My iBook G4 / 800 MHz is my first Apple, but I've used them before, so... :D
- Apple II's in elem. school (played the old school Castle Wolfenstein ;) and a couple of other stupid edutainment games) Also played extensively with my best friend's Franklin-branded Apple II clone. His parents got him Gauntlet cuz it was a multiplayer game so they figured he would socialize more :) and we did a lot of programming for fun.
- Apple IIgs in junior high school (played more stupid games, including Ultima I/II yay!, argued with CS teacher about needing to learn Appleworks when I knew how to do the same stuff on my Amiga)
- Original Mac -- only used occasionally.
- Mac IICI - my undergraduate student newspaper had two of these running PageMaker and MS Word 5.1 much later than reasonable...like in the Performa era. :( I used those soooo much. Hated the drunk mac boot icon soooo much. :)
- Performa-ish Mac (something with an 030 or 040) - we used these for part of freshman computing, just for MS apps
- big gap
- iBook G4, iPod, AEBS...lovin' it.

Is there a site where you can get a list of all of Apple's computers, with photos to accompany the list? There's two brands I can't remember the name of.

That apple-history site is very cool inded.
My first encounter with a work computer was a mac. I learned to type on a 1989 MAC portable my dad got for the office. I remember how impressive it was that it was a computer-to-go. This thing weight a ton and it came along with a huge case wich looked like you wanted to go on holiday for a week.
Then I got my dads old mac it was a 1992 PowerbookDuoDock. I still have that one. :D It is just so nice to look at. I will have to build a Mac shrine for my old machines. Mac has always had the best concepts, this one was defenitely ubercool.
Then my first bought computer just for myself was at the tender age of 20 years and it was a G3 Powermac 400 mhz with the 12 gig drive, and 640 RAM wich I still use today.
I was never really into computers untill I could use them artistically. I got the G3 for my design studies, it helped me a lot :p
But now its time for a change. I already ordered my 2,5 G5 with 1,5 gig of ram. IIIIIIhaaa :D

Those things were cool! My friends dad had one of those while working for Motorola. He let me play with it every once in a while. I thought it was a great idea being able to have a desktop and then whenever you wanted a laptop, just pull it out of the machine. Cool stuff
And congrats on the new machine :D

About every major model since 85, perhaps 2 dozen. I even had the dreaded 6300CD, an eMate, a 5300 Powerbook, and my model M00001 still works perfectly.
My new G5 with 2GB ram, the upgraded card, and dual 250GB drives should be here today or Monday.
Ah, Apple. Where would I have gone without you? (Probably more time to work on my golf game)

at work:
(1) 9500 180/mp (2000) (I checked and I was wrong with the other model I did put here)
(2) got replaced with G4 500/MP (2002)
and then I quit there when they ordered the first 2X1.8Ghz G5
at home
(1)(feb2002)2nd hand Performa 5200 75Mhz, 2GB, 40Mb ram, cd-rom, i wanted to use it for MP3's but it was too slow
(oktober2002)gave the 5200 to a friend who wanted to use it for old mac games...
(2)(november2002)2nd hand B&W G3 300 768Mb ram 2x20GB internal drive new 48x cd-rw replaced the original drive + new external 80GB HD
(3)(march2003)2nd hand Ti-PB G4 400 1GB ram 20GB internal DVD-rom + new 52x external cd-rw
(dec2003)->sold B&W & got a new 30GB 3d gen iPod instead (B&W was only used for iTunes since I got the PB)
(jan2004)started my own photostudio so home changes to work ;-)
(4)(jan2004)2nd hand Classic received from a friend
(march2004)Ti-PB got stolen
(5)(april2004)bought a new 2X1.8 GHZ G5, 1,5GB ram, 160 sata, SuperDrive
(april2004)Sold the external 52x cd-rw
(6)(june2004)received a 2nd hand iMac DV 400, 64mb ram, 10GB HD, 24x cd-rom
(7)(june2004)received a 2nd hand Clamshell LimeGreen iBook SE 366, 128mb ram, 24x cd-rom (poweradaptor is broken, awaiting the replacement)
(june2004)selling the iMac on eBay now since I just want the iBook as harddrive/monitor for checking my digital images when needed on location. G5 delivers the speed I need ;-)
future??
when buisness goes well -> selling the iBook and getting a 12"PB or iBook (depending on funds and specs at the time I need it)
as you can see I bought mostly 2nd hand in the beginning, I didn't had the funds for a new one, but I wanted to switch to apple since I used it at work and my P2 450 sucked big time!!
it's a pity they stole the Ti-book, but my G5 is much smoother at doing things with Large files...

