Okay, My parents have offered me a very big gift. They will match whatever money that I put into the spare room upstairs to change it into my own personal home office. At 16, having a room dedicated to my own computer would be awesome, and I would consider myself the luckiest kid ever :)
I have around $200 saved right now, so that means $400! Easily enough to replace that remnant carpeting with some laminate. We are making the 3 hour trek to IKEA on Monday to pick some stuff out and some flooring. I have attatched a photo of my final 4 options. I am leaning towards the 1.15 per sq. foot because it is part of the TUNDRA series and has a 15 year warranty. The 65 cent stuff would be more cost effective however.
We are painting the room on Sunday, and getting the Flooring on Monday. The floor has to sit for 48 hours pre installation, but I will post pictures every step of the way. The first two pictures are of the space currently. The only thing staying is the ceiling fan! (I would also like to add I already have a glass L-shaped desk in storage, because it wont fit in my room)

Fixin' to be a great thread to follow. Are you headed to the IKEA in Schaumberg, IL? There and Cincy are the closest to me.
Don't forget the rule: KISS. Keep it simple, stupid. You don't need a lot of "stuff" to make a room look nice. And make sure you do very thorough research before you commit to buying anything. I never purchase anything until I'm 95% sure that I have found the absolute best price.
$400 should make a mighty fine office space

When I first looked at this post (pictures only) I thought you were showing that you either added a door or deleted a door. I guess it pays to read. :D
Best of luck - looking forward to see how it turns out.

Thanks guys :) I am actually heading to the Canton, MI IKEA. We live in Northern Michigan.
I am going to keep it simple. I have a dark grey/black color scheme, and I am going to try to shoot for a vintage modern design. I would like to have maybe like a wall shelf with some old cameras and a world globe or two on it. We will see how that turns out. I am only going to bring in black and white pics/ with the exception of one accent piece I haven't decided on yet.

It seems like top left would match the door and trim the best, but I'm leaning towards bottom right.

I Kind of like the top right haha :) The walls are going to be a grey color, and I might add an accent wall in black, and have stripes in different gloss colors. (like the wall the same paint color, just the stripes being in different sheens.)

Update: Nothing much.. Emptied out the entire room and painted the ceilings. Its white, so it doesn't really look any different but since this is the picture gallery I thought it should have a picture :) The real painting is tomorrow.
Also notice that I patched a huge hole I found in the door under the Rumor Has It poster.. (The room was my sisters, and she had never seen it before )

It's funny how much time people spend planning their studies/offices. When I knew I was moving, the thing I spent the most time on was planning exactly how I'd have my office laid out.
When I viewed the house, I decided instantly which room would become my office, measured it, and sat down with a room planning program. Unfortunately, things didn't turn out how I planned, and I'm still trying to organise my office - for a start, my girlfriend decided she wanted a desk in the office so I have to share :(
Good luck with the painting tomorrow :) looking forward to the pics.

Wow your lucky i didn't get the spare room until i was 20! that was when my brother moved out. Then again my parents would not let me do anything to the room :( Interested to see how it turns out.

I agree on the office planning thing :) Although, I really enjoy interior design, and a lot of planning went in to my bedroom also.
I have decided on flooring from the TUNDRA series though. The SLATTEN reviews aren't the best.. I am debating if I want to use the glass L-Desk, or purchase 2 MIKAEL $49.99 desks or 2 VIKA tables and have my chair in the middle of the two. (look at attachment. I cant describe these things haha)

I used to work at a sushi restaurant about 2 blocks away from Ikea, and I'd go there every day on my lunch break for some food. I also went there on opening day and got free stuff, haha. I HATE their carts though! They are NOT normal and rotate 360 degrees and I can never keep them going straight and have fallen over leaning on it while walking D=
I am liking that second choice of flooring though =3 But before you hit Ikea and make your final decision, check EVERYWHERE. Lowes sometimes has good flooring, and so does Home Depot. Hell, I got some amazing laminate flooring like your cheapest option from Big Lots for about $0.30/sqft

LOL about the carts. I just use the little bag trolley things. People are always staring at me trying to control the carts haha. We have looked at Home Depot, but their 99 cent stuff looks like IKEA's 65 cent stuff. I cant find Anything like the Dark IKEA stuff for anything close to that price.

