The Almighty 10.5.8 Thread.

This thread is for anything. Including a general notice that 10.5.8 is now available and being distributed. Mine DL'ed from the Apple update utility in like 4 seconds which is terribly fast but not surprising as I usually get 8 to 10 megabytes per second from Apple. Anyway it DL'ed and then restarted to the grey Apple with spinning marry-go-round 3 times before I got a desktop. 10.5.7 was the same IIRC.

Everything seems to work so for.

The only problem so far is my screen saver didn't work (nothing displayed) the first time it was called up and was reluctant to go back to the desktop on user input - but did about 8 seconds or so. The Screensaver in question is the iTunes Album Art one set to 5 rows.

So, any other information, warnings, or cautions concerning the newly released 10.5.8?

PS: My iChat started working again! So that's a good thing I guess. :D

Yeah, I got my Safari and iTunes updates about a week ago. They're not part of the 10.5.8 official distribution. But what's this? You uninstalled Safari? I luv my Safari. Bestest/fastest browser for OS X. And the "Develop" menu in it is great if you have that turned on!

Something else I'm noticing is that my CPUs are under FAR less load. Usually with Safari and iTunes loaded and just sitting doing nothing I get CPU bars that look like:

1% 3% 8% 2% 5% 2% 2% 6%

Or something like that. Now all but one or two cores stay at 0% and the one or two only hit 1%. So like:

0% 0% 0% 0% 1% 0% 0% 1%

So this is a VERY welcomed change indeed! :)

Well, the thing is I don't use safari at all!! So much so, I've trashed it along with all it's support files and ever since then there's no more beachball mouse pointer!! But, I think there's something in MacOS that searches for it's updates... Guess the best part is, OSX doesn't die on it's arse like windows would if you removed explorer!! :D

Why don't you get yourself a skitch (http://skitch.com/) account??
Their utility is really cool and it's free to use! You can host images on their servers or set up your own ftp setting and host them on your domain (if you have one).

ATI driver in 10.5.8 has been upgraded to 2.0 ATI-1.5.48 from 1.5.44 - same extensions support, OpenGL benches slightly higher.

This fixed the VMWare 3D Acceleration bug. (http://blogs.vmware.com/teamfusion/) You can re-enable 3D on your VMs again if you have an ATI card. Whee!

When I ran a permissions check pretty much every file updated was set incorrectly.
