View Full Version : Am I the Only One?

Am I really the only one that actually prefers the old plastic Macbooks as opposed to the new aluminum ones? There's just something about that white polycarbonate that was love at first sight! And the new ones just seem.......somewhat dull to me. Now, I'm not saying they're not beautiful. And certainly I can understand why people like them better. But personally........eh...
But alas, I can't get one! I only get a $10.00 a week allowance, and rarely ever get paid. I tried to get a job this year, but with time's being as hard as they are, I wasn't suprised to come up empty handed. Now I worry that I'll never get the chance to have the computer I've been dreaming of for three years...........
But I can dream..........

~Anywho, who else here prefers plastic to aluminum, and why?!
I do. Because I know if I had an aluminium one, it would have a few dents in it already. :p
In all seriousness, I can't compare, since I haven't owned both. I'm just happy with this machine, regardless of what other people have or what else is out there.

The Aluminum MacBooks are very nice, but I kind of prefer the White MacBook. Sure the Aluminum has a faster processor, RAM, and VRAM but their not huge benefits unless your a professional who will really make use of them.
The LED Display on the Alu. is nice, and the glass looks sexy, but it has way too much glare. Also It is handy to have a removable battery. I know the MacBook Pro battery is supposed to last 7 hours and for years, but it is still nice to be able to have a spare. Also I don't really like the glass trackpad on the Pro.
Not to rub it in, but I will be getting a new White MacBook in about a week! :D

I'm just worried about getting an allowance at all! Besides, I couldn't. Times being what they are today, how could I?
Now give it to me straight: They're gonna discontinue the polycarbonate line soon, aren't they?

i prefer the poly, just because spares are cheap you can change the battery and with mine (blackbook 2.4 maxed 4gb ram) its a speedy comp) also im less worried about denting it etc. the alu's are epic but i feel that they are too fragile (for me) and that for the price of a alu mb you could get a poly mb and a massive second screen!

Bro, I know how you feel right now, I was like that ALSO 3 years ago, I still had my old windows laptop, which was a piece of junk, but still gets me through the day, with my school work.
I'm sure you'll be lucky enough to get the Nvidia GFX on the whitebook. I have the M2007 WhiteBook, and it's okay. graphics wise not really cause it's intel. I really want to upgrade to the new kind of macbook.
and YES i prefer to get the Plastic MacBook instead of the aluminum because i think they are more sturdy, and I don't know it's just like that for me. I really wish they'd bring the Black Polycarbonate MacBook because that one just stands out. I'm not saying the white doesn't, but it's just much better IMO. I'm jealous of my friend who has the last blackbook before they discontinued it. She's very lucky to have that!!
and with the video my friend, check out my YouTube channel *link on the Signature* all my recent VLogs are recorded from my MacBook via iSight and internal mic.
also I sang a taylor swift song, just using my macbook. recorded once and edited with some effects with iMovie then I uploaded it on YouTube.

I would have gotten the white MacBook if I knew it wasn't going to crack in less than a year. The original MacBooks in 2006 had this design flaw and Apple has yet to solve it.
After the 13" MacBook Pros came out the UB MacBooks were discounted to $999, the same price as their White siblings, so my choice was easy.

I doubt that it will be soon. The MacBook is the best selling Apple notebook ever, and the only "consumer" notebook they have currently.

No they won't be discontinuing it for a very long time, Actually a lot of college students, aka. freshmen students often buy the WhiteBook. it's only sometimes when a college person buys a PRO, because they might need it for their course. they need a really powerful machine so they buy the MB PRO.
But i'm really satisfied with the WhiteBook, I really want to trade mine to a BlackBook, it has that matte finish, and i don't know the Apple Logo light seems brighter on the BlackBook and the Pro's...

The white MacBook is a nice computer and serves its purpose well. I do have to say that I prefer the aluminum to the polycarbonate though, it just has a nicer feel to it. But my favorite design is the non-unibody MacBook Pro :)
And if you save up your allowance for a year without spending any then you could get a second hand MacBook. If you have other money saved up, then you might even get a refurbished MacBook for $750.

