Probably figured he wouldn't be doing anything till the next election so might as well take a new job.

Fair enough, but why resign? If they want to leave the GOP, just switch to independent, or stay where you are and vote based on your opinions, not the opinions of your party. Resigning just doesn't make sense.

I don't imagine it would be exactly pleasant being a republican voting to the democratic side.

No, I'm sure it wouldn't. So independent is always an option if you don't want to switch to the Democratic party.

Well, he's not exactly pulling a Palin. He already stated that he would leave the Senate after completing this term and is in the twilight of a political career rather than the beginning.

In the expanded article it states he might be looking at the presidency of Florida State University.

I would have to guess being an ideologically conservative, yet generally rational, member of Congress has to be the most marginalized job in the world right now.