We are in the process of renovating our entire home, and we've seen some things rather affordable every now and then, I guess it depends on the season, maybe? I'm rather ignorant with when home supplies go on sale =\ I just know that floors get really expensive really fast DX
Try the carts, I dare you.
EVERY time D= I do something stupid with them every time I try using them. The employees laugh when I debate whether or not it's worth it to take one, but then they're just so useful when you're buying plants and stuff.
I'm pretty excited to see how your room turns out.
Also, out of curiosity, where in Michigan are you from? I spend about 2 months up in Ostego, though I also travel around Muskegon, and Laughing Whitefish Falls every now and then.

Looks like you're having a lot of fun with the upgrades. The angled areas on each side of the window should probably be painted the wall color (grey) not the ceiling color (white). I believe that's how they do it on all the home improvement type shows. On your way through the tri-cities to Ikea, wave as I'm here in Michigan too!

Okay, just got back from IKEA. I got a lot of nice stuff, but the main thing is the flooring. I ended up on the oak color because it worked best with our molding. I got some wall shelves, and other accessories, but I will save those until the end ;). Anyways I did attempt to use the shopping carts LOL I almost killed a 4 year old because the flooring was making it go out of control, but nobody was hurt in the end :p

I really hate to do a triple post. I was going to wait until the next post to post this but nobody was posting :o Maybe after it gets bumped up Mods can combine?
Anyways yesterday went fairly smoothly. Carpet came up okay, carpet pad came up okay, but the staples were another story. I would say it took 40 minutes for the carpet/pad, but another 1 1/2 hours to walk around with pliers/flat head screwdriver pulling up staples. No pictures with the carpet out though. Sorry!
Today we woke up and laid down the underlayment. I really was surprised how long it took to get perfect! Even then, as we laid the floor our work got screwed up again . We started in the dormer window, and it went fine until we got to where the walls go out on both sides. Luckily we are left with a pretty small gap that will either be filled with a sliver of flooring at the end, or some quarter-round :p. It took about 3 hours to get "out" of the dormer window, but once we got the air vent covered we flew to where it is currently in about 2 hours. We should finish tomorrow and put in all of the quarter-round on Saturday. That means furniture move in soon!!
Sorry of all of the rambling. Here are some pics.

Nope, just lay (and in our case, cover up imperfections with molding ;)) and you are done. They are laminate so they are technically just a piece of particle board with a picture of a dead tree on it :D Sad in some ways but the price/durability of laminate more than makes up for it haha.

Looks good.
Some words of advice. I am a flooring installer, and laminate is the cheapest way to go in terms of cost. Just watch regarding the scuffing and the marking on the floor. I would recommend taking a carpet mat and put it under your chair so that you don't make the roller marks on the floor (those non marking wheels are a bunch of BS, they don't work). DON'T use the plastic mats, they are not designed for wood floors. They will make impression marks in the laminate and those wont come out. When I go to sand and refinish a floor I know where people put their computer setups ;)
As for the furniture, don't drag. put felt protection on all of the legs and corners of the furniture, so when you do drag it (and yes we are all lazy and do it sometimes) it will keep the floor in good shape.
Just a few things to keep your floor in relatively good shape. Laminate cannot be sanded down since it's just particle board and veneer coating on the top. Most warranties don't cover labour, just the material cost of the section that has to be removed, and if you used glue you are SOL cause you have to rip the whole floor out since it's tongue and groove laminate flooring.
Anyways good luck with your space! Looks great.