Usually I don't get the whole unboxing thing and why on earth people post videos of it I will never understand but opening up my uni MBP was awesome. It's something I will always do. As for the aluminum or not, I'll be interested to see if any netbook that may come out might replace the whitebook.

yes. yes. yes.
The white one is much more... well... amazing in my opinion... its just that polycarbonate seems like apples.... signature touch to products, even if the whitebook is the last one.
I had wanted the white book for well quite literally since the day it came out. It was i think just about four years when i got my whitebook last month. and let me tell you, you will be so much happier when you actually get it! I was really freaking out when I heard about the UB because I thought for sure they would get rid or the whitebook... but they didnt...
Dont worry. your time will come :D

I also prefer the polycarbonate cases. I'm gonna keep my BlackBook until Apple stops supporting it, and it can't keep up with my needs(which by the looks of it might be a bit). While I love the unibody design, the black keyboard and the screen bother me. If Apple uses matte LCDs like the 17", and makes the keys silver as opposed to black, then I'd go and upgrade. Now if they make one like ColorWares Stealth MBP in 13" I'll be first in line.
Now that I think about it, I really wish Apple made silver keys for their aluminum models, even if they had the black bezel.

I love my last-of-the-BlackBooks plastic MacBook. She is one heck of a machine and if she doesn't outlive my degree I'll be surprised.
I didn't buy her because she was black, I bought her because I wasn't prepared to buy a MacBook Pro but I still needed a high performance laptop for all my messing around in GarageBand for my radio degree (they use ********** Adobe Audition in the studios on 5 year old Dell machines. NONE of them work. AT ALL. 10GB hard disk my arse). But in my opinion I do prefer the black finish to the white, because I know if I had the white one it'd be constantly filthy!
The BlackBook does not have a matte screen, it is the same glossy panel as the WhiteBook.
As for polycarbonate vs aluminium, Well I guess I'm just a traditionalist. Since the eMac and iMac G4, everything at Apple has been white polycarbonate. The computer, the keyboard, the mouse, the power supply, the ethernet base station, the iPod, yada yada. I don't think we're ready to move on. Man I miss the iMac G4. They were the best designed computer ever.
Good luck on saving for your MacBook. Remember there are always college and university discounts available. If you're in America there could also be a tax holiday approaching. If you're in Britain, then yeah the 16% "you're in Britain you must pay more than everyone in the world except Switzerland and Norway" random Apple tax on top of VAT is a pain in the arse.

It's funny you mention the filthiness of the Whitebooks. Cause I've just realized something odd. See, I HATE smudges. So much so that I wish I could declare a holocaust on them! Yet isn't it funny how I'm attracted to all the things that are pretty much bound to get smudges such as the Whitebook and iPod Touch? xD.

I agree with all the above comments about the white being signature and more Apple-ish in design.
However,
I will be trading in my brand new whitebook for a pro because the screen is driving me nuts. Others may not have a problem, but every time I open the lid I have to adjust the screen for about 30 seconds because the viewing angle range is non-existent.
Trading in, that is, as long as I don't get docked with a restocking fee.

That's not finger oil buildup, but the plastic of the keys wearing down from friction.

I was remarking on the mysterious European/Australasian Apple Tax which is, in Britain, roughly on average 16% per product. I say on average because some things like the Mighty Mouse only have an 8% Random Apple Tax and the old 23" ACD had a 27% RAT.

I took my WhiteBook to mymacdealer a few months ago to have the cracked topcase fixed, and they replaced my trackpad and keyboard along with it! Really great service. I hope they start expanding since there's only a few in Alberta (a province in Canada where I live), but their service really is great.
I now have an unibody MacBook (not Pro, I got the 13" before that change was made), and there is one huge reason why I prefer it so much.
Stainless palmrests.
Seriously, even if you are a minor sweater, the WhiteBook stains so badly. I'm a major sweater, so it often happened that after one day of writing I'd have to scrub it off with a Magic Eraser. Just awful. =/
Plus the Multitouch trackpad really agrees with me more... but I do think the WhiteBook is just as much an eye-pleaser as the unibody. :)

I like the plastic ones, due mostly to Wi-Fi range, it seems to be that the plastic Macbooks have much better Wifi Range than the Macbook Pros, so I am guessing that it's the material that is causing this, so I would like to see a macbook pro that is plastic.

