iPod Recovery Tactics

I know that this has been brought up before, but I can't find the threads where folks recommended different things. I have a friend who was using a PC to sync with his iPod. The PC (surprisingly) was filled with viruses and another friend helped him clean his hard drive and one tactic he employed was to erase all the mp3s on the harddrive including iTMS purchases. My smart friend has finally acquired a 1.25 GHz powerbook G4 (simply awesome) and would like to start syncing the iPod with the powerbook instead of the PC. Is there any software to recover the files on the iPod (which has not been synced to any computer since the deletion of the files on the desktop PC)??
