I got a iMac on wednesday, everything's been great.

Until now.

It's been on all day (the problem maybe?) and it now sounds like a fan is catching? I put the fan speeds up to 2000 with smcFancontrol but after 20 secs it goes back down to 1500? HELP

Reinstall SmcFanControl. Sorry I'm not native but what does "catching" mean?

It just sounds like something around the Apple logo on the front is catching, like hitting against somethig? It's just a dull repetative sound. It was on all day so that could be the problem. I'll see if it persists tomorrow.

My iMac has been on for 4 days now (I always put it to sleep) without problems. I would call to Apple and ask for replacement.

Fan could be defective or just warped. Don't think about it, it's Apple's headache not yours :cool:

Will that cause problems? An as I bought it in an aapple store do I have to go there to exchange it? And all my iPods and iPhone is registered and software have all beeninstslled, and u dint want to do that AGAIN. thanks for your help aswell

You can ask for Apple to repair it instead of replacement, so you don't have to do everything again. And if they can't repair it in store (or it takes weeks to get fixed) ask if they can replace the whole Mac and put everything from your HD in replacement. Just take it to store and let them have a look.

Well, I turned it on this morning and it only did it when it very first powered up. It's fine now, but I may give apple a ring tonight. Thanks for your help!

Good that it's working now. Components can make noises when they are taking their places. If it starts again, give Apple a call

Yeh, and if I tilted the screen to a different position it would stop. Also, is the hard-drive at 48 degrees when using Photoshop, iTunes and Safari an average temperature?

Yea, 48 Celsius is great temperature, just keep it below 55c and you'll be fine.

My new iMac is making noise as well. Had this machine less than one month. I posted about it a couple days ago - thinking it was the HD making the noise.

What is "smcFancontrol"? Is it a third party add on I should install? And how do I find the existing operating temps for the system?

The little flip book that came with this machine is all the pitiful documentation I have on both the machine and the OS, and I'm coming from 11 years of continuous Windows use...the last Mac I had was a Powerbook running OS 7.5.

Any advice is appreciated.

SmcFanControl (http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/23049)is an app that allows you to manually set fan speeds. To see your temperatures and current fan speeds, you need iStat Pro (http://www.islayer.com/apps/istatpro/)