i've heard so many "not so great' things about the aluminum macbook. though few good things too.
The aluminum compared to the white macbook poly-car-bonate-plactic stuff sucks. & though this shouldn't be an issue for most, its a huge deal for me. My late 2006 white Macbook has travelled with me everywhere. On a daily basis i'll place it in my Incase backpack and literally chuck it into my car every morning all over Los Angeles. This Incase backpack (great backpack btw) and macbook has been with me to San Francisco, San Diego, Chicago, New York, Shanghai, Beijing, Tokyo, you name it. Admittedly, when I 1st got my macbook in late 06 I was very careful with it, making sure to always be clean and rest on my desk unless it was gently put into my backpack. But as time went on I began to see how durable this white macbook was.
The first time I dropped it was about 3 feet and fell right on the screen. My b*lls tightened and i feared the worst, but it worked fine. Then another time, then once more. But all worked well. Since early 2007 up to now it's been rare for me to drop my macbook until about a month ago when i took it to the kitchen and it fell a good 3 ft, in fast spinning motion right into the metal trash can. The trash can was dented (still is) but the macbook was completely fine. No exaggeration. Even in China when my buddies and I went to the great wall, it was raining and i slipped, instinctively i purposely fell on my back so my incase backpack would cushion my fall, macbook in there and all. Everything worked completely fine. The real damage i've ever gotten out of the macbook was when a small liquid spill messed up part of the logic board and they even replaced that and the screen.
Today, i'm getting a new macbook, but i'm getting the 2009 White Macbook model instead of the Aluminum one. I simply know the aluminum one would be able to live up to my daily life and truth be told, after comparing the specifications of both the white and aluminum macbooks, there isn't too much of a difference unless you really want a multi-touch trackpad and 7hr. battery life instead of the 2009 white macbook's 5hr. Which to me 5hr's is amazing considering this 2006 white macbook is on its 900+ charge, running for only 1:30 on just battery.
Get the white macbook, or wait till september for apple's new macbook tablet or w/e its gonna be to see if it's worth it. Hell, who knows, if it is i'll be selling the 2009 model macbook for the new i=tablet or w/e.
EDIT: With an interesting turn of events it seems I'm now on track with getting the Aluminum Macbook Pro. I was on the phone with an Apple Corporate Rep. and she got me a deal to pay only $100 more for the basic 13in. MAcbook Pro, which it seems i've gone and taken the offer. Knowing me, I won't be happy until I actually receive the new Macbook and even then not until i've played with it for after a week. Obviously getting this Macbook Pro, i'm not a hypocrite regarding all the stuff i've just written up there. But in my defense feel I got the new Macbook Pro a few hours ago for 3 things: 1. (mainly) 7 hour battery life 2. Multi-Touch feature isn't bad 3. The "New Apple Product" factor. Hey, why not?

WONDERFUL NEWS, EVERYONE! I may be getting my Macbook!!
So I was talking with my parents last night, and we made a deal. I get a 4.0 on my semester report card, I get the Macbook. Not only that, but I have $400 to add to that!
So I have a question for you: The Macbook Air is kinda growin' on me, and I would have enough to get it....BUT, if I put the $400 to the regular Macbook, (with about $100 extra from chores) I could get a 500GB Hard Drive AND 4 GB of RAM along with iWork and MAYBE (if I scrounge some more money) Final Cut Express!!!!!!!!!
So, which would you choose? I'm leaning to the regular Macbook as I am a huge data packrat. Also, how long would a computer like this last? I want to use what I get for college, so I need to know if it will last 6+ years.......

As it turns out, when I mentioned I bought the new White Macbook for $999, I was on the phone with an Apple Rep and she told me I could upgrade for the new 13 inch Macbook Pro for the very same price! The only thing is the new Macbook Pro is refurbished. To me however is not a big deal at all and went for it.
I suggest you take a look at the Refurbished section in the Apple online Store. They even have the Macbook Air for $999.
As for the hard drive upgrade (& i'm assuming you'll want better RAM) I highly suggest you buy it other than with Apple. I purchased a Western Digital 5400RPM 500GB HD for $75 last year on eBay, and works amazing. I also bought 4GB of RAM for my macbook at $25 at Fry's electronics.

