Way to go Apple! itd be funny if VA Tech switched to an Apple rival.

Come on Apple. You have to hook up VT with the dual G5 xserves so the could go back on the list. Hopefully, when VT is back up and running "Big Mac", it will be faster, and then it will move up in rankings.

I'm sure when VaTech's Big Mac is back online, it will be faster than before. I'm just wondering by how much? Hopefully it will still be in the Top 5. :) For anyone who is familiar with the Super Computer rankings, is this jockeying and turnover in the Top 10 a common thing? Or are all of these other new systems coming out of the woodwork after all of the publicity that Big Mac got?

Soon there will be another G5 cluster in the top 10:

VT's Big Mac with its old specs would be ranked 5th (down from 3rd). I don't think the XServe is at 2.5 GHz yet so the machines VT will be getting will only be 2.0 GHz (same as before) with some better memory error correction. I don't think there will be any GREAT improvement with the new machine other than 1) way less power consumption 2) a fraction of the space. Oh, yeah, I forgot that they were buying a few more machines, but I think it is only a few 100 - so performace will go up a little.

Hopefully the new army machine and the few others yet to be built don't push VT off the top 10. (IBM is planning at least two - one of which will put the Japanese Earth simulator to shame by a factor of 9 or 10.)
