I will soon be the proud owner of a Powerbook and I was wondering what FTP/IRC clients you guys recommend for downloads...

I don't use IRC... but for FTP, Transmit is great. http://www.panic.com/transmit

transmit is great, worth paying for.
as for irc, well, that's best experienced in command line, and by the way, a finnish invention ;) with any skills, one could get SCROLLZ source code and compile it with developer tools; the final product is a single file that can be executed from terminal, and in my opinion, is the best irc client ever seen the daylight. but it's a cli app, so not everyone likes it.
edit: the source code can be downloaded from www.scrollz.com

IRC - X-Chat Aqua 0.12.something
FTP - RBrowserLite, which is free and looks a bit like the Finder GUI.

Fetch. Just 'cause it's free. Hmmm... site license. Can't beat WS_FTP on windows though. Wish they made a Mac version.