Yeah, I always used Mac's cuz they were what was available / used by others on specific projects until I bought my iBook G4. My heaviest Mac use before the G4 was that pair of IIci's that we wrote our newspaper on. They weren't mine but I probably used them more than any of my own computers since my Amiga. ;)
OS X was the first time I really *wanted* a Mac, and there wasn't such a convenient opportunity to buy an OS X Mac between the initial release and just now. So I had been using PCs and sorta forgot about it. Then I saw Panther and iLife and my decision became a lot easier.

Yeah, it seems like since Apple started making multimedia applications for us average and wantabe professional users, an evolution or revolution is in the making in terms of computer usage.
I've always been drawn to the style of Apple computers, even before I recognized they were Apple. I remember going to a campus bookstore back in 1990 to buy a computer. I don't think I really knew anything about computers back then--in terms of Mac vs. PC. I just grafitated toward the then Mac Classic because it looked better.
When the second version of iMovie came out, that simple application took me to another level of computer use. No longer just using the computer to produce light weight newsletters and fliers. Now I could produce edited vidoes.
Since then, I've been wanting to learn as many multimedia applications as I can. OS X certaintly compliments media creations--with its look, style, and functionality. Being able to have 5 or 6 carbonized and cocoa applications opened at the same time and actually importing/exporting and exchanging files between them. That's all awsome. Has made me not even look back at Classic.
It's going to be interesting to see what's coming. I get frustrated at times with computer bugs and the cost of that comes with updating stuff, but in the long run it's worth it.

My first Apple was a //e, purchased in 1984; how I loved it so.
I was just 4 when we got it, and I used the hell out of it - to this day my handwriting is atrocious but I can type 90wpm because I typed every school assignment I ever had (in MultiScribe - props to anyone who remembers that word processor!). It had an 80-column/128KB card, duo-disk 5 1/4" drive unit, and a Grappler+ parallel interface.
In 1988 I got my first experience with Macs and the internet (Bitnet, really), using a 1200 baud Apple Cat on a Mac Plus at school to dial into the local university's IBM mainframe and hang out on Bitnet RELAY (which would later evolve into IRC) - at the time, the notion of chatting with people around the world in near-real-time for "free" made me giddy.
I owned a succession of PC's over the next few years (the beloved Apple //e was finally given away in 1994 or so) but when I got into college I managed to pick up an (already way-obsolete by 1995) Mac SE/30. I was beginning to get into UNIX and ended up running NetBSD on it - it freaked people out when they'd try and sit down to use my Mac only to discover a text-mode login prompt!
I lugged that SE/30 around for a year (in a swank Apple carrying case dating from the pre-powerbook era) until its analog board finally gave out, and ended up replacing it with a NeXTstation that I bought for $270 in 1996 - at the time I was taking a class in digital music synthesis where much of our classwork required using the crusty old '030-based Cube in the synth lab. It was worth spending a few hundred bucks to have a faster machine at home to work on.
I loved NEXTSTEP, and sold that NeXTstation it to a friend a year later in order to upgrade to a NeXTstation TurboColor with a NeXT Laser Printer(both of which I still have!). That TurboColor was my sole machine for the next 3 years, until I broke down in 2000 and bought a used Thinkpad because Omniweb 2.7 on a 33 MHz 68040 was no longer cutting it as a web surfing platform!
I've owned a succession of PC laptops (and briefly, a desktop) since then, mostly running Linux, but all the while I'd been tinkering with OS X whenever I could get my hands on it. (My girlfriend of almost 2 years had a 600 MHz ibook until recently) Finally, I could wait no longer - I needed a new desktop and the $849 refurb deal on the 1.25 GHz emac w/ superdrive was too good to pass up. It's due to arrive tuesday, and I couldn't be more excited.

