how much faster are the new iBooks?

i was thinking about replacing my 12" 800mhz G4 iBook with either the 12" 1ghz iBook or if i do have enough money the 12" 1.33ghz powerbook which is a long shot. will the speed be noticeable between the 800mhz and 1ghz iBooks?

If you go with the PB, you'd see a difference. As for the iBook, a 200 Mhz increase won't feel that significant. I suggest that you max out your RAM in your current iBook.

I agree. I have a new ibook 1ghz 12" and its fast enough but doesn't impress me that much. my wife has the 800mhz 12" and it only seems a tad slower. same bus, same drive, same everything but the cpu pretty much.

Not too much in this case. RAM is the best way to go :).

just for a better idea.. my wifes 800mhz with 640 ram gets bout 79-82 on xbench. my 1ghz with 768 gets around 95-98.

ok i have another question now. would you rather buy a new 12" iBook 1ghz or a refurbished 12" powerbook 1ghz? and your reason please.

Incremental upgrades such as this are pointless - you lose a lot of money for not much of an upgrade.

The new iBooks appear to clock in at 1.067 GHz, whilst the rev B PowerBook 12" (my model) has a 1.0 GHz CPU - both have 512k L2 cache and 133MHz FSB.

If you upgrade to the PowerBook, you'll see a difference, not to mention all the other perks: optional Superdrive, audio in, mini-DVI out and native monitor spanning, better keyboard, AirPort Extreme card built-in, built-in Bluetooth, 64MB graphics, optional 5200 80GB HD, etc. But it's a lot of money when your current computer still does things really well.

You may as well stick it out with the 800MHz iBook for a few years, then get a new G5 12" PowerBook when it eventually arrives. There's absolutely no point whatsoever in getting the new 1GHz iBook.

ps I don't trust xBench. My PB gets 95-100 score but it is widely variable even when doing the same stuff.

actually i was refering to the 12" model with the 40gb harddrive 32mb gforce graphics and 256mb ddr2100 RAM. but the only real reason i want to upgrade is because i really like how it looks. its not really from a performance standpoint, i was just curious about that.

You mean you wished you'd gone with the PowerBook in the first place? There's no denying that the 12" PowerBook is the sexiest notebook computer ever. Note that the newer iBook G4 will look exactly the same as yours though.

Rev A and B 12" PowerBooks had a 133MHz bus with PCI DDR 266 RAM. Meanwhile the rev B 17" and the first 15" AlBooks had a 167MHz bus.

The rev C 1.33GHz 12" PowerBook now has been upgraded to a 167MHz bus with the new PCI DDR 333 RAM to match the same architecture of the 15/17" PowerBooks.

Meanwhile the current iBook has a 133MHz bus like the previous generation 12" PB (I expect the next iBook G4 to be 1.33GHz G4 with 167MHz FSB).

The 12" PB tends to be one generation behind the 15/17" PBs and then the iBooks are a generation behind the 12" PB.

(He was comparing rev B 1GHz PB with new iBook 1.07GHz - they both have 133MHz FSB hence my statement was correct ;) )