So, which would you choose? I'm leaning to the regular Macbook as I am a huge data packrat. Also, how long would a computer like this last? I want to use what I get for college, so I need to know if it will last 6+ years.......
okay i'm guessing your total money should be around $1400? am i correct?
If i were you I don't want to turn against the Plastic WhiteBook, which is currently what i'm using...
If you want something that could last for about 6 more years. I'd get the PRO!
If you can't get a hold of around $1,600 - $1,800 You can get a refurb MacBook Pro 15, 2.53 GHZ 4GB RAM (up to 8GB), SD card SLOT, 250gb and backlight keyboard, only for $1,450.
But if you want the plastic go with the whitebook, and upgrade it BY YOURSELF! you'll save some money trust me! 500gb is like 90 USD and 4gb of ram is like 50-70 USD
so you'll pay around 999.99 + 90 +70 = roughly around $1200 USD.
EDIT!!!:
I went to apple online and put final cut express and iwork... everything that you mentioned is roughly aroun $1,600 USD
I'd definitely just go with what i suggested.
New 500GB Scorpion Blue or black i believe is around 80-90 NEW
and 4gb crucial is around $45-70
so shop smart brother

I'll actually be getting the government discount, as my grandmother works for the government. I already asked her, I'll just give her the money.
But I don't like the design of the Pros......They just don't do anything for me, and I'm care a great deal about design........The only thing I really like and envy on the new Macbook Pros is their illuminated keyboard......Man, if only they brought that to the Whitebook!

Can't stop watching unboxing videos and longing!
I was doing this yesterday morning, while I was waiting for the Fed-Ex guy to show up with my new computer!

The trackpad is amazing! I still have the whitebook right now, next to the new mbp and I can feel a huge difference with the trackpads. The mbp one feels smoother, feels better on the finger when using it.
Also, last night i was excited and at like 3am when i came home i decided to switch the hard drive and i really noticed how beautiful the design on the inside is. The aluminum bottom cover that comes off is so thin, all in one piece. I was impressed.
For the longest time I ranted mentally to myself about how the whitebook is sufficient to get the job done, and though it is, this past day of playing around with the new mbp i'm now sold on it!
Oh! & the backlit keyboard. Oh man. This makes me want to use it in the dark even more now. it's like a movie theater experience. lol. okay...

I definitely prefer the sexiness of my new MBP 13" compared to my two previous whitebooks. They look more professional, and the screen is leagues ahead.
I am 17 years old, and I'm a junior in high school. I worked this summer and last summer (never before that. Started my bank account then too.) I pay my car insurance, gas, pretty much any expenses. I make $8.25 an hour, you just have a good work ethic. My parents give me no money at all, and in the last year I've had:
All three iPhones, two whitebooks, and now my MacBook pro, apple in ear headphones, wireless mighty mouse and keyboard, iPod video, and about 10 iPhone cases (~$250). Not to mention me paying for my car (2002 Civic. Not great but it drives), and my $6,000+ in my personal debit card account.

I own the last rev. of the whitebook, nice machine I can see why you like it.
But I agree you should seriously consider the 13" MBP. From the software you described you might buy seems you wish to do video or photo editing?
While the screen on mine is passable it could be alot better. Comparing to my dad's MBP there is a huge notice in quality different. His angles are more "acceptable" for watching videos. Also his colors are, I don't know the word so i'll say "richer".
Backlit keyboard would be nice but to me not really on my list of things I care awhole lot about.
I am just like you, my dad was going through mac lappies to find one he liked. He bought this one but the screen size and quality just didn't work for him. It was 2 weeks from my birthday and I casually mentioned "well don't suppose I could have it for my birthday since your selling".
Surprised he said "sure, you pay it off over the course of the year, I cover all charges and interest".
Must say it is good to be a mac user again. I was on a "dry" spell with just pc laptop and desktop (thought i built one and bought the other on my own).
Anyways, as others have said upgrade ram and hd yourself. If you don't feel comfortable doing it I guess you could buy the ram and hd seperate then hit the apple store and give them fifteen or so bucks for them to install.
Anyways just giving you "the other side of the story." Whatever you decide, hope you love your mac!