My first computer at home was an Apple ][+ that didn't really have any software except some sort of database program and ProDOS. We got it at the flea market.
At school we had a bunch of Apple ][e computers. I was the first person at my elementary school to beat Oregon Trail :-)

When I was a kid my mates dad was an Apple dealer and the first contact I had was with an Apple ][e. I wanted an Apple from then on, I took me a while to get there though.
The one's I own are:
PowerMac 7500/100 (with G3 375MHz upgrade)
PowerBook G3 Wallstreet
iMac 350
G4 733Mhz Quicksilver
No plans to get rid of them, I still used them all.
Just waiting for the G4 iPods and the G5 Powerbooks (I may have saved some money by the time these get released)

So, do you buy a new machine every year, or what? Can you buy me one? ;)
Pretty much. My wife and I have been in college/grad school since late '96 so we get the student discounts (though that just ended in May with her finishing her masters). They used Macs exclusively in her Masters program so she always used a laptop and I always use a desktop. Plus we have both worked full time while going to school. I usually sell my machines about a year after getting them and upgrade. Macs hold their value pretty well so after a year you can still get a good amount out of them and only spend about 25% of the cost of a new machine + what you make selling them. I'm a little bit obsessed with keeping my machine pretty current. Though I have had my 1GHz 17" iMac for almost 1 1/2 years......waiting for the G5 iMac.

I had an Apple ][ + back in the early 80's (I really wish I'd held onto that machine...it would be really cool to have it now). But, with the emergence of the cheap and (for the time) powerful IBM PC, I bought a 4.77 MHz PC (with a *hard disk*...what a luxury!) in 1984, and owned exclusively PC's from then until recently. When OS X was introduced, I'd been using various flavours of Linux and FreeBSD on my PCs, which re-ignited my interest in Apple computers.
I bought a 15" 667MHz TiBook a couple of years ago now, and have been completely converted. I don't think I'll ever buy another PC. I'm eagerly awaiting the arrival of the G5 PowerBook, which will be my next computer.
Interesting thread.
Cheers

I've used a bunch of Apple IIe machines in my early school days. I still remember the big floppy disks and "beep...rata-tat-tat-tat" when you turned the IIe on. I've also used a bunch of old Macs that I don't remember too well. They might have been early Performas or LC models.
As far as personal Macs...
My family's first computer was a Performa 6300CD. That thing had a whopping 100MHz PPC and about 1GB of HD space. It's amazing how a family of four could store all of their files & programs on a single gig of space and still have room to spare.
My sister got an original Bondi iMac several years later when she went off to college. I remember how powerful it seemed compared to the Performa. :D
The family computer later got upgraded to a blue & white 300MHz G3 tower. I inherited the Performa with that upgrade.
Fast forward to 2000. I upgraded to a Summer 2000 Ruby 400MHz G3 iMac, which I'm still using right now. This little champ keeps on chugging 24/7 without skipping a beat.
My sister recently upgraded her Bondi iMac to a 1GHz G4 FP iMac.
And most recently, the BW G3 tower was replaced with a 1.25GHz G4 Superdrive eMac. Nice machine for the price.
I'm glad to be part of a Mac only family! :D

