Just bought and installed it - 241Mb download, looks ok so far - just have to work out how to get my favourites in from the Windows Mobile versions I've been forced to use while waiting.

although u have a solid point, i think they should've introduced it at a sale price, especially since they have an optional external piece we can buy to make it "better"

I never said i can't afford it... I'm going to get it right after it's released in the US and test it. We still don't know the price yet but i assume is going to cost $89.99 US if it's 59.99 Euros.

I can't wait to test it and make a thread about Navigon VS TomTom.

I have been in a few threads regarding TT as well. Yes I can afford it, however on this occasion I will pass. Bought CoPilot and am more than pleased with it. If I need TT I will use my stand alone. £59.99 seems to much considering we waited so long. :):)

I'll pay the $90 for a quality GPS Navigation app. Navigon was to me, pretty eye candy, but about as useful as Sygic. They're both fine apps and I've never had a proble navigating with them, but they're missing polish, but if TomTom is as good as their dedicated units, I can't wait to use it. Also TTS is a big seller for me.

What makes you think that TomTom is a quality GPS Navigation app compared to the others?

According to the screenshots posted at iphoneclub.nl ...The UI looks like a it's been drawn with Microsoft Paint on Windows XP. With Navigon, it feels like Windows Vista on steroids.

With Co-Pilot I've found the GPS is not accurate enough, it tells you way too late to make a turn if you need to turn left then suddenly turn right etc....

I'm interested to know if this is a limitation of the iPhone GPS accuracy or a problem with the Co-Pilot software itself - I'd love to know of anyone that has had similar Co-Pilot inaccuracy and found the TomTom to be working much better and much more accurate with road position.

my standalone Tomtom is more accurate with journey times and more info is displayed at one time (time to arrival, speed etc etc)

I guess there wont be a complete solution that will answer my every need but at the moment the time to arrival part of Navigon is annoying me (its always tooooo ambitious)

You can adjust the voice instruction lead time in CoPilot live. Default is 5 seconds before the turn. I've found that 6 to 7 seconds works well.

As well as being able to adjust time before turns for announcements, CoPilot also gives you the option to adjust your avg speeds on different types of roads (ie create a different profile). This means you can pick profiles for different times of the day and thus create more accurate journey times. AFAIK TomTom has no such ability (a factor that has annoyed me in the past with their hardware)

Have you updated Navigon to 1.1? That added the option to show additional info on the map screen.

I found that the navigon just thinks your going to be sightly speeding to make up for any red lights. Also you can have ETA and distance to arrival on the navigon in a small box on the bottom left and the speed remains at the top. I think its in the options somewhere.

At the moment, I am leaning towards the Navigon, with its promised features of TMC and full TTS. The lane guidance wins it for me.

And this is the bottom line for the turn-by-turn nav apps in the App Store. Everyone wants to think there's one 'right' answer, or one application that will do everything they want. The fact is that it doesn't exist currently, and none of the apps including Tom Tom do everything. Each have their strengths and weaknesses. Over time these will surely be refined and features added to bring them up to a more even standard.

So the thing to do is evaluate all of the packages and pick the one that's right for you in terms of features. many people have bought Navigon and are completely happy with it. Same goes for iGo and Co-Pilot. Many will also be happy with Tom Tom.

People are paying a lot for these apps, thus they feel the need to 'defend' their purchases. What's right for one person may not be for another. Relax and enjoy the fact that there are several good alternatives on the iPhone for Navigation right now.

Another thing people overlook when ranking the "best" GPS is fact that maps differ from country to country.

Navigon in Australia uses map that is probably at least two years out-dated, and has no speed information. POI is really the most horrid I've come across.

Tom Tom Australia is probably the best choice in this country, just surpassing Sygic, but using it in Asia is not possible since there is no map for it. Sygic is the only candidate in South East Asia ATM.

Tele Atlas is not always the best map in every country. Similarly Navteq is not the best map in every country. In some countries, they partner with other smaller map providers, and the quality differ from country to country.

Thanks - tried on 7 seconds on way home tonight, turned left at a roundabout and my street is then 200 yards on the left, it started telling me just as I was almost on the turn so I've increased it to 8 seconds and see what it is like next time I take that same route home now I've found a spot where I know it needs to tell me quicker :)