Update: No pics as it hasn't changed.. The molding is still a bit tacky because of the Humidity. One large problem: I accidentally broke a piece of the glass desk. Not the actual glass (thank god) but the frame. Also, I lost 3 of the 10 little suction cup things that hold the glass in place.
It really frustrates me after painting it all, but I think I am going to order this desk. (http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=9193530) I can afford it, I just might have to put getting an EyeTV on hold..

ruling the day. I, too, planned and plotted only to realize that the phone jacks, cable jacks and unusual glare from a small window put it all in flux. Guess it's true what they say about the best laid plans.

Sorry for the slowing down of updates, a lot has been going on. Yesterday I took my road test and I am proud to say that I passed :) We live in a small town so We had to drive over an hour one way so I could take it, and we still have to go to the Secretary of State today to actually get my license. tyvm macfan :) Some small updates. Molding is 95% done, the other 5% being the transition thing that goes in the doorway. We purchased new blinds on sale at Home Depot (regularly $66 cellulars on sale for $22!!!!) So we got all 3 windows for the price of one. We also installed the wall shelves, as seen in the picture. We are really just waiting on the desk to bring everything in. Also, we are going down to IKEA again tomorrow to return some extra packs of floor. We are going to put that money into some accessories for the room.

sitting area. Perfect spot to do some homework/watch TV! :) (Waiting on the TV tuner :p) Not exactly the first sofa choice, but for our budget some throw pillows make it look great IMHO.

another angle of the room. Notice the Yucca plant we got! I love that thing haha. Ignore the table its on. I am either going to spray it black or just buy another one at IKEA. it looks like the lack tables are only like $8 now.

Ikea Jarpen shelves. I really really like these for some reason :D Also notice: the blinds arent put in yet. one is laying vertically in the window frame though. The roller shade is coming down.

It is indeed looking good. I had planned to have a sofa in my office until my girlfriend decided she wanted a desk in here too :(....one day, we will see hahaha.
From your diagram it looks like there's be a lot of empty space at the moment. Where is your desk going?

too bad about the sofa :( I don't have to worry about any of that. yet..
the chair is going to the right of the desk chair in the diagram. It is going to swing out into the room like the rendition I posted a few posts back. Once the desk is in their wont be too much free space, the diagram isnt exactly proportional.

Looking good brother.
I was looking at your wood floor and it reminded of installing laminate flooring into my buddy's condo. Not completely thinking the steps thru, we originally started in the middle and worked our way to each edge. We got one side completed and realized you have to work from one side of the room to the other. We had to take the whole floor apart - good times.

Haha, yes YouTube is a big help and it helps me a lot. Especially when I'm doing stuff that requires a bit of DIY.

^ I would, but with new iPods soon, supposed tablet, and only 2GB of RAM in my macbook it might be a while ;)
Okay, The desk arrived today! I have got a lot to do with building that and setting up/cable management. Pics coming within 3-4 hours!! :)

I have that desk. I got it at Staples though. It's really well made and extremely sturdy.

Looks clean, nice.
Perhaps some wider shots in the morning with the digital? Also, and perhaps it is my monitor, but I'm still getting the impression that the paint is blueish with a grey tint.

it does have a bit of a blue in it, but not nearly as much as the pictures are portraying. Also my light doesn't really help because the shades are dark purple and kind of change the color at night. (here is a picture (http://i94.photobucket.com/albums/l107/benchmieleski/SANY0139.jpg) of part of the fan.)
Thanks Thanks and Thanks! :)

Now the hard part, keeping it organized. :)
Next step, cable management! I just wrangled most of my cables together this week, so it's fresh on the brain.
Looks really nice.

That's what I used. 5 power bricks, and a lot of cables all stashed in the box. I posted it in the setup thread last night I think. Within 72 hours for sure.

Looks good, but I dont know if I should spend $30 for a box when I can get a similar box cheaper somewhere else. Is there any reason why you would suggest the cable box over something like a small basket with a lid?

yea I agree. About a year ago my dad threw away his vintage polaroid :( If only we would have known I was going to display the cameras at the bottom of their closet.
I am going to add cameras eventually, but I dont want to just order them off ebay or something. I want to actually find them and get something that I really like.
