiophile AV40 speakers: $149.99
TOTAL: $4,076.98
I could be leaving a couple of things out, but that's in the ballpark.

Here's what I spent on my 2009 Quad:
$2,299: Mac Pro Quad 2.66 GHz stock w/ edu discount
$1,000: Core i7 975 Extreme 3.33 GHz CPU
$..610: 16 GB RAM
$..600: 3 x Western Digital RE3 1 TB enterprise RAID drives
$..300: RocketRAID 4320 16x PCI card
$..450: EVGA GTX 285 Graphics
$..250: Misc. cables, connectors, backplane modifications
______
$5,509 TOTAL
Conservatively I am expecting to get $500 back on my current PowerMac G5, $200 back on my replaced CPU, and $50 for my GT120 through eBay. That will potentially lower the net upgrade cost to $4,759.
I would compare this to a similarly equipped system from Apple, but you can't build one! The closest will cost $4,815 w/ edu discount (after crediting $50 for re-selling the GT120 graphics card which was replaced by the GTX 285) but will only have 8 GB RAM, 2.93 GHz CPU, and the Apple RAID card which is only half as fast as the RocketRAID 4320. My total net cost will be lower and have a 12% faster CPU, 8 GB additional RAM (16 GB total), and a RAID card that is twice as fast as the Apple model. I would say that's a pretty good deal overall.

No no no. You kidnap him for a ridiculous ransom, then pick his brain when someone says "We do not negotiate with terrorists."
I don't have a Mac Pro right now, but I've assembled a list of what I will get if I can get a job next year:
1x eight-core 2.93 GHz Mac Pro.
The largest amount of RAM to support tri-channel.
4x 1 TB (maybe 2 TB) HDDs. If I can find a RAID card, they'll be put in RAID 10.
4x nVidia GT120.
3x, eventually 7x Dell 2408WFP.
FCS, Logic Studio, Cinema 4D.
Kick-ass 7.1 channel surround sound; Harman/Kardon receiver and Onkyo speakers.
Total should be right around $12,000. I think. That's like best-case-scenario, however; if I do get a job, it'll probably be minimum wage. (RAM and HDDs not from Apple.)
I do have a PM G4, though, which has had about $35 spent on it so far.

I've read quite a bit about Onkyo and it sounds like they're a good choice. I see Paradigm has some nifty stuff, too. And the name sounds better.
EDIT: Read about some updates to Onkyo receivers, and now I'd be going for, rather than a Harman/Kardon, the Onkyo TH-NR807.

Just get a pair of B&W 800D with a pair of Mcintosh MC501 and be done with it for the rest of your life. :)

Onkyo speakers are terrible by anything other than the crap-filled HTiB market.
For HTiB speakers, they're ok.
Onkyo makes the best feature-for-pricepoint rcvrs in the market right now.
But their speakers and subs are crap.