interesting. i've thought about this before, but never put it in order. let's see:
Mac Classic - didn't really own it, but i used to play w/ it in Macy's every time i went to the mall. this is where i first b/c a Mac fan
Macintosh LC - half the graphic design class wanted to get the markers out for our first project, the other half couldn't stay out of the computer lab. guess which half i was in?
Powermac 8100/66 - upgrades to the graphic's computer lab
Powermac 7100/80 AV - first Mac of my very own (begging & pleading w/ the parents for this. their investment paid off)
Powermac 8500 - work computer @ CNN.com (actually went through a few computers there. don't remember them all)
changed jobs - went to PC for a little while
Powermac G3/300 - talked an all PC dept in my NEW job to pony up for this. it was pretty sweet: floppy, CD AND Zip!
bought a Gateway for myself. what was i thinking? oh, right, "free" software from work.
Powermac G3 B&W/400 - went to work for Apple!
Powermac G4/450 - one of the first groups w/in Apple (that i knew of) to get the G4. ye-ah.
Powermac G4/400 GE - bought this & a Cinema Display w/ my employee discount on my way out the door to a dot.com
Powerbook G4/400 - dot.com bought this for me. still with me (consolation prize along w/ the Cinema) ;)
Powermac G4/dual 1.25 (MDD) - bought this for myself. it was time for an upgrade
Powermac G5/1.6 - talked current job into upgrading from painfully slow G4/400 a couple months ago
i'm sure there are a couple work computers i missed, but i think i've provided a pretty good revenue stream for Apple over the past 8-10 years.
now i just need to upgrade my iPod...

As per my signature.
The Performa 580 now keeps dairy cow records at the family farm.
I use the iMac with Panther at work, and the eMac at home.
The first two computers had about 5-6 years use before moving on. I expect the eMac to give the same.

My families first mac was a PowerMac 6500/225.
We then got a FW800 single 1Ghz and I got the 6500 to myself.
For playing around with I got another 6500/275 and my mom brought home an old Powermac 6100 from her work that they were getting rid of. Didn't use either much or keep them for very long.
Now I have my own 1.5Ghz 15" PowerBook. Best computer I have ever used. :D

Been a Mac user since 12/27/94! Yes, I remember the date :D. Here are my Macs, with specs (amazing how far we've come):
Performa 630CD - 33MHz 68LC040 (no FPU  ), 8MB RAM, 250MB HD, 1MB VRAM
PowerMac 7100 - 66MHz PPC601, 16MB RAM, 500MB HD (SCSI!), 2MB VRAM
iMac DV SE - 400MHz G3, 768MB RAM, 80GB HD, 8MB VRAM
PowerMac MDD - dual 1.25GHz G4, 768MB RAM, 160GB HD, 64MB VRAM
PowerBook 12" - 1GHz G4, 768MB RAM, 80GB HD, 32MB VRAM
I've been very happy with all my Macs. None have given me significant problems. The 7100 has a dead hard drive, but that's understandable, and the combo drive in my MDD died the first week, but Apple took care of that. I'd love to add a IIfx to my stable, and perhaps an SE/30. Maybe one day when I have more room...

(1) Macintosh Plus /w 4MB RAM & 20MB external HD
Borrowed it for a while in early 90's, went back to Windows 3.1 when I had to return it.
(2) Macintosh Performa 460 /w 8MB RAM & 160MB HD
My first own Mac. Saved all my money for a year to get it. Finally bought one in 1994.
(3) PowerMac G4 400MHz (Gigabit Ethernet) /w 640MB RAM & 2x80GB HD
True beast at the time I bought it (in July 2000). Lasted until last Christmas, when was replaced by G5.
(4) PowerMac G5 Dual 1.8GHz /w 2.5GB RAM, 2x250GB HD & 20" Cinema Display
Bought it to get a true Audio workstation (in December 2003), as G4 started to show its age.
These have been the only Macs among my family members or friends. All the others are on the dark side. :(
